## For if God did not spare the angels who sinned… ##

This begins a series of "if" statements that conclude in verse [2 Peter 2:7](./07.md).

## down to Tartarus ##
|
|
|
|
"Tartarus" is the Greek word for hell taken from greek and roman religion. (See: [[rc://en/ta/man/translate/translate-names]])

|
|
## to be kept in chains in darkness until the judgment ##
|
|
|
|
To be held in a secure prison waiting God's final judgment.
|
|
|
|
## and if he did not spare the ancient world…but brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly ##
|
|
|
|
God destroyed the ancient world and the ungodly people with a flood.
|
|
|
|
## but did preserve Noah ##
|
|
|
|
God saved righteous Noah from the flood.
|
|
|
|
## reduced the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes ##
|
|
|
|
God used fire to destroy the ungodly in the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.
|
|
|
|
## as an example of what is to come ##
|
|
|
|
Just as Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed by fire, at the end of the age God will destroy all the ungodly people by the lake of fire. |
