# He said to him, “If you are the Son of God ... so your foot does not hit a stone.’”
This is a direct quotation. It can be stated as an indirect quotation: “He told him that if he was the Son of God, he should jump off to the ground, because it is written, God will command his angels to carry you so your foot does not hit a stone.’” (See: [[rc://en/ta/man/translate/figs-quotations]])
# If you are the Son of God
Satan knew that Jesus was indeed the Son of God. (See: [[rc://en/ta/man/translate/figs-explicit]])
# the Son of God
This is an important title for Jesus. (See: [[rc://en/ta/man/translate/guidelines-sonofgodprinciples]])
# jump off to the ground
That is, “jump off this building to the ground.”
# it is written
This can be stated in active form: “a prophet of God wrote long ago” (See: [[rc://en/ta/man/translate/figs-activepassive]])
# God will command his angels to carry you so your foot does not hit a stone.
This is a quotation within a quotation. The entire quotation can be restated so that this portion is an indirect quotation: “ ... because it is written that God will command his angels to carry you so your foot does not hit a stone!” (See: [[rc://en/ta/man/translate/figs-quotesinquotes]])
# so your foot does not hit a stone
This means, “so that you will not be hurt at all; not even your foot will be injured on a stone.” It could also be translated as, “so that even your foot will not strike against a stone; you will not be injured at all.”
