\mt2 The Apostle Paul wrote letters to his assistants. We call this letter
\mt1 2 Timothy
\c 1
\s1 2 Timothy 1:1-2
\s1 This letter is from me, Paul, to you, Timothy.
\p
\v 1 \add I\add*, Paul, \add am writing this letter. I am\add* an apostle whom Christ Jesus chose so that I would do what God wanted. He chose me \add to tell people that God\add* has promised \add that they will\add* live \add eternally\add* as a result of their having a close relationship with Christ Jesus.
\v 2 \add I am writing to you\add*, Timothy, whom I love \add as if you were\add* my own son. \add I pray that\add* God our Father and Christ Jesus our Lord will \add continue to act\add* kindly to you, be merciful to you, and \add cause you to have\add* inner peace,
\s1 I thank God that you sincerely believe in Christ Jesus.
\sr 2 Timothy 1:3-5
\p
\v 3 I thank God \add for all that he has done for you\add*. I serve him, and my ancestors \add served him, too. I serve him\add* in a manner that I know to be right. \add I thank him\add* while repeatedly I \add pray for you\add* at night and during the day.
\v 4 \add While I am thanking God for you\add*, I very much want to see you because I remember how you cried [MTY] \add when we separated. I want to see you\add* in order that I may be ◄filled with joy/very happy►.
\v 5 \add I thank God because\add* I remember that you sincerely believe \add in Christ Jesus\add*. First, your grandmother, Lois, and your mother, Eunice, \add believed in him and\add*, I am ◄convinced/very sure► that you also believe in him.
\s1 So I remind you to do fervently what God has enabled and assigned you to do.
\sr 2 Timothy 1:6-7
\p
\v 6 Because \add I am sure that you believe in him\add*, I remind you to do fervently/wholeheartedly [MET] what God has ◄assigned for/appointed► you to do and what he has enabled you to do. \add God\add* ◄\add assigned for/appointed\add*► you to do it as a result of my putting my hands \add on you to show/indicate that he had chosen you to do his work\add*.
\v 7 Remember that God has put \add his Spirit\add* within us. \add His Spirit does not cause us to be\add* afraid. Instead, \add he causes us to be\add* powerful \add to work for God\add*, and he helps us to love \add others\add* and \add to\add* control what we say and do.
\s1 Never be ashamed either of the message or of me, but be willing to endure with me whatever we suffer because we tell the good news.
\sr 2 Timothy 1:8-14
\p
\v 8 So never be ashamed/reluctant to tell others the message about our Lord. And do not \add be ashamed\add* of me, \add even though I am\add* a prisoner \add because I preach about\add* him. Instead, \add be willing to\add* suffer as I do as you proclaim the message about Christ. \add Endure what you will suffer\add* by letting God empower \add you to endure it\add*.
\v 9 \add God\add* saved us and chose us to conduct our lives in a pure way. It was not our doing good deeds/actions \add that caused him to do this for us—something\add* that we did not deserve. Instead, before ◄time began/he created the world► he purposed/planned to \add be kind to us\add* as a result of what Christ Jesus \add would do for us\add*.
\v 10 Now, as a result of our Savior Christ Jesus having come, it has been revealed {he has shown} \add that he acts kindly toward us. Specifically, Christ Jesus\add* has declared that we \add will not remain dead after we\add* die! He has also revealed that, as a result of \add our hearing and accepting\add* the message \add about Christ, we\add* will live \add forever in bodies that will\add* not decay!
\v 11 I was chosen {Christ chose me} to go as an apostle to many places and proclaim that message to people.
\v 12 So, even though I suffer \add here in this prison\add*, I am not ashamed \add of being here\add* (OR, I am very confident), because I know \add Christ Jesus\add*, the one whom I have trusted, and I am convinced/sure that he is able to keep safe the good message that he has entrusted to me (OR, the things that I have entrusted \add to him\add*), and that he will reward me at the time [MTY] \add when he comes again\add*.
\p
\v 13 Be sure that you tell others the same correct message that you heard from me. \add And as you tell it\add*, keep trusting \add in Christ Jesus\add* and keep loving \add others\add* as Christ Jesus \add enables you to do\add*.
\v 14 Do not let anyone persuade you to change the \add good message that\add* God has entrusted/given to you. Allow the Holy Spirit who lives in us to \add direct what you say\add*.
\s1 Many people have turned away from me, but Onesiphorus often refreshed me and was not ashamed of me.
\sr 2 Timothy 1:15-18
\p
\v 15 You know that \add almost\add* all \add the believers\add* in Asia \add province\add* have ◄turned away from/abandoned► me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes.
\v 16 \add But I pray that\add* the Lord will be kind to the family of Onesiphorus for the following reasons: Often he refreshed me and, \add even though\add* I was a prisoner [MTY], he was not ashamed ◄of me/\add to admit he was\add* my \add friend\add*►.
\v 17 On the contrary, when he came here to Rome \add city\add*, he diligently searched for me until he found me.
\v 18 \add I pray that\add* the Lord will be kind to him in that day [MTY] \add when he, the Lord, will judge people\add*. And how much Onesiphorus served \add me\add* in Ephesus \add city\add*, you know very well.
\c 2
\s1 Let God empower you; and entrust the message to loyal/trustworthy people.
\sr 2 Timothy 2:1-2
\p
\v 1 You \add are like a\add* son to me. So I urge also that you \add let God\add* empower you \add spiritually\add* as a result of Christ Jesus acting kindly toward you.
\v 2 \add As you do that\add*, remembering that \add the message\add* that you heard from me is the same message that other people have affirmed/declared to you, you must entrust/give that message to people whom you can trust, people who will be competent/able/qualified to teach others.
\s1 Endure with me what we suffer for Christ Jesus.
\sr 2 Timothy 2:3-13
\p
\v 3 Endure as I do what we suffer for Christ Jesus, like a good soldier \add endures what he suffers\add*.
\v 4 \add You know that\add* soldiers, in order to please their captain, do not ◄become involved in civilian affairs/spend time doing other kinds of work► [MET]. \add So, like soldiers, do not let other matters ◄distract you as you serve/hinder you from serving\add*► \add Christ Jesus!\add*
\v 5 \add Similarly, you know that\add* athletes who do not obey the rules of the contest will not be given {not win} the prize [MET]. \add So, like athletes, do all that Christ Jesus has commanded so that God will reward you!\add*
\v 6 \add You also know that\add* a hard-working farmer should be the first to receive some of the harvest [MET]. \add So, like farmers, work hard for Christ Jesus and expect that God will reward you!\add*
\v 7 Think about what I have just written, because, \add if you do\add*, the Lord will enable you to understand everything \add that you need to understand\add*.
\v 8 \add Endure everything by\add* remembering how Jesus Christ \add endured it when he suffered\add*. Remember that he was raised {God raised him} from the dead and \add God affirmed/declared him to be king as\add* his ancestor \add King\add* David was. Those are things that I tell to people when I tell them the message \add about Christ\add*.
\v 9 I am suffering \add here in prison\add* because \add some people oppose\add* the good message \add that I tell\add*. They have even put me in chains as if I were a criminal. Nevertheless, the message from God is not chained {nothing is preventing [MET] \add others from proclaiming\add* the message from God}.
\v 10 Therefore I \add willingly\add* endure all \add that I am suffering\add* for the sake of those \add whom God has\add* chosen. \add I do this\add* in order that Christ Jesus will save them, too, and that they will be forever with \add him in the\add* glorious \add place where he is\add*.
\v 11 \add Endure everything as you remember\add* that these words \add that we all say/sing\add* (OR, \add that we teach people\add*) \add are trustworthy\add*,
\q1 Since we have stopped behaving as we did in the past,
\q1 as though we died when he died,
\q1 we shall also live with him.
\q1
\v 12 Since we are also patiently enduring what we suffer,
\q1 we shall also rule with him.
\q1 But if we say that we do not know him,
\q1 he also will say that he does not know us.
\q1
\v 13 If we ◄are unfaithful/stop doing what he tells us to do►,
\q1 he will treat us just like he promised to do,
\q1 because he ◄can never be untrue to himself/always does what he says that he will do►.
\s1 Remind teachers about the things that I have told you and charge them not to quarrel; and be sure that you yourself are the kind of person that God will approve of.
\sr 2 Timothy 2:14-15
\p
\v 14 \add Those whom you appointed to teach others\add* God's truth, keep reminding them about these things that \add I have told you\add*. Tell them strongly that, since God knows what they are doing (OR, that God \add will judge them for everything that is wrong that they do, and therefore\add*) they must not quarrel ◄about words/about matters that are not important►, \add because, when teachers quarrel, it helps\add* no one, \add and because, when they quarrel, they spiritually\add* destroy those who hear them (OR, they cause those who hear \add them to\add* quit ◄being committed \add to Christ\add*/believing \add in Christ\add*►.)
\p
\v 15 ◄Do your best/Try hard► to be the kind of person that God will approve of. \add Be like a\add* good workman as you teach the true message accurately. If a workman works well, he will not need to be ashamed of (OR, will be pleased about) \add what he does\add*.
\s1 Have nothing to do with godless and foolish talk.
\sr 2 Timothy 2:16-19
\p
\v 16 ◄Stay away from/Do not talk with► \add those who talk foolishly and\add* ◄\add godlessly/say things that displease God\add*►, because \add those who talk foolishly\add* will become even more ◄ungodly/displeasing to God►,
\v 17 and \add because\add* their message will \add harm people\add* [SIM] \add like\add* gangrene/cancer does. \add You know\add* Hymenaeus and Philetus. They are \add two\add* such people \add who talk in this manner\add*.
\v 18 \add Specifically\add*, they teach a wrong message; \add that is\add*, they say \add wrongly that God will not raise the dead people because\add* he has already given us \add spiritual\add* life. \add They claim that our spiritual life is the only new life that we will receive. By saying that\add*, they cause some people
\v 19 not to continue to believe \add in Christ\add*. However, \add the congregations of\add* God are strong [MET]. \add They are like\add* a strong foundation on which is written: “The Lord knows the people who really belong to him,” and “Every person who calls Jesus [MTY] ‘Lord’ must stop doing wicked deeds”.
\s1 Avoid the bad things that some young people desire to do. Do good instead.
\sr 2 Timothy 2:20-22
\p
\v 20 In a wealthy person's house there are not only utensils made of gold and of silver, but also utensils made of wood and of clay. The gold and silver \add utensils are used\add* at special \add occasions/events\add*, and the others are used at ordinary \add occasions. Similarly, in a congregation there are those who\add* ◄\add are ready/desire\add*► \add to do great things for the Lord Jesus, and there are those like the teachers of false doctrines/teachings who are not\add*.
\v 21 Therefore, those who rid themselves of \add what is evil in their lives\add* will be able to \add work well for the Lord. They will be like\add* utensils [MET] used at special \add occasions\add*, set apart for and especially useful to the owner \add of the big house. They will be like fine utensils\add* that have been prepared {are ready} to do any kind of good work.
\v 22 \add Because of that\add*, you \add (sg)\add* must avoid doing the wrong actions that \add many\add* young people desire to do. Instead, you must earnestly do right actions, believe \add the true teaching\add*, love \add God and others, and you must continually be at\add* peace with those who ask the Lord \add to help them and who are\add* pure in every way (OR, who serve \add Jesus\add* faithfully).
\s1 Do not discuss foolish questions but gently instruct those who oppose the true message.
\sr 2 Timothy 2:23-26
\p
\v 23 Do not talk \add with anyone who\add* foolishly \add wants\add* to argue about matters that are not important. \add Do not talk with them\add*, because you know that \add when people talk about foolish things\add*, they begin to quarrel.
\v 24 But those who serve the Lord must not quarrel. Instead, they should be kind to all people, they should be ◄able to teach \add God's truth well/\add*good teachers►, and they should be patient \add with people\add*.
\v 25 \add That is, they should\add* gently instruct/teach people who oppose \add the true message. They should do that\add* in order that perhaps God will cause others to completely change what they think, so that they may acknowledge/believe the true \add message\add*.
\v 26 In that way they may get free from \add what is like\add* [MET] a trap \add set by\add* the devil. The devil has deceived them in order that \add they might do\add* what he wants \add them to do\add*.
\c 3
\s1 Realize that evil people will cause the last days to be difficult. Avoid such people.
\sr 2 Timothy 3:1-9
\p
\v 1 \add You need to\add* realize that during the last days [MTY] \add before Christ returns, evil people will make\add* it difficult \add for believers to behave as they should\add*.
\v 2 This is because \add such evil\add* people will be habitually loving themselves and loving money. They will habitually boast \add about themselves\add*, they will be proud, and will often say bad things \add about others. They\add* will disobey \add their\add* parents. They will not be thankful, nor will they respect \add anything that is good\add*.
\v 3 They will not \add even\add* love their own family, nor agree with \add anybody\add* (OR, \add they never forgive anyone\add*). They will tell lies about people. They will not control what they say and do, nor allow anyone to control them. They will not love \add anything that is\add* good.
\v 4 They will ◄betray others/hand others over to their enemies► and act foolishly. They will be overly/very proud of themselves, and they will love to please themselves instead of loving God.
\v 5 \add And, although they will\add* pretend that they worship God, they will not let \add God's Spirit\add* work powerfully \add in their lives\add*. Do not associate with such people (OR, Do not let such people join \add your congregation\add*),
\v 6 because some such \add people, even now\add*, subtly/deceivingly persuade foolish women to let them come into their houses, and then they deceive those women \add so that they control what those women think. These women\add* have been burdened with sins {have sinned very much} and they have been led to do {they do} the many \add evil\add* things that they strongly desire to do.
\v 7 \add Even though\add* they are always \add wanting to\add* learn new things, they are never able to recognize what is true.
\v 8 Just like Jannes and Jambres \add long ago\add* very much opposed Moses, so also some \add people\add* now oppose the true \add message. Those\add* people think only what is evil. God rejects them \add because they do not\add* believe \add what is true\add*.
\v 9 Nevertheless, they will not continue to succeed, because most [HYP] people will understand clearly that such people are foolish, just like people also realized \add clearly that Jannes and Jambres were foolish\add*.
\s1 Continue to believe what you have learned and been assured of.
\sr 2 Timothy 3:10-17
\p
\v 10 But as for yourself, you have fully known what I have taught. You have known \add and imitated\add* the way in which I conducted my life, \add and\add* what I have been trying to do. \add You have\add* trusted \add God as\add* I have \add You have been\add* patient as I have been. \add You have\add* loved people \add as\add* I have and \add you have\add* endured \add as you suffered like\add* I have \add suffered\add*.
\v 11 \add You know how I endured many times when people\add* harmed me. \add They\add* caused me to suffer at Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra \add cities\add*. \add But although they caused me to suffer\add*, I endured it; and every time \add they\add* did those things to me, the Lord rescued me.
\v 12 ◄Indeed/You know that►, for us \add (inc)\add* who want to live ◄in a \add godly manner/\add*in a \add manner that pleases God\add*►, we will always be persecuted {there will always be people who will cause us to suffer} because we \add have a close relationship with\add* Christ Jesus.
\v 13 Evil people (OR, And those) who deceive other people will ◄get worse/teach things that are more and more wrong►. \add Specifically, they will\add* deceive other people, and \add those who hear them will\add* deceive others.
\v 14 But you, in contrast, must continue \add to believe\add* what you have learned and ◄been assured of/firmly believe►. \add I know that you are confident/sure that it is true because\add* you know that you have learned it from all \add of us who taught you\add* ◄\add God's truth/what is right\add*►.
\v 15 From \add the time when you were\add* a child you have known the holy writings/Scriptures. \add You now know that\add* they enabled you to become wise so that God saved you because of your believing in Christ Jesus.
\v 16 God ◄inspired/put into men's minds► everything \add that is written\add* in the Scriptures {they \add wrote\add* in the holy writings}, and those writings are all useful to teach \add us what is true\add*, to cause us to know \add when we are\add* wrong and then ◄to correct us/to show us what we have done that is wrong►, and to train/teach us to do what is right.
\v 17 What \add is written\add* {they wrote} is useful to help us who \add serve\add* God to be ready/prepared to do all that we should do. By means of it, we are equipped {God gives us what we need} in order to do every \add kind of\add* good deeds.
\c 4
\s1 I solemnly charge you to preach the true message and do everything that you ought to do.
\sr 2 Timothy 4:1-8
\p
\v 1 Christ Jesus \add is going to come back and\add* judge those who are living \add when he comes\add* and those who will have died. He will judge them \add concerning what rewards they deserve, and\add* he will rule everyone. So, \add knowing that\add* he and God are watching \add everything that we do\add*, I solemnly/earnestly command you
\v 2 that you proclaim the \add true\add* message to people. Always be ready/prepared \add to proclaim it\add* whether people want to hear it or not. \add Some people are saying things that are not correct\add*; ◄refute their teaching/show why their teaching is wrong►. Rebuke them when they are doing wrong. Tell them what they ought to do. Be very patient while you teach them.
\v 3 \add Do these things\add* because there will be a time when people will not listen to good teaching. Instead, they will bring in many teachers for themselves who will tell them just what they want to hear [IDM]. \add The reason that they will bring in such teachers is\add* that they want to do the evil things that they desire.
\v 4 That is, they will not listen to [MTY] what is true, but will listen instead to \add strange\add* stories from our ancestors.
\v 5 \add Furthermore, I command that\add* you always control what you think and do. \add Be willing\add* to endure hardships/suffering. Your work should be telling people the message \add about Christ Jesus\add*. As you serve \add the Lord\add*, do everything that \add God has told\add* you to do.
\p
\v 6 \add Timothy, I say these things to\add* you because as for me, \add it is as though\add* [MET] \add they are now about to kill me. It is as though my blood will\add* be poured out {they will kill me} \add as a sacrifice on the altar\add*; that is, \add I know\add* that it is the time for me to die [EUP].
\v 7 \add And as to telling people the\add* good \add message and defending it\add*, I have ◄exerted myself thoroughly/done it with all my energy► [MET], \add like a boxer does. As to doing\add* the work that God gave me to do, I have completed it, \add like a runner who finishes\add* [MET] the race. \add As to\add* what we believe, I ◄have been loyal to it/continue to believe it►.
\v 8 \add So, like people award\add* a prize [MET] \add to the winner of a race\add*, the Lord, who judges rightly, will give me a reward \add because I have lived\add* righteously. He will give me that reward when [MTY] \add he judges people\add*. And not only \add will he reward\add* me, but he will also reward all those who very much want him to come back.
\s1 Do your best to come to me soon.
\sr 2 Timothy 4:9-15
\p
\v 9 ◄Do your best/Try hard► to come to me soon.
\v 10 \add I say that\add* because Demas has left me. He wanted very much \add the good things that he might enjoy\add* [MTY] in this world \add right now\add*, and so he went to Thessalonica \add city\add*. Crescens \add went to serve the Lord\add* in Galatia \add province\add*, and Titus went to Dalmatia \add district\add*.
\v 11 Luke is the only one who is still with me \add of those who were helping me. And when you come\add*, bring Mark with you, because he is useful to help me in my work.
\v 12 Tychicus \add cannot help me because\add* I sent him to Ephesus \add city\add*.
\v 13 And when you come, bring the coat that I left with Carpus in Troas \add city\add*. Also, bring the books, but ◄most of all/especially► \add I want\add* ◄the parchments/the animal skins► \add on which important things are written\add*.
\p
\v 14 Alexander, the man who makes things from metal, did many evil/harmful things to me. The Lord will punish him for what he did.
\v 15 So you, too, must beware of him. \add He will try to destroy your work if he can\add*, because he very much opposes the message that we \add proclaim\add*.
\s1 The Lord will rescue me from everything that is evil and bring me safely to heaven.
\sr 2 Timothy 4:16-18
\p
\v 16 When I first defended myself \add in court here\add*, no one came along \add to help defend\add* me. Instead, they all left me. \add I pray\add* that it will not be counted against {\add God\add* will forgive} them [LIT] \add for leaving me\add*.
\v 17 Nevertheless, the Lord was with me and strengthened me. He enabled me to fully preach the message, and all the non-Jewish people \add in the court\add* (OR, people from many nations) heard it. And I was rescued \add by the Lord\add* {\add the Lord\add* rescued me} \add from great danger, as if I were taken\add* [MET] out of a lion's (OR, wild animal's) mouth.
\v 18 \add Therefore, I am sure that\add* the Lord will rescue me from everything that is truly evil and will bring me safely to heaven, where he rules. Praise him forever! ◄Amen!/May it be so!►
\s1 Greet my friends there. Your friends here greet you. May the Lord bless you.
\sr 2 Timothy 4:19-22
\p
\v 19 Greet \add for me\add* Priscilla and \add her husband\add* Aquila and the family of Onesiphorus.
\v 20 Erastus stayed in Corinth \add city\add*. Trophimus, I left in Miletus \add city\add* because he was sick.
\v 21 ◄Do your best/Try hard► to come to me before ◄the stormy season/winter►. Eubulus, Pudens, Linus, Claudia, and many other fellow believers \add in this city\add* ◄send their greetings to/say that they are thinking affectionately about► you.
\v 22 \add I pray that\add* the Lord will \add help you in\add* your spirit, \add Timothy, and\add* that \add he\add* will act kindly toward all of you \add believers who are there\add*.
