How did Jesus rebuke Nicodemus?

He rebuked Nicodemus by saying, "Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things?" He also rebukes Nicodemus by saying, "If I told you people about earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?" [3:10; 3:12]
