he could see the Promised Land

The mountain was just across the Jordan River from Canaan. Moses was able to see the land from that high place.

Joshua became their new leader

This was the same Joshua who was one of the 12 who spied on the land when Israel first arrived at Canaan (See: 14:06). Joshua and Caleb wanted the people to go into the land at that time. Because they trusted God, he said they would enter the land after the other people died (See: 14:08).
