\s1 Titus 1:1-4
\s1 I, Paul, have been appointed by God as his servant and as an apostle of Jesus Christ in order that I might lead God's people to know, believe, and practice the true teachings. I write this letter to you, Titus. May God continue to bless you.
\p
\v 1 I, Paul, \add am writing this letter to you, Titus\add*. \add God appointed me to be\add* his servant and \add to be\add* an apostle \add who represents\add* Jesus Christ. \add God appointed me in order that I might teach\add* those whom God has chosen \add to be his people\add* to \add correctly\add* believe \add in him\add*. He wants me to teach them the true \add teachings about God\add*, in order that they will learn to behave ◄in a \add godly manner/\add*in a \add manner that pleases God\add*►.
\v 2 \add As a result of my doing these things, they\add* confidently expect that God will cause them to live forever. God, who never lies, promised before he created the world that \add his people\add* would live forever.
\v 3 Then at the time that he \add chose\add*, he revealed \add to us his\add* message. \add Specifically\add*, God our Savior gave this message to me, and he trusted me to proclaim it to people.
\v 4 Titus, \add I am writing this letter\add* to \add you because you are like\add* a true son [MET] \add to me because I led/helped you to\add* believe the same \add teachings about Christ that I do\add*. ◄\add I pray that/May\add*► \add God our Father and Christ Jesus our Savior will continue to\add* act kindly toward you and cause you to have \add inner\add* peace.
\s1 I want you to teach the believers and to appoint elders.
\sr Titus 1:5
\p
\v 5 When I \add asked you\add* to stay on Crete \add island\add*, I wanted you to do these things: \add Teach the believers what they need to know so that they\add* can understand correctly the \add spiritual\add* matters about which some are teaching wrongly. Appoint elders \add in the congregation\add* in each town in the manner in which I told you to do.
\s1 Appoint as elders men whom no one can justly criticize.
\sr Titus 1:6-9
\p
\v 6 \add When you appoint men as elders\add*, you must choose men whom no one can \add justly\add* accuse of \add habitually\add* doing what is wrong (OR, whom everyone speaks well of). Specifically, appoint men who have been faithful to their wives. Appoint men whose children faithfully obey \add them. Do not appoint men whose children habitually\add* do all the things that their bodies urge them to do, or who refuse to obey their parents.
\v 7 Leaders \add of the congregation\add* must be \add men\add* who, as everyone knows, habitually do what is good (OR, \add whom\add* no one can \add justly\add* accuse of doing what is wrong), because it is on God's behalf that they will direct/serve \add the congregation. Specifically, they must\add* not be arrogant/proud. They must not easily become angry. They must not \add be men who\add* drink much alcohol. They must not \add be men who\add* ◄\add act\add* violently/fight► \add when they are angry. They must\add* not \add be men who are\add* ◄greedy for/strongly desire to get► money.
\v 8 Instead, they must be ones who welcome and take care of guests. They must ◄be devoted to/like to do► what is good. They must do \add what God considers\add* to be right. They must be ◄holy/completely dedicated to God►. They must be men who do what their minds tell them is right to do \add and not what their emotions/desires urge them to do\add*.
\v 9 They must firmly believe in the message \add about Jesus Christ\add* exactly as \add I/we(inc)\add* taught it, in order that they might be able to teach \add the believers\add* what is correct and to urge \add them to follow it well. If they firmly accept our message\add*, they will be able to convince those who oppose \add what is correct that they are wrong\add*.
\s1 Since there are many deceivers teaching what is false, who do not even know God themselves and are unable to do any good thing, rigorously convince those believers who follow false teachings that they are wrong in order that they will firmly believe in the correct teachings.
\sr Titus 1:10-16
\p
\v 10 \add I say this\add* because there are many \add people who oppose the correct teachings\add*. They refuse to obey people who have authority over them, they talk ◄\add on and on/without stopping\add*►, saying what helps no one, and they deceive people. The Jewish \add believers\add* [MTY] \add who insist we must obey all the Jewish rituals are\add* especially \add doing this\add*.
\v 11 \add You and the leaders whom you appoint\add* should prevent such people from teaching \add the believers\add*. They are causing whole families to stop believing in the correct teachings [MET] by means of their teaching \add people wrong ideas/teachings. They are teaching people only\add* in order that people will give them money, \add which is very\add* shameful \add for them to do\add*.
\v 12 A man from Crete \add island\add* whom \add they consider\add* a prophet said, “\add My fellow\add* Cretan people are always lying \add to one another! They are like dangerous\add* wild animals [MET]! They are lazy and always eat too much food [SYN]!”
\v 13 The words that this man said \add about the Cretan people\add* are \add still\add* true, \add especially about their being liars\add*. So, rigorously convince/show \add those Cretan believers\add* that those \add false teachings\add* are wrong. Tell them to \add firmly\add* believe in the correct teachings.
\v 14 \add Teach them that\add* they should no \add longer\add* listen to the stories that the Jews ◄made up/invented►. \add Especially\add* they should refuse to obey those who reject our true teachings, because those people are teaching things that only come from human beings, \add not from God\add*.
\v 15 \add Believers should reject\add* what they teach about food, \add because\add* no \add food that we eat\add* can make us unacceptable to God if we are pure \add in our\add* ◄\add inner beings/hearts\add*►. But if people are evil \add within themselves\add* and they do not trust \add in Christ Jesus\add*, there is no \add ritual\add* that can make them acceptable to God. Such people's way of thinking has been ruined {Such people have ruined their way of thinking}, and they do not even feel guilty \add when they do what is evil\add*.
\v 16 Even though they claim/say that they know God, by what they do they \add show that they\add* do not know ◄God/his true teaching►. They do not obey \add God\add*, and they are unable to do anything that he considers to be good. \add So God considers them to be absolutely\add* disgusting!
\c 2
\s1 Teach and urge the believers to behave in a manner that is consistent with the correct teachings in order that people will perceive that the teachings about God our Savior are very good.
\sr Titus 2:1-10
\p
\v 1 But as for you \add (sg)\add*, teach \add the believers\add* what agrees with the correct teachings.
\v 2 \add Specifically, tell\add* the older men that they should control themselves ◄in all situations/whatever happens►, \add that they should behave in such a manner\add* that all people will respect them, and that they should control what they say and do. And tell them that they should firmly believe in the correct teachings, that they should sincerely love others, and that they should always be steadfast.
\v 3 Similarly, \add tell\add* the older women that they should behave ◄in a reverent manner that shows that they are devoted to God/in a manner that honors God►; \add specifically, they should\add* not ◄slander others/talk evil about others►, and they should not ◄be drinking much.\add /habitually \add* drinking► \add alcohol\add*. Tell them that they should teach \add the younger women\add* what is good,
\v 4 in order that they may love their husbands and love their children.
\v 5 They should teach them to control what they say and do and to be pure in every way, to be good workers at home and submissive to their own husbands. \add The younger women should behave like this\add* in order that no one will speak against the message about God.
\v 6 As for the younger men, similarly, urge them to control themselves \add in all that they say and do\add*.
\v 7 You yourself must continually do what is good in order that others will see how they should behave. Teach \add the believers\add* sincerely and seriously;
\v 8 teach what is correct and what no one can \add justly\add* criticize. \add Do this\add* in order that \add when the believers\add* conduct their lives \add in a proper manner\add*, anyone who opposes ◄\add us/our message\add*► will be disappointed because there will be nothing bad that they can \add justly\add* say about us.
\v 9 As for slaves, \add specifically, urge them\add* to be submissive to their masters in everything. They should please \add their masters; specifically, they should not\add* ◄\add contradict/refuse to obey\add*► \add their masters\add*.
\v 10 They should not steal \add things that belong to their masters\add*. Instead, they should always be completely honest/reliable and thus \add show their masters that their masters can\add* completely trust them. They should behave like this in order that \add as a result of all the slaves conducting themselves well, people\add* will realize that the teachings about God our Savior are very desirable.
\s1 God very kindly sent Jesus Christ to earth in order that God might save all people and God graciously trains us to behave in a godly manner.
\sr Titus 2:11-14
\p
\v 11 \add The believers should behave in a good manner\add*, since God did for us what we did not deserve, \add sending Jesus Christ to earth\add* in order that he might save all people [PRS].
\v 12 God teaches/tells us [PRS] how to stop doing what he dislikes, and to stop desiring the things that ◄ungodly people/people who habitually do things that do not please God► desire [MTY]. He wants us to control our behavior and to do what is right and to do what pleases him while we live in this present age/time.
\v 13 \add Do not forget that\add* we are waiting expectantly for that which will make us very happy \add indeed\add* [MTY]! We are expectantly waiting for our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, to come gloriously!
\v 14 He is the one who \add willingly\add* gave himself ◄\add to die/as a sacrifice\add*► on our behalf to set us free from all sinful behavior! He wants ◄us to get rid of all our evil behavior/to make our lives pure► [MET]. He wants us, who are his very own people, to be \add people who\add* are eager to do what is good.
\s1 With full authority, teach these things, urge the believers to do them, and correct those believers who do not follow them.
\sr Titus 2:15
\p
\v 15 Teach \add the believers\add* these things! Urge \add them to do them!\add* Correct \add those who do not obey them! As you do this, you have my\add* full authority; so do not allow anyone to disregard you!
\c 3
\s1 Remind the believers to act appropriately toward authorities and kindly toward everyone.
\sr Titus 3:1-2
\p
\v 1 Remind \add the believers\add* that they should submit to all those who rule them or have authority over them, and that they should obey them. They should be ready to do anything that is helpful.
\v 2 They should never say bad things about anyone, they should not quarrel with people, they should be patient \add when others\add* ◄\add irritate them/do things that they do not like\add*►, \add and they should\add* always treat all people as important.
\s1 God acted kindly toward us and mercifully saved us, even though formerly we were behaving sinfully.
\sr Titus 3:3-7
\p
\v 3 \add Remind your congregations about these things\add* because formerly we \add believers\add* ourselves were also foolish, just like \add all people who do not believe in Christ are now. We\add* did not obey ◄\add God\add*/God's message►. \add We let\add* others deceive us. We ◄spent all our time doing/continually did► what is evil and could not stop ourselves from doing all the things that our bodies liked [DOU]. We were ◄envying others/desiring to have what others have►. We were causing people to hate us and we were hating one another.
\v 4-5 Even though we were behaving sinfully like this, he saved us! God our Savior \add acted\add* kindly and lovingly to us [PRS], \add and saved us!\add* He did this, not because we did things that are right, but just because he \add wanted to be\add* merciful to us! He washed \add us inwardly and gave\add* us a new way of living as a result of the Holy Spirit changing us inwardly.
\v 6 \add Because we trusted in\add* Jesus Christ our Savior, God put the Holy Spirit within us \add in order to\add* wonderfully \add change us\add*.
\v 7 He wanted to erase the record of our sins even though we did not deserve that, and he wanted us to receive all that \add God desires\add* to give us. \add These are the things that we\add* confidently expect to receive when we live \add with him\add* eternally.
\s1 I want you to confidently teach this trustworthy message to the believers in order that they will be constantly concerned with doing what is good for others.
\sr Titus 3:8a
\p
\v 8 These words that \add I\add* have said are trustworthy. So, I want you to confidently teach the things \add that I have written about in this letter\add* to those who have trusted in God, in order that they will be constantly devoted/attempting to do deeds that are good and helpful for others.
\s1 Have nothing to do with foolish disputes about genealogies and about the Jewish law; and do not allow divisive people who have turned away from the true teachings to influence the believers.
\sr Titus 3:8b-11
\p These \add teachings\add* are beneficial and profitable for \add all\add* people,
\v 9 but there are people who foolishly dispute/argue \add with you, wanting you to believe\add* senseless ◄\add myths/stories that came from your ancestors\add*►, stories in which there are ◄genealogies/lists of your ancestors' names►. They argue and quarrel \add with you\add*, ◄\add insisting/telling you\add*► \add that you must obey\add* the \add Jewish\add* laws. ◄Keep \add completely\add* away from/Do not talk with► them, because \add arguing about such things\add* is not profitable \add for anyone. It is completely\add* worthless!
\v 10 Those people, \add by teaching things that are false\add*, are causing others ◄to turn away from/to quit believing► the true teachings. You must warn them \add that God will judge them if they continue doing that. If they do not stop\add*, warn them one more time. \add If they still do not stop\add*, then no \add longer\add* allow them \add to influence the believers\add*.
\v 11 You will know \add clearly\add* that such persons have \add deliberately\add* ◄turned away \add from/quit believing and obeying\add*► \add the true teachings\add*. They know that they are doing what is sinful, \add but they deliberately keep on doing it\add*.
\s1 Make every effort to come to me at Nicopolis. Help Zenas and Apollos on their journey. All the believers should likewise learn to devote themselves to doing good deeds for people who especially need help.
\sr Titus 3:12-14
\p
\v 12 I \add expect to\add* send either Artemas or Tychicus to you. \add As soon as one of them arrives\add*, ◄make every effort/try hard► to come to me \add quickly\add* at Nicopolis \add city\add*, because it is there that I have decided to \add go and\add* stay during the stormy/winter \add season\add*.
\v 13 As for Zenas ◄the lawyer/the expert in the law► and Apollos, \add when they are ready to leave Crete Island\add*, help them as much as you can in order that they may have everything [LIT] that \add they need as they travel\add*.
\v 14 Moreover, our \add fellow believers\add* also should learn ◄to devote themselves to \add doing/\add*to constantly \add do\add*► good deeds \add for people\add* who need help in order that they, our fellow believers, will live very useful [LIT] lives.
\s1 Everyone who is with me greets you and the other true believers there. May our Lord Jesus Christ continue to act kindly toward all of you.
\sr Titus 3:15
\p
\v 15 \add As I finish this letter\add*, everyone who is with me ◄says that they are thinking affectionately about you/wants me to send greeting to you►. Tell those who are \add there\add* who love us and believe \add as we do\add* that we ◄are thinking affectionately about/greet► them. I pray/desire that our Lord Jesus Christ will continue to act kindly toward all of you.
