\mt2 The Apostle John wrote a letter to his fellow believers. We call this letter
\mt1 1 John
\c 1
\s1 1 John 1:1-4
\s1 We apostles proclaim to you the message about the One who has lived eternally, so that you may be joined together with us and we may be completely happy.
\p
\v 1 \add I, John, am writing to you about\add* the one who existed before \add there was anything else!\add* He is the one whom we \add apostles\add* listened to \add as he taught us!\add* We saw him! We ourselves looked at him and touched him! \add He is the one who taught us\add* the message that \add enables people to have eternal\add* life (OR, live \add spiritually\add*).
\v 2 Because he came here \add to the earth\add* and we have seen him, we proclaim to you clearly that the one whom we have seen is the \add one who\add* has always lived. He was \add previously\add* with his Father in heaven, but he came to live among us.
\v 3 We proclaim to you the \add message about Jesus\add*, the one whom we saw and heard, in order that you may have a close relationship with us. The ones whom we have a close relationship with are God our Father and his Son Jesus Christ.
\v 4 I am writing to you about these things so that \add you ◄will be convinced/believe\add*► \add that they are true, and as a\add* result we may be completely joyful.
\s1 We should continue to be morally pure, because God is morally pure and he is able to forgive our sins on the basis that Jesus died to acquit us of the guilt of all our sins.
\sr 1 John 1:5—2:2
\p
\v 5 The message that we heard from Christ and proclaim to you is this: God is \add pure in every way. He never sins. He is like\add* [MET] a \add brilliant\add* light that has no darkness at all.
\v 6 If we claim to have a close relationship with \add God\add*, but \add we conduct our lives in an impure manner, that is like\add* living [MET] in \add evil\add* darkness. We are lying. We are not conducting our lives according to \add God's\add* true message.
\v 7 But living \add in a pure manner\add*, as God is \add living in a pure manner\add* [MET] \add in every way, is like living\add* in God's light. If we do that, we have a close relationship with each other. Not only that, but \add God\add* ◄acquits us/removes \add the guilt\add*► \add of\add* all our sins because \add he accepts\add* what his Son Jesus did for us \add when his\add* blood \add flowed from his body when he died. So we should conduct our lives\add* ◄\add in a manner according to what God says is pure\add*►.
\v 8 Those who say they never behave sinfully are deceiving themselves, and refusing \add to accept as\add* true \add what God says about them\add*.
\v 9 But God will do what he says that he will do, and what he does is \add always\add* right. So, if we confess to him that we \add have behaved\add* sinfully, he will forgive \add us for\add* our sins and ◄will free us from/remove► \add the guilt of\add* all our sins. \add Because of that\add*, \add we should confess to him that we have behaved sinfully\add*.
\v 10 \add Because God says that everyone has sinned\add*, those who say/claim that they have never behaved sinfully talk \add as though\add* God lies! They reject what God says \add about us!\add*
\c 2
\p
\v 1 You who are very dear to me, I am writing this to you \add to say\add*, “Do not sin!” But if any of you \add believers\add* sins, \add God can forgive you because\add* we have Jesus Christ, who is the righteous one, who speaks to the Father on our behalf \add and asks him to forgive us\add*.
\v 2 \add Remember that Jesus Christ\add* voluntarily sacrificed \add his own life for us, so that as a result God forgives\add* our sins. \add Yes, God is able to forgive\add* our sins, but not only ours! \add He is\add* also \add able to forgive\add* the sins of people everywhere!
\s1 We should conduct our lives as Christ did, obeying what God commands us to do. We will then be loving God in the manner in which he wants us to.
\sr 1 John 2:3-6
\p
\v 3 \add I will tell you\add* how we can be sure that we ◄know/have a close relationship with► \add God\add*. \add If we\add* obey what he commands \add us to do, that shows us that we have a close relationship with him. So we must always obey what he commands us to do\add*.
\v 4 Those who say, “We ◄know/I have a close relationship with► God,” and do not obey what \add God\add* commands \add us to do\add*, are liars. They are not conducting their lives according to \add God's\add* true message.
\v 5 But those who obey what \add God\add* commands them to do are the people who love God in the manner in which he wants us to. \add I will tell you\add* how we can be sure that we have a close relationship with God:
\v 6 If we say that we are living as God wants us to, we should \add conduct our lives\add* as Christ \add did\add*.
\s1 We ought to love our fellow believers in order to continue behaving like people living in the light.
\sr 1 John 2:7-11
\p
\v 7 Dear friends, I am not writing a new \add additional\add* command to you. Instead, I am writing to you a command which was given to you when you first [MTY] \add believed in Christ\add*. That command is \add part of\add* the message that you have \add always\add* heard.
\v 8 Nevertheless, \add I can say that\add* the command I am writing to you is a new command. \add It is new because\add* what Christ \add did\add* was new, and what you \add are doing\add* is new, because \add you have been ceasing to conduct your lives in a morally impure manner\add* and \add are now truly conducting your lives in a pure manner. That is like\add* [MET] no longer \add living in\add* darkness. Instead, \add it is like\add* living where a brilliant light is already shining.
\v 9 Those who claim that they are \add pure in every way, like people\add* [MET] living in the light, but hate any of their fellow believers, are still \add behaving in an impure manner, like\add* [MET] \add people who are continually living\add* in darkness.
\v 10 But those who love their fellow believers \add are continuing to conduct their lives like people\add* who are living in the light. They are people who please \add God\add* [LIT]. \add So you should love your fellow believers\add*.
\v 11 But those who hate any of their fellow believers are still \add conducting their lives in an impure way, like\add* [MET] \add people who are living\add* in darkness. They do not know that they will eventually destroy themselves \add eternally\add*. They have become \add spiritually\add* blind [PRS, MET], \add unaware of spiritual truth\add*.
\s1 I am writing all these matters to you because I know that God has forgiven your sins and also because you have come to know the Father and Christ, who has always existed, and because you have overcome the evil one.
\sr 1 John 2:12-14
\p
\v 12-13 I am writing \add this\add* to you \add whom I love as though\add* [MET] \add you were my\add* little children, to you who are \add spiritually mature people who are like\add* [MET] fathers, and to you \add spiritually vigorous/strong people who are like\add* [MET] young men. Remember that your sins have been forgiven {\add God\add* has forgiven your sins} on account of what Christ [MTY] \add has done\add*. You now know \add Christ, the one\add* who always existed. You have defeated the evil one, \add Satan\add*.
\v 14 \add I will say it again\add*: I have written \add this\add* to you because you have come to know the Father, because you now know \add Christ, the one\add* who always existed, because you are \add spiritually\add* strong, because you continue to \add obey\add* God's word, and because you have defeated the evil one, \add Satan\add*.
\s1 Do not esteem the evil manner in which other people in the world live, since you want to live forever.
\sr 1 John 2:15-17
\p
\v 15 Do not desire \add to conduct you lives in the evil manner in which\add* godless \add people in\add* the world [MTY] conduct their \add lives\add*, and do not love anything that \add the evil people\add* in the world [MTY] \add consider to be good\add*. Those who desire \add to conduct their lives in the evil manner in which other people of\add* the world [MTY] conduct their \add lives\add* do not \add really\add* love \add God\add*, their Father, \add at all\add*.
\v 16 Keep in mind that all \add the evil human desires\add* in the world \add are actions/things such as these\add*: \add People\add* desire to do \add what\add* their self-directed nature \add strongly desires\add*. \add People\add* desire \add to possess\add* whatever ◄appeals to their senses/they see or hear about►. \add People\add* boast about the material things that they possess. \add Such evil ways of living\add* do not originate/come from the Father! Instead they originate/come from \add the ◄godless people in\add* the world/people in the world who conduct their lives in a manner that displeases God► [MTY]!
\v 17 The \add godless people in\add* the world [MTY], along with what they desire, will disappear, but those who do what God wants \add them to do\add* will live forever! You know that it is now the final period of this age when there are liars who deny that Jesus is God's Chosen One. But you have the power of God's Spirit and you know what is true and what is false. So continue to live according to the true message that you heard when you began to believe in Christ, in order that you may continue to live united both to God's Son and to the Father.
\s 1 John 2:18-25
\p
\v 18 \add You who are very dear to me\add*, it is \add now\add* the final part [MTY] \add of this age/\add*the final \add period of time before Jesus returns\add*. Just like you heard \add from us apostles\add* that a person who opposes Christ will come/appear, even now there are many people who oppose Christ. That is why we know that it is the final part \add of this age\add* (OR, \add before Jesus returns\add*) [MTY].
\v 19 The \add people who oppose Christ\add* refused to remain in our congregations, but they never \add really\add* ◄belonged with us/were fellow believers►. If they had ◄belonged with us/been fellow believers►, they would have remained with us. But because \add they left, everyone\add* can clearly know that none of them ◄belongs with us/is a fellow believer►.
\v 20 But as for you, you have been given the power of \add God's Spirit, which comes from Christ\add* (OR, \add God\add*), the Holy One. \add As a result\add*, you all know \add how to\add* ◄\add distinguish false teaching from/recognize what is false teaching and what is\add*► \add the true message\add*.
\v 21 I am writing \add this letter\add* to you, not because you do not know \add what is God's\add* true message, but because you do know \add what it is\add*. You also know that no false message originates/comes from \add God, who is the source of all\add* truth.
\v 22 The \add worst\add* liars are the ones who deny that Jesus is ◄the Messiah/the one whom God chose to rescue us►. They are \add the ones that we told you about\add*, the ones who oppose Christ. They refuse to acknowledge/admit that \add God is\add* the Father and that \add Jesus is his\add* Son (OR, the one who is also God).
\v 23 Those who refuse to acknowledge/admit that \add Jesus is God's\add* Son do not have a relationship with the Father. But those who acknowledge/admit that \add Jesus is God's\add* Son \add not only have a relationship with God's Son, but they\add* have a relationship with the Father also.
\v 24 \add So\add*, as for you, you must continue to conduct your lives according to \add the true message\add* that you heard when you began [MTY] \add to believe in Christ\add*. If you continue to \add do that\add*, you will continue to have a close relationship with both \add God's\add* Son and the Father.
\v 25 And what God told us is that \add he will cause us\add* to live forever!
\s1 Continue to conduct your lives according to what you were originally taught by God's Spirit.
\sr 1 John 2:26-27
\p
\v 26 I have written this to you \add to\add* ◄\add warn you\add* about/tell you to beware of► those \add who want to\add* deceive you \add concerning the truth about Christ\add*.
\v 27 As for you, God's Spirit, whom you received from Christ, remains in you. So you do not need anyone to teach you \add anything else that they claim/say is the truth\add*. God's Spirit is teaching you all \add of God's truth that you need to know\add*. God's Spirit is truthful and never says anything that is false. So continue to conduct your lives in the way that \add he has\add* taught you.
\s1 Continue to live united to Christ, so that you will be confident that he will accept you when he returns.
\sr 1 John 2:28-29
\p
\v 28 Now, \add while some people are trying to persuade you to accept their false teaching, I urge\add* you, who are all very dear to me, to continue to \add have a close relationship with\add* Christ. \add We need to do that\add* in order that we may be confident \add that he will accept us\add* when he comes back again. If we do that, we will not be ashamed \add when we stand\add* before \add him\add* when he comes. \v 29 Since you know that \add Christ\add* always does what is right, you know that all those who continue doing what is right are the ones who have become children of God.
\c 3
\s1 Do not allow anyone to seduce you to sin, because you are God's children, and his children maintain themselves free from evil behavior by not continuing to sin as the devil's children do.
\sr 1 John 3:1-10
\p
\v 1 \add Think about\add* how much our \add heavenly\add* Father loves us! He allows us to ◄say that we are/be called► his children! \add And it is indeed true that\add* we are \add his children. But people in\add* the world [MTY] \add who are unbelievers\add* have not understood \add who\add* God \add is\add*. So they do not understand \add who we are\add*, that we \add are God's children\add*.
\v 2 Dear friends, even though ◄at present/now► we are God's children, \add he\add* has not yet ◄made clear/revealed► \add to us\add* what we will be like \add in the future\add*. However, we know that when \add Christ\add* comes back again, we will be like him, because we will see what he is \add really\add* like.
\v 3 \add So\add*, all those who confidently expect \add to see Christ as he actually is/what Christ is like when he returns\add* must keep themselves pure in every way, just like Christ, who is pure in every way.
\v 4 But everyone who continues sinning is refusing to obey \add God's\add* laws, because that is what sin is, refusing to obey \add God's\add* laws.
\v 5 You know that Christ came in order to completely remove \add the guilt of\add* our sins. You know also that he never sinned.
\v 6 Those who continue \add doing what\add* Christ wants them to, do not continue sinning repeatedly. But those who repeatedly sin have not understood \add who Christ is\add*, nor have they had a close relationship with him.
\v 7 \add So I urge you,\add* who are all very dear to me, do not let anyone deceive you \add by telling you that it is all right to sin\add*. If you continue doing what is right, you are righteous, just like Christ is righteous.
\v 8 \add But\add* if anyone continues sinning, he is like the devil, because the devil has always been sinning. \add And\add* the reason why God's Son became a human being was to destroy what the devil has done. \v 9 People do not continue sinning repeatedly if they have become children of God. Instead, \add they\add* continue \add to conduct their lives according to the character/nature that God produced in them\add* [MET]. They cannot continually sin because God has caused them to become his children.
\v 10 Those who are God's children are clearly different from those who are ◄the devil's/Satan's► children. \add The way that we can know who are Satan's children is this\add*: Those who do not do what is right are not God's children. \add Specifically\add*, those who do not love their fellow believers are not \add God's children Instead, they are Satan's children\add*.
\s1 Because we have been changed from being spiritually dead people to being spiritually alive people, we should love each other genuinely by helping our fellow believers who are in need.
\sr 1 John 3:11-18
\p
\v 11 The message that you heard when you first [MTY] \add believed in Christ\add* is that we should love each other.
\v 12 \add We should\add* not \add hate others\add* as did \add Adam's son\add*, Cain, who belonged to \add Satan\add*, the evil one. \add Because Cain hated his younger brother\add*, he murdered him. ◄I will tell you about why he murdered his brother./Do you know why he murdered his brother [RHQ]?► It was because Cain habitually conducted his life in an evil way, and \add he hated his younger brother\add* because his \add younger\add* brother \add conducted his life\add* righteously.
\v 13 You should not be amazed/surprised, my fellow believers, when \add unbelievers\add* [MTY] hate you.
\v 14 We know that we have been changed from \add being spiritually\add* dead [MET] to \add being spiritually\add* alive. We know this because we love our fellow believers. \add Those who\add* do not love \add their fellow believers\add* are still \add spiritually\add* [MET] dead.
\v 15 Those who hate \add any of\add* their fellow believers, \add God considers\add* [MET] them \add to be\add* murderers. And you know that no murderer has eternal life.
\v 16 The way that we now know \add how to truly \add* love \add our fellow believers is by remembering \add* that Christ ◄voluntarily died/gave his life► for us. So, \add when our fellow believers \add need something, we should be willing to help them. We should even be willing to \add* die for them. \v 17 Many \add of us\add* have the things that are necessary for us to live in this world. If we become aware that any of our fellow believers do not have what they need and \add if we\add* refuse to ◄\add provide for them/give to them what they need\add*►, it is clear that we do not love God \add as we claim/say that we do\add*.
\v 18 \add I say to \add* all of you whom I love dearly, let us not merely say [MTY] that \add we love our fellow believers!\add* Let us genuinely/really love them by doing things \add to help them!\add* \s1 We must believe in God's Son and love each other in order to be confident that we have a close relationship with God and that we will receive what we ask from him. \sr 1 John 3:19-24 \p \v 19 When we \add truly love our fellow believers\add*, we can be sure that we are \add conducting our lives according to\add* the true message. \add As a result\add*, we will not feel guilty/ashamed \add when we talk\add* [MTY] to God.
\v 20 \add We can pray confidently\add*, because \add although\add* we might feel guilty/ashamed \add about our sins\add*, God is ◄greater/more worthy to be trusted► than what we feel. He knows everything \add about us\add*.
\v 21 Dear friends, when we do not feel guilty \add because of our sins\add*, we can pray to God confidently.
\v 22 And, when we confidently pray to him and request \add something from him\add*, we receive it because we do what he commands \add us to do\add*, and because we do what pleases him.
\v 23 \add I will tell you\add* what he commands \add us to do\add*: \add We must\add* believe that Jesus Christ is ◄his Son/the one who is also God►. \add We must\add* also love each other, just like he commanded \add us to do\add*.
\v 24 Those who do what God commands are ones who have a close relationship with God, and God has a close relationship with them. \add I will tell you how\add* we can be sure that God has a close relationship with us: It is because \add we have\add* his Spirit, whom he gave to us, that we can be sure that God has a close relationship with us.
\c 4
\s1 Continue to test the teachings you hear to know whether or not they are from God. You should test those who teach them by whether or not they acknowledge that Jesus Christ came in human form and also by what kind of people listen to that kind of teaching.
\sr 1 John 4:1-6
\p
\v 1 Dear friends, many people \add who have a false message\add* are teaching it to people [MTY]. So do not trust every \add message that someone claims/says that God's\add* Spirit [MTY] \add gave to him\add*. Instead, ◄test/think carefully about► the teachings that \add you hear\add* in order to know whether they are from God or not.
\v 2 \add I will tell\add* you how to recognize \add teachings that come from\add* the Spirit of God: Those who affirm/say that Jesus Christ came \add from God\add* to become a human \add like us\add* are \add teaching a message\add* that is from God.
\v 3 But those who do not affirm/say \add that about\add* Jesus are not \add teaching a message\add* from God. \add They are teachers who\add* oppose Christ. You have heard that people like that are coming \add to be among us\add*. Even now they are already here!
\p
\v 4 As for you who are very dear to me, you belong to God, and you have refused \add the false messages\add* that those people \add teach\add*, because \add God\add*, who enables you \add to do what he wants\add*, is ◄greater/more powerful► than ◄\add Satan/the devil\add*►, who enables ◄godless people/people who conduct their lives in a way that displeases God► [MTY].
\v 5 As for \add those who are teaching what is false\add*, they are ◄godless people/people whose lives are displeasing to God► [MTY]. Because of that, they teach what ◄godless people/people whose lives are displeasing to God► [MTY] want to hear. That is why the ◄godless people/people whose lives displease God► [MTY] listen to them.
\v 6 As for us \add (exc)\add*, \add because\add* we belong to God, whoever ◄knows/has a close relationship with► God listens to us. \add But\add* those who do not belong to God do not listen to us. That is how we can know whether \add the things that people are teaching\add* [MTY] are true or whether they are false, and deceiving \add people\add*.
\s1 We must love each other. God shows us what real love is.
\sr 1 John 4:7-11
\p
\v 7 Dear friends, we must love each other, because God \add enables us\add* to love \add each other\add*, and because those who love \add their fellow believers\add* have become God's children and ◄know/have a close relationship with► him.
\v 8 God's \add nature\add* is to love \add all people\add*. So those who do not love \add their fellow believers\add* do not ◄know/have a relationship with► God.
\v 9 I will tell you how God has shown us \add that he\add* loves us: He sent ◄his only Son/the only one who was also God► \add to live\add* on the earth to enable us to live \add eternally\add* as a result of \add our trusting in what\add* he \add accomplished for us by dying for us\add*.
\v 10 \add And God\add* has shown \add us what it means to\add* love \add another person\add*: \add It does\add* not \add mean\add* that we loved God, but \add it means\add* that God loved us and sent ◄his Son/the one who was also God► to sacrifice \add his life\add* in order that \add our sins might be forgiven\add* {\add he might forgive\add* our sins}.
\v 11 Dear friends, since God loves us like that, we certainly ought to love each other!
\s1 In order to be assured that we are conducting our lives according to God's character, we must love God and our fellow believers, because God loved us first.
\sr 1 John 4:12-21
\p
\v 12 No one has ever seen God. \add Nevertheless\add*, if we love each other, \add it is evident that\add* God lives within us and that we love others just like he \add intends/wants us to do\add*.
\v 13 \add I will tell you\add* how we can be sure that we have a close relationship with God and that God is within us: He has put his Spirit within us.
\v 14 We \add apostles\add* have seen ◄God's Son/the one who is also God►, and \add we tell people\add* that the Father sent him to save \add the people in\add* the world [MTY] \add from being punished for their sins\add*.
\v 15 \add So\add* those who affirm/say that Jesus is the ◄Son of/one who is also► God, God is within them, and they have a close relationship with God.
\v 16 We have experienced how God loves us and we believe that he loves us. \add As a result, we love others. Because\add* God's \add nature\add* is to love people, those who continue to love \add others\add* have a close relationship with God, and God has a close relationship with them.
\v 17 We \add should\add* love others completely. And if we do that, when the time comes for \add him to\add* judge us, we will be confident \add that he will not condemn us\add* (OR, \add that we have a close relationship with him\add*). \add We will be confident of that\add* because of our \add conducting our lives\add* in this world as Christ did.
\v 18 We will not be afraid \add of God\add* if we \add truly\add* love \add him\add*, because those who love \add God\add* completely cannot possibly be afraid \add of him\add*. \add We would be\add* afraid only \add if we thought that he would\add* punish us. So those who are afraid \add of God certainly\add* are not loving \add God\add* completely.
\v 19 We love \add God and our fellow believers\add* because God loved us first.

\v 20 \add So\add* those who say “I love God” but hate a fellow believer are lying. Those who do not love one of their fellow believers, whom they have seen, certainly cannot be loving God, whom they have not seen.
\v 21 Keep in mind that this is what God has commanded us: If we love him, we must also love our fellow believers.
\c 5
\s1 Those who believe that Jesus is God's Chosen One are people who have been caused to live spiritually, and they love their fellow believers. They obey God's commands and overcome the evils of human society.

\sr 1 John 5:1-5

\p
\v 1 All those who believe that Jesus is the ◄Messiah/person God sent \add to rescue us\add*► are ones who \add have truly\add* become children of God. And everyone who loves \add a man who is\add* someone's father will \add be expected to\add* love that man's children as well. \add Similarly, those who love God, who has caused them to become his children\add* [MET], \add should love their fellow believers, whom God has also caused to become his children\add*.
\v 2 The way we can be sure that we \add truly\add* love God's children is this: We are loving them when we love God and do what he commands \add us to do\add*.
\v 3 \add I say this\add* because our obeying what God commands \add us to do\add* is \add the same as\add* loving him. And it is not burdensome/difficult for \add us to do\add* what God commands \add us to do\add*.
\v 4 All of us whom God has caused to become his children have been able to successfully resist ◄doing what/conducting our lives like► the people [MTY] \add who\add* oppose God do. It is \add only\add* by our trusting \add in Christ\add* that we are able to ◄resist doing what/conducting our lives like► people in the world who are opposed to God [MTY] do.
\v 5 ◄\add I will tell you\add* who are the ones who are able to resist doing what the people who are opposed to God do./Do you know who are the ones who are able to resist conducting their lives like the people who are opposed to God [MTY] do? [RHQ]► It is those who believe that Jesus is ◄God's Son/the man who is also God►.

\s1 Jesus came from God to earth. Those who believe in and live united to him have eternal life.
\sr 1 John 5:6-12
\p
\v 6 \add Think about\add* Jesus Christ. He is the one who came \add to earth from God\add*. \add God showed that he had truly sent Jesus when Jesus was baptized\add* in water [MTY] and \add when Jesus'\add* blood \add flowed from his body when he died\add*. \add God showed this\add* not only \add when Jesus was baptized\add* [MTY], but also when Jesus' blood flowed \add from his body when he died\add*. And \add God's\add* Spirit declares \add truthfully that Jesus Christ came from God\add*. The Spirit always \add speaks what\add* is true.
\v 7 There are three \add ways \add* by which we know \add that Christ came from God \add*.
\v 8 \add Those three ways are: What God's\add* Spirit \add tells us, what God said when Jesus was baptized\add* [MTY] \add in/with\add* water, and \add Jesus'\add* blood \add that flowed from his body when he died on the cross\add*. These three things all tell us the same thing, \add that Jesus came from God\add*. \v 9 We \add usually\add* believe what \add other\add* people say. But what God says is more \add reliable/trustworthy than what people say\add*. So \add we must believe\add* what God has said is true \add about\add* ◄his Son/the one who is also God►.
\v 10 Those who trust in the Son of God know within their ◄inner beings/hearts► that \add what God\add* says \add about his Son is true. But\add* those who refuse to believe that \add what\add* God says is true are saying that God is a liar, because they refuse to believe what God has said about ◄his Son/the one who is also God►.
\v 11 This is what \add God\add* says \add to us\add*: “I have given you eternal life!” We will live forever if we have a close relationship with his Son.
\v 12 Those who have \add a close relationship with God's\add* Son (OR, who have accepted what God's Son \add has done for them\add*) have \add already\add* begun to live \add forever\add*. \add But\add* those who do not have a relationship with ◄God's Son/the one who is also God► (OR, who have not accepted what God's Son has done for them) have not begun \add to\add* live \add forever\add*.
\s1 We have a close relationship with God because we are united to his Son. Because of that relationship, we have eternal life.
\sr 1 John 5:13-21
\p
\v 13 I have written this \add letter\add* to you who believe that Jesus is [MTY] ◄God's Son/the one who is also God► in order that you may know that you have eternal life.
\v 14 Because we have a close relationship with him, we are very confident that he hears us when we ask him \add to do anything\add* that is in accordance with ◄his will/what he desires►.
\v 15 \add And\add* since we know that he hears whenever we ask \add him for something\add*, we \add also\add* know that \add it is as though\add* he has \add already\add* done what we requested him \add to do\add*.
\p
\v 16 Those who see one of their fellow believers sinning in a way that does not result in being eternally separated from God should ask \add God to help that fellow believer \add*; and \add as a result God \add* will help that fellow believer and enable him or her to live \add eternally. But some people \add* sin \add in a manner that causes them \add* to be separated from God eternally. I am not saying that \add you should \add* ask \add God to help \add* people who sin like that. \v 17 Everyone who does what is wrong is sinning, but there are some sins that do not cause a person to be separated from God.
\v 18 We know that if a person has new life from God [MET], that person does not continue sinning. Instead, the ◄Son of/one who is also► God protects him so that \add Satan\add*, the evil one, does not harm him \add spiritually\add*.
\v 19 We know that we belong to God, and \add we know\add* that the evil one controls all \add the evil people in\add* [MTY] the world.
\v 20 We also know that ◄God's Son/the one who is also God► has come \add to us\add*, and \add we know\add* that he has enabled us to know God, the one who is really/truly God. So now we have a close relationship with \add God because\add* we belong to Jesus Christ, the one who is the ◄Son of/man who is also► God. Jesus Christ is truly God, and \add he is the one who enables us to have\add* eternal life.

\v 21 \add I say to\add* you who are very dear to me, guard/keep yourselves from \add worshipping\add* gods \add that have no real power\add*
