\s1 Mark 1:1-8
\s1 The good message about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God, began when John, the Baptizer, as was prophesied long ago, announced the coming of Jesus.

\v 1-2 ◄\add This is/I want to tell you\add*► the good message about Jesus Christ, the Son of God (OR, the man who was also God). \add What I want to tell you\add* begins just like the prophet Isaiah \add said it would begin, when\add* he wrote \add these words that God said to his Son:\add*
\pi1 Listen! I am sending my messenger ahead of you. He will prepare \add people for\add* your \add coming\add*.
\v 3 He will call out to people \add who pass by where he is\add* in the desolate area, “As people improve and straighten out pathways \add before an important official arrives\add* [MET], make \add yourselves\add* ready [DOU] \add in order that you will be prepared when\add* the Lord \add comes\add*.”
\p
\v 4 \add The messenger that Isaiah predicted was\add* John. \add People called him\add* ❛The Baptizer❜. In the desolate area near the Jordan River he kept telling people, “If you want God to forgive you for having sinned, you must turn away from your sinful behavior \add before you ask me to\add* baptize \add you\add*.”
\v 5 A great number [HYP] of people who lived in Jerusalem \add city\add* and \add elsewhere\add* in the Judea \add district\add* were going out to where John was. There, \add after hearing John's message\add*, they \add responded by\add* confessing the sinful things \add that they had done\add*. Then they were being baptized by John {John was baptizing them} in the Jordan River.
\v 6 John wore \add rough\add* clothes made of camel's hair. And \add as the prophet Elijah had done\add*, he wore a leather belt around his waist; and what he ate was \add only\add* grasshoppers and honey \add that he found\add* in that desolate area.
\v 7 He was preaching, “Very shortly a man will come who is very great. I \add am nothing compared to him. Because he is so superior to me\add*, I am not even worthy to \add serve him like a slave\add* by stooping down and untying his sandals.
\v 8 I used \add only\add* water when I baptized you \add because you said that you wanted to change your lives\add*, but he will put his Holy Spirit \add within\add* you \add to truly change your lives\add*.”
\s1 God showed Jesus to be the Son of God by God's Spirit descending upon him; by Himself, God the Father, declaring it; by Satan testing him; and by the angels taking care of him.
\sr Mark 1:9-13

\v 9 During that time \add when John was preaching\add*, Jesus came from Nazareth \add town\add*, which is in Galilee \add district\add*. He went to \add where John was preaching\add* and he was baptized by John {John baptized him} in the Jordan \add River\add*.
\v 10 Immediately after \add Jesus\add* came up out of the water, he saw heaven opened up \add and he saw\add* the Spirit \add of God\add* descending on himself. He came in the form of a dove.
\v 11 And \add God\add* [MTY] spoke to him from heaven saying, “You are my Son, whom I love dearly. I am very pleased with you.”
\v 12 ◄Then/Right away► the Spirit \add of God\add* sent Jesus into the desolate area.
\v 13 He was there for forty days. During that time, he was tempted by Satan {Satan tempted him}. There were wild animals \add there\add* also. But angels took care of him.
\s1 After John was arrested, Jesus came and preached the good message that came from God.
\sr Mark 1:14-15

\v 14 Later, after John was put in prison {after \add soldiers\add* put John in prison} \add because he had rebuked the governor Herod Antipas for his sins\add*, Jesus went to Galilee \add district\add*. There he was preaching the good message \add that came\add* from God.
\v 15 He was repeatedly saying, “Now is the time when God will begin to rule people's lives \add in a new way\add*. \add So\add* turn away from your sinful behavior! Believe the good message \add in order\add* ◄\add to belong to him/to become those whose lives he will rule\add*►!”
\s1 Jesus showed his authority when he summoned four men, and they immediately went with him.
\sr Mark 1:16-20

\v 16 \add One day\add*, while Jesus was walking along by Galilee lake, he saw \add two men\add*, Simon and Simon's \add younger\add* brother, Andrew. They were casting their \add fishing\add* net into the lake. They \add earned money by\add* catching \add and selling\add* fish.
\v 17 Then Jesus said to them, “\add Just like you have been\add* gathering fish, come with me and I will \add teach\add* you how to \add gather people to become my disciples\add*” [MET].
\v 18 Immediately they abandoned \add the work that they were doing with\add* their nets, and they went with him.
\v 19 After they had gone on a little further, Jesus saw \add two other men\add*, James and James' \add younger\add* brother, John. They were the sons of \add a man named\add* Zebedee. They were both in a boat mending \add fishing\add* nets.
\v 20 As soon as Jesus saw them, he told them that \add they should leave their work and to come with him\add*. So they left their father, \add who remained\add* in the boat with the hired servants, and they went away with Jesus.
\s1 People were amazed as a result of Jesus expelling a demon from a man.
\sr Mark 1:21-28
\p
\v 21 \add Later\add* Jesus \add and those disciples\add* arrived at Capernaum \add town\add*. On the next ◄Sabbath/Jewish rest day►, after Jesus had entered ◄the synagogue/the Jewish meeting place►, he began teaching \add the people who had gathered there\add*.
\v 22 They were continually amazed at the way he taught. \add He did\add* not \add just teach what others had taught\add*, like the men who teach the \add Jewish\add* laws did. \add They habitually just repeated what other people had taught\add*. Instead, he taught with \add his own\add* authority.
\v 23 Suddenly, \add while he was teaching\add*, a man \add appeared\add* in their worship place who had an evil spirit in him, and he shouted,
\v 24 “Jesus, from Nazareth \add town, since\add* we \add evil spirits\add* have nothing in common with you, ◄\add do not interfere with us\add*!/what do you want with us \add evil spirits\add*?► [RHQ] ◄Do not destroy us \add now\add*!/Have you come to destroy us \add now\add*?► [RHQ] I know who you are. I know that you are the holy one \add who has come\add* from God!”
\v 25 Jesus rebuked \add the evil spirit\add*, saying, “Be quiet! And come out \add of the man\add*!”
\v 26 The evil spirit shook the man hard. He screamed loudly, and then he came out of the man \add and left\add*.
\v 27 All \add the people who were there\add* were amazed. As a result, they discussed this among themselves, \add exclaiming\add*, “◄This is \add amazing\add*!/What is this?► [RHQ] Not only does he teach in a new and authoritative way, but also the evil spirits obey him \add when\add* he commands \add them\add*!”
\v 28 The people very soon told \add many others\add* throughout the whole Galilee district what Jesus \add had done\add*.
\s1 Jesus healed Simon's mother-in-law.
\sr Mark 1:29-31

\v 29 After they left ◄the synagogue/the Jewish meeting place►, \add Jesus, Simon and Andrew\add*, along with James and John went directly to Simon and Andrew's house.
\v 30 Simon's mother-in-law was lying in bed because she had a \add high\add* fever. Right away someone told Jesus about her \add being sick\add*.
\v 31 He went to her, and helped her up by taking hold of her hand. She recovered \add at once\add* from the fever, and then she \add got up and\add* served them \add some food\add*.
\s1 Jesus healed many people and expelled many evil spirits from people.
\sr Mark 1:32-34

\v 32 That evening, after the sun had gone down \add and restrictions about travel\add* ◄\add on the Sabbath/on the Jewish rest day\add*► \add were ended\add*, some people brought to Jesus many people who were sick and others whose lives evil spirits were controlling.
\v 33 \add It seemed as though\add* everyone [HYP, MTY] \add who lived in\add* the town was gathered at the doorway \add of Simon's house\add*.
\v 34 Jesus healed many people who were ill with various diseases. He also expelled many demons \add from people\add*. He did not allow the demons to tell people \add about him\add*, because they knew that he \add had come from God, and for various reasons he did not want everyone to know that yet\add*.
\s1 Jesus traveled throughout Galilee, preaching and expelling evil spirits from people.
\sr Mark 1:35-39
\p
\v 35 Jesus got up very early \add the next morning\add* while it was still dark. He left \add the house\add* and went away \add from the town\add* to a place where there were no people. Then he prayed there. \v 36 Simon and his companions searched for him. When they found him, \add wanting him to go back to town to help other people\add*, they said to him,
\v 37 “\add Come back to the town with us, because\add* many [HYP] people \add in Capernaum\add* are looking for you!”
\v 38 He said to them, “\add No\add*, let's go on to the neighboring towns in order that I can preach there also, because the reason that I came \add into the world\add* was to \add preach to people\add* in many places!”
\v 39 So they went throughout Galilee \add district. As they did so, each ◄Sabbath/Jewish rest day\add*► he preached in ◄synagogues/Jewish meeting places►. He was also expelling evil spirits \add from people\add*.
\s1 Jesus cured a leper and arranged for him to be able to associate with people again.
\sr Mark 1:40-45

\v 40 \add One day\add* a man who had \add a bad skin disease called\add* leprosy came to Jesus. He knelt down in front of Jesus and then he pleaded with him saying, “\add Please heal me, because I know\add* you are able to heal me if you want to!”
\v 41 Jesus felt very sorry for him. \add So he ignored the religious laws about coming close to people who had that disease\add*. He reached out his hand and touched the man. Then he said to him, “Since I am willing \add to heal you\add*, be healed {I heal you} \add now\add*!”
\v 42 Immediately the man was healed! He was no longer a leper!
\v 43 Jesus spoke sternly to him before he sent him away.
\v 44 What Jesus said was, “Go to a local priest and show yourself to him \add in order that he may examine you and verify that you are healed\add*. Then, \add after the priest tells the local people\add*, they will know \add that you have been healed, and you will be able to associate with them again\add*. Make sure that you do not tell others \add about what happened\add* Then go to \add Jerusalem and take to the priest what Moses commanded that people who have been healed from leprosy should offer, in order that he\add* may offer it \add as a sacrifice to God\add*.”
\v 45 The man went \add and presented himself to the priest. But then\add* he began to tell many people about \add how Jesus had healed him\add* [DOU]. As a result, Jesus was no longer able to enter any town publicly \add because the crowds would surround him\add*. Instead, he remained outside \add the towns\add* in places \add where no people lived\add*. But people kept coming to him from all over that region.

\s1 By healing a paralyzed man Jesus demonstrated his authority to forgive sins as well as to heal.
\sr Mark 2:1-12
\p
\v 1 \add Jesus and his disciples\add* returned to Capernaum \add town\add*. A few days later, because it was {people} heard that Jesus was in \add his\add* house,
\v 2 many people gathered there. As a result, \add after the people filled the house\add*, there was no longer space to stand \add in the house or\add* around the doorway \add outside\add*. Jesus preached \add God's\add* message to them.
\v 3 Some people came to the house bringing to Jesus a man who was paralyzed. He was carried by four men {Four men carried \add him\add*} \add on a sleeping pad\add*.
\v 4 They were not able to bring the man to Jesus because there was a crowd there. So they \add went up the steps to the flat roof and\add* removed \add some of\add* the tiles \add above\add* where Jesus was. Then, after they made a \add big\add* hole in the roof, they lowered \add by ropes\add* the sleeping pad on which the paralyzed man lay. They lowered \add it through the hole, down in front of Jesus\add*.
\v 5 After Jesus perceived that the men believed \add that he could heal this man\add*, he said to the paralyzed man, “My friend, \add I\add* forgive your sins!”
\v 6 There were some men who taught \add the Jewish\add* laws sitting there. They started deliberating within themselves like this:
\v 7 “Who does this man think he is, talking like that [RHQ]? ◄He is insulting God!/Does he think he is God?► [RHQ] ◄No person can forgive sins!/Who can forgive sins?► [RHQ] Only God can forgive sins!”
\v 8 Jesus knew right away within himself that they were deliberating like that within themselves. So he said to them, “◄You should not question within yourselves \add whether I have the right to forgive this man's sins\add*!/Why do you question \add whether I have the right to forgive this man's sins\add*?► [RHQ]
\v 9 It is \add not risky\add* [RHQ] for someone to tell the man who is paralyzed, Your sins are forgiven {\add I\add* forgive your sins}, \add because no one can prove that it has happened\add*. But no one would say to him, Get up, pick up your stretcher, and then walk away, \add unless he really had the power to heal him, because people can easily see whether it happens or not\add*.
\v 10 So I \add will do something\add* in order that you may know that \add God\add* has authorized me, the one who came from heaven, to forgive sins on earth \add as well as to heal people\add*.” Then he said to the paralyzed man,
\v 11 “To you I say, Get up! Pick up your sleeping pad! And then go home!’”
\v 12 \f + \fr 2:12 \ft COL 5:1 - prj:T4T1.COL.5:1\f* The man stood up immediately! He picked up the sleeping pad, and then he went away, while all the people \add there\add* were watching. They were all amazed, and they praised God and said, “We have never before seen anything like \add what happened\add* just now!”
\s1 Jesus invited Levi to be his disciple and refuted those who objected to his associating with such people.
\sr Mark 2:13-17
\p
\v 13 Jesus left \add Capernaum town again and walked with his disciples\add* alongside \add Galilee\add* lake. A large crowd came to him. Then he taught them.
\v 14 As he walked on further, he saw a man named Levi, whose other name was Matthew, and whose father's name was Alpheus. He was sitting in his office where he collected taxes \add for the Roman government\add*. Jesus said to him, “Come with me \add and become my disciple\add*!” So he got up and went with Jesus.
\p
\v 15 \add Later\add*, Jesus was eating a meal in Levi's house. Many men who collected taxes and \add other\add* people who were \add considered to be\add* sinning regularly were eating with Jesus and his disciples. \add This was not surprising\add*, for there were many people like this who were going \add everywhere\add* with Jesus.
\v 16 The \add men who taught the Jewish\add* laws \add who were there\add* and who were members of the Pharisee \add sect\add* saw that Jesus was eating with men who collected taxes and \add others who were considered\add* {\add whom they considered\add*} \add to be\add* sinners. So they said to his disciples, “◄It is disgusting that he eats with \add such disgusting\add* men as those who collect taxes, and with \add other\add* sinners!/Why is it that he eats with \add such disgusting\add* men as those who collect taxes, and with \add other\add* sinners?►” [RHQ]
\v 17 After Jesus heard \add what they were saying\add*, he said to the men who taught the \add Jewish\add* laws, “People who \add consider that they\add* are well do not seek a doctor. On the contrary, it is those who are sick \add who seek a doctor\add* [MET]!” \add This he said to indicate that it was those who knew that they had sinned who were coming to him in order that he might help them spiritually\add*. And he said, “I did not come to invite people \add who think that\add* [IRO] they are righteous \add to come to me and turn from their sinful behavior\add*. On the contrary, I came \add from heaven to invite\add* people who \add know that they\add* are sinners, \add in order that they might turn from their sins and come to me\add*.”
\s1 Jesus told them it was inappropriate for his disciples to show sorrow by fasting while he was with them, and that requiring people to perform rituals like fasting was inconsistent with the new way of life he was bringing.
\sr Mark 2:18-22
\p
\v 18 The disciples of John \add the Baptizer\add* and some men who belonged to the Pharisee \add sect\add* used to abstain from food \add to show that they wanted to please God\add*. One day, some people came \add to Jesus\add* and asked him \add critically\add*, “The disciples of John and the Pharisees ◄fast/abstain from food► \add from time to time\add*, but your disciples do not. \add We think they should abstain from food also. What do you say about that\add* [RHQ]?”
\v 19 \add Jesus wanted them to understand that it was not appropriate for his disciples to show sorrow by abstaining from food while he was still with them\add*. So he said to them, “When a man is marrying a woman, his friends will certainly not abstain from food while he is still with them, will they [RHQ]? No. During the time that he is with them, they will not abstain from food \add because they are happy together\add*.
\v 20 But some day, he will be taken away {his \add enemies\add* will take him away} from them. Then, in those days, they will abstain from food, \add because they will be sad\add*.”

\v 21 \add Jesus wanted to show that those who desire to live in accordance with his new message should not try to continue to obey the old religious traditions like fasting. So he also said to them\add*, “People do not sew a patch of unshrunken cloth on an old garment \add in order to mend a hole\add*. If they did that, \add when they washed the garment, the patch would shrink\add* and the new \add piece of cloth\add* would tear off more of the old cloth. As a result, the hole would become bigger!
\v 22 \add Similarly\add*, people do not put newly \add squeezed\add* grape juice into old skin bags \add to store it\add*. If they did that, that juice will burst the skin bags \add because they would not stretch when the wine ferments and expands\add*. As a result both the wine and the skin bags would be ruined! On the contrary, people must put new wine into new skin bags!” [MET]
\s1 When the Pharisees complained about Jesus' disciples plucking grain on the Sabbath day, Jesus replied that there was Scriptural precedent for ignoring religious laws if there was a physical need, and that he is the one to decide what people should do on the Sabbath.
\sr Mark 2:23-28
\p
\v 23 On one ◄Sabbath/Jewish day of rest► Jesus was walking through some grain fields with his disciples. As they were walking along \add through the grain fields\add*, the disciples were plucking some of the heads of grain. \add They rubbed them in their hands to remove the chaff, and were eating the grain. The laws of Moses permitted people to do that if they were hungry\add*.
\v 24 \add Some of\add* the Pharisees \add saw them doing what they considered to be work. So they\add* said to him, “Look! ◄They should not be doing on our ◄Sabbath day/day of rest► \add work\add* that our laws forbid!/Why are they doing on our ◄Sabbath day/day of rest► \add work\add* that our laws forbid?► [RHQ]”
\v 25 \add Jesus wanted to show them that the record in the Scriptures indicated that God permitted people to disobey certain religious laws when they needed food\add*. So he said to them, “\add It is written in the Scriptures\add* what \add our revered ancestor, King\add* David, did when he needed food, and both he and the men with him were hungry. You have read about that, but ◄\add you do not think about what it implies./why do you not think about what it implies\add*?► [RHQ]
\v 26 During the time Abiathar was high priest, David entered the big tent \add where people worshipped\add* God \add and asked for some bread. The high priest gave him some\add* of the loaves of bread. That bread was the bread he had presented to God. It was permitted in one of Moses' laws that only the priests could eat that bread! But David ate some of it. Then he also gave some of it to the men who were with him. \add But God did not consider that was wrong!\add*”
\v 27 Jesus said to them further, “\add God\add* established ◄the day of rest/the Sabbath day► \add to help\add* people! He did not create people to \add obey rules about\add* ◄the Sabbath/the day of rest►!
\v 28 And \add think about this\add*: I am the one who came from heaven. So I have the authority \add to determine what is right for my disciples to do\add* ◄on the Sabbath/on the Jewish rest day►!”

\s1 After Jesus healed a man with a withered arm on the Sabbath, Jewish leaders began to plan to kill him.
\sr Mark 3:1-6
\p
\v 1 \add On another\add* ◄\add Sabbath/Jewish day of rest\add*►, Jesus entered ◄the synagogue/the Jewish meeting place► again. There was a man there whose hand was shriveled.
\v 2 \add Some men of the Pharisee sect\add* watched him carefully in order to see whether he would heal the man ◄on the Sabbath/on the Jewish rest day►. They did this in order that \add if he healed the man\add*, they would accuse him of disobeying \add their Jewish laws, because he worked\add* ◄\add on the Sabbath/on the Jewish rest day\add*►.
\v 3 Jesus said to the man whose hand was shriveled, “Stand up here in front of everyone!” \add So the man stood up\add*.
\v 4 Then Jesus said \add to the Pharisees\add*, “Do the laws \add that God gave Moses\add* permit people to do good ◄\add on the Sabbath/on the Jewish rest day\add*►, or do they permit people to do evil? Specifically, do his laws permit us to save a person's life ◄on the Sabbath/on the Jewish rest day►, or \add do they permit us\add* to let him die \add by refusing to help him\add*?” But they did not reply.
\v 5 He looked around at them angrily. He was very distressed that they were stubbornly \add not wanting to help the man\add*. So he said to the man, “Reach out your hand!” When the man reached out his withered hand, his hand became all right again!
\v 6 Then the Pharisees \add decided to get rid of Jesus. So\add* after they left \add the meeting house\add*, they \add immediately met with some of\add* the Jews who supported Herod \add Antipas, who ruled Galilee district\add*. Together they planned how they could kill Jesus.
\s1 Many people came from various areas to hear Jesus, because he had healed many.
\sr Mark 3:7-12
\p
\v 7 Jesus and his disciples left \add that\add* town and went to an area further along \add Galilee lake in order to get away from the people\add*. But a great crowd of people followed him. They were people who came from Galilee \add district\add*,
\v 8 from Jerusalem \add city\add*, from \add other towns of\add* Judea \add district\add*, from Idumea \add district\add*, from \add the region on\add* the \add east\add* side of the Jordan \add River\add*, and from \add the region\add* around Tyre and Sidon \add cities\add*. This great crowd of people came to him because they heard about what he was doing.
\v 9-10 Because he had healed many people, many \add other\add* people who had various illnesses pushed forward in order that by touching him \add they would come well\add*. So he told his disciples that they should get a small boat ready for him \add to get in and teach from it\add*. He wanted to do this in order that the crowd would not crush him \add when they pushed forward to touch him\add*.
\v 11 Whenever the evil spirits saw Jesus, \add they caused the people whom they controlled\add* to fall down in front of Jesus \add in recognition of Jesus' power\add*. Then they exclaimed, “You are ◄the Son of God/the man who is also God►!”
\v 12 He commanded the \add evil spirits\add* strongly that they should not tell anyone who he was.
\s1 Jesus appointed the twelve apostles.
\sr Mark 3:13-19
\p
\v 13 Jesus went \add with many other people\add* up into the hills. After he picked out \add from among them\add* the men whom he wanted \add to accompany him\add*, they came \add close\add* to him. \v 14 He appointed twelve men in order that they might be with him and in order that he might send them out to preach. He called them apostles.
\v 15 He also gave them power in order that they might expel evil spirits \add from people\add*.
\v 16 These were the twelve men he appointed: Simon, to whom he gave the \add new\add* name Peter; his \add younger\add* brother Andrew;
\v 17 James, \add the son\add* of Zebedee, and John, the \add younger\add* brother of James, to \add both of\add* whom he added the \add new\add* name, ❛Men who are like Thunder❜.\add because of their fiery zeal\add*;
\v 18 Philip; Bartholomew; Levi, whose other name was Matthew; Thomas; \add another\add* James, the son of Alphaeus; Thaddeus; \add another\add* Simon, who was a \add member of the party that wanted\add* to overthrow \add the Roman government\add*;
\v 19 and Judas Iscariot (OR, \add from the town of\add* Kerioth). He was the one who \add later\add* ◄betrayed Jesus/helped Jesus' enemies seize him►.
\s1 Jesus explained why their claim that he was expelling evil spirits by Satan's power was ridiculous, and that such a claim was an unforgivable sin.
\sr Mark 3:20-30
\p
\v 20 Jesus \add along with his disciples\add* went to the house where he was staying \add in Capernaum. Again a crowd gathered where he was\add*. There were many people crowding around him, so that he and his disciples had no time when they could eat or \add when they could do anything else\add*.
\v 21 After his relatives heard about this, they went to take him home \add with them\add* because ◄some people/they► were saying that he was insane.
\p
\v 22 \add Around that time\add* some men who taught the \add Jewish\add* laws came down from Jerusalem \add city. They heard that Jesus was expelling demons\add*. So they were telling \add people\add*, “Beelzebub, who rules the evil spirits, controls him. He is the one who enables this man to expel evil spirits \add from people\add*!”
\v 23 Jesus summoned those men. \add Then he spoke to them\add* in parables \add to enable them to realize that Satan would not oppose his own evil spirits. He also wanted them to realize that by expelling evil spirits, he was demonstrating that he was much more powerful than Satan\add*. So he said, “◄\add It is ridiculous\add* to suggest that Satan would expel his own \add evil spirits\add*!/Why would Satan expel his own \add evil spirits\add*?► [RHQ]
\v 24 If \add people who live in the same\add* country are fighting one another, they will cease to be a single group under one ruler.
\v 25 And if \add people who live in the same\add* house fight each other, they will certainly not remain \add as one family\add*.
\v 26 Similarly, if Satan and his \add evil spirits\add* were fighting one another, instead of remaining strong, he would become powerless.
\v 27 Contrary to \add what you say about me\add*, someone can enter the house of a strong man \add like Satan\add* and carry off his possessions only if he first ties up the strong man. Then \add and only then\add* will he \add be able to\add* steal the things in that man's house.”
\v 28 \add Jesus also said\add*, “Consider this carefully! People may sin in many ways and they may speak evilly about God, but \add if\add* they \add then are sorry and ask God to\add* forgive \add them\add*, \add God\add* will forgive them for doing that.
\v 29 But if anyone speaks evil words about what the Holy Spirit \add does\add*, \add God\add* will never forgive that. That person's guilt will remain with him forever.”
\p \v 30 \add Jesus told them that\add* because \add they refused to admit that the Holy Spirit was helping him to expel demons. Instead\add*, they were saying, “An evil spirit is controlling him!”
\s1 Jesus told them that those who obey God are as dear to him as his close relatives.
\sr Mark 3:31-35

\v 31 Jesus' mother and \add younger\add* siblings arrived. While they stood outside, they sent \add someone inside\add* in order to call him \add outside\add*.
\v 32 A crowd was sitting around Jesus. One of them said to him, “Listen/Hey, your mother and your \add younger\add* brothers and sisters are outside, and they are wanting ◄to see/to talk with► you!”
\v 33 Jesus replied to them, “◄\add I will tell you something about\add* my mother and my brothers.\add /Do you know whom I consider to be like\add* my mother and my brothers?►” [RHQ]
\v 34 After he looked around at \add the disciples\add* who were sitting around him \add in a circle\add*, he said, “Look here! I \add love these men as much as\add* I \add love\add* my mother and my brothers.
\v 35 Those who habitually do what God wants are \add as dear to me\add* [MET] as my brother, my sister, or my mother!”

\s1 Jesus taught the crowds by parables about the various ways that people who hear his message react.
\sr Mark 4:1-25

\v 1 Another time Jesus began to teach \add people\add* alongside Lake \add Galilee. As he was doing that, a very large crowd gathered around him. Because people were jostling him\add*, he got into a boat in the lake \add so that he could speak to the crowd better. Then he sat in it and began to teach the crowd from the boat\add*. At the same time, the crowd was on the shore close to the lake.
\v 2 Then he taught them many parables. While he was teaching them, he told them \add this\add*:
\v 3 “Consider \add well the meaning of this illustration\add*: A man/farmer went out \add to his field\add* to sow \add some seeds\add*.
\v 4 As he was scattering them \add over the soil\add*, some \add of the\add* seeds fell on the path. Then some birds came and ate those seeds.
\v 5 Other \add seeds\add* fell on ground where there was not much soil \add on top of\add*rock. Very soon the \add seeds\add* sprouted because \add the sun warmed\add* the moist soil quickly where it was not deep. \v 6 But after the sun shone \add on those young plants\add*, they became scorched. Then they withered because they did not have \add deep\add* roots.
\v 7 As the farmer sowed, other \add seeds\add* fell on \add ground that contained roots of\add* thorny plants. \add The\add* seeds \add grew, but\add* the thorny plants also grew up and crowded out \add the\add* good \add plants. So the plants\add* produced no grain.
\v 8 But as the farmer sowed, other \add seeds\add* fell on good soil. As a result, they sprouted, they grew well, and then they produced \add plenty of\add* grain. \add Some\add* plants bore 30 \add grains\add*. \add Some\add* bore 60 \add grains\add*. \add Some\add* bore 100 \add grains\add*.” \v 9 Then Jesus said, “If you want to understand this [MTY], you should consider \add carefully what I have just said\add*.”

\v 10 \add Later\add*, when only the twelve \add disciples\add* and a few \add other\add* people were with him, they asked him about the parables.
\v 11 He said to them, “People have not understood before \add the new message\add* about how God wants to rule people's lives. It is to you that this is being made known {that I am making this known}. But I tell about this \add only\add* ◄in parables/figuratively► to those who have not \add yet invited God to rule their lives\add*.
\v 12 As a result \add it is true what a prophet has written\add*,
\pi1 Although they see \add what I do\add*, they do not perceive \add what it means\add* [DOU]. Although they hear \add what I say\add*, they do not understand \add what it means\add* [DOU]. So they do not ◄repent/turn away from their sinful behavior► in order that they would be forgiven {\add God\add* would forgive them}.”
\p \v 13 He also said to them, “◄\add I am disappointed that\add* you do not understand this illustration!/Can you not understand this illustration?► [RHQ] \add If you do not understand\add* this, ◄you will certainly not understand any of the \add other\add* illustrations!/how will you understand any of the \add other\add* illustrations?► [RHQ] \add Nevertheless, I will explain it to you\add*.
\v 14 \add In the illustration that I told you\add*, the man who sows \add seeds represents someone who\add* declares God's message [DOU].
\v 15 \add Some people are like\add* the path on which \add some of\add* the seeds fell. When they hear \add the message\add*, Satan comes at once and causes them to forget what they have heard.
\v 16 \add Some people are like the ground where the soil was not very deep over\add* the rock. When they hear \add God's\add* message, they immediately accept it with joy.
\v 17 But, because \add the message does not penetrate deeply\add* [MET] \add into their hearts/inner beings, they\add* believe it for \add only a short time. They are like the plants that\add* did not have deep roots. When others treat such people badly or cause them to suffer because \add they believe\add*, those people \add who are suffering\add* soon stop believing God's message.
\v 18 \add Some people are like\add* the \add soil that had roots of\add* thorny weeds in it. \add Although\add* those people hear \add God's\add* message,
\v 19 they desire to be rich, and they desire to own many other things. So they worry \add only\add* about material things. The result is that they forget \add God's\add* message and they do not do \add the things that God wants them to do\add*.
\v 20 \add But some people\add* are like the good soil. They hear \add God's\add* message and they accept it \add and they believe\add* it. \add Then they do the things that God wants them to do. They are like the good plants that produced\add* 30, 60 or 100 \add grains\add*.”
\p \v 21 He also told them \add another parable\add*, saying, “◄People certainly do not \add light\add* an oil lamp and then bring it \add in the house\add* in order that it may be put {someone may put it} under a container or under a bed./Would anyone \add light\add* an oil lamp and then bring it \add in the house\add* in order that it may be put {someone may put it} under a container or under a bed?► [RHQ] ◄No, \add they light it\add* in order that it may be put {someone may put it} in a place \add where it lights the house\add*.\add /Wouldn't they light it\add* in order that it may be put {someone may put it} in a place \add where it lights the house\add*?► [RHQ]
\v 22 \add Similarly\add*, there are some \add parts of God's message\add* that people do not know. \add But he intends that\add* people will understand all the things that they do not know \add now\add*.
\v 23 If you want to understand this, you should consider \add carefully\add* what you \add have just heard\add*.”
\p
\v 24 Then he said to them, “Consider carefully what you hear \add me say to you\add*, for \add God\add* will let you \add understand\add* to the same degree that you \add consider what I say\add*. \add He\add* will let you \add understand\add* even more than that.
\v 25 Those who \add consider what I say\add* and understand it, \add God\add* will enable them to understand more. But those who do not \add consider carefully what I say\add*, they will forget even what they already know.”
\s1 Jesus told them two parables to show them how the number of people who will submit to God's rule over their lives will greatly increase.
\sr Mark 4:26-34

\v 26 Jesus also said, “God \add has the power to change\add* people who let him rule their lives. I \add will illustrate how that can happen\add* [MET]. A man planted seeds in the ground.
\v 27 Afterwards he slept each night and rose each day \add without worrying about the seeds\add*. \add During that time\add* the seeds sprouted and grew in a way that he did not understand, because by itself the soil \add caused the plants to grow and produce grain\add*.
\v 28 First the stalks \add appeared\add*. Then the heads \add appeared\add*. Then the full kernels in the heads \add appeared\add*.
\v 29 As soon as the grain was ripe he sent \add people\add* [MTY] to harvest it because it was time to harvest \add the grain\add*.”
\p
\v 30 \add Jesus told them\add* another \add parable. He\add* said, “I will tell you [RHQ] how the \add number of people\add* whose lives God rules in a new way \add will continue to grow\add* (OR, each continue to have more and more influence in this world). I hope [RHQ] that this illustration will show this \add to you\add*.
\v 31 \add You know what happens to\add* mustard seeds when we plant them. Though mustard seeds are among the smallest of seeds, \add here in Israel\add* they become large plants.
\v 32 After they are planted, they grow up and become larger than the other garden plants. They put out big branches so that birds are able to make nests in their shade.”
\p
\v 33 Jesus used many such illustrations when he talked to the people about God. If they were able to understand \add some, he kept telling them more\add*.
\v 34 He always used parables when he spoke to them. But he explained all \add the illustrations\add* to his own disciples when he was alone with them.
\s1 While Jesus and his disciples crossed the sea in a boat and while Jesus slept, a storm arose, so the disciples woke him and he calmed the storm.
\sr Mark 4:35-41

\v 35 On that same day, when the sun was setting, Jesus said to \add his disciples\add*, “Let's cross over to the opposite side of \add Lake Galilee in the boat\add*.”
\v 36 So they left the crowd, \add got in\add* the boat where Jesus \add already\add* was, and left. \add Other people\add* went with them in other boats.
\v 37 A strong wind came up and the waves started coming into the boat! The boat was soon nearly full \add of water\add*!
\v 38 Jesus was in the back part of the boat. He was sleeping, \add with his head\add* on a cushion. So they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher! ◄You ought to be concerned that we are about to die!/Are you not concerned that we are about to die?► [RHQ]”
\v 39 So Jesus got up and rebuked the wind. Then he said to the lake, “Be quiet! Be still! [DOU]” The wind stopped blowing and then \add the lake\add* became very calm.
\v 40 He said to the disciples, “◄\add I am disappointed that\add* you are afraid \add like that\add*!/Why are you afraid \add like that\add*?► [RHQ] Do you not yet believe \add that I can protect you\add*?”
\v 41 They were very awestruck. They said to one another, “\add Not only do the demons obey this man, but \add* even the wind and the waves obey him! “◄What kind of man is he?/This man is \add not like ordinary \add* people!► [RHQ]”

\s1 Jesus expelled evil spirits from a Gerasene man and then allowed them to enter a herd of pigs, which then ran down a hill and drowned. As a result, the local people asked Jesus to leave the area.
\sr Mark 5:1-20
\p
\v 1 Jesus and his disciples arrived on the \add east\add* side of Lake \add Galilee. They landed near\add* where the Gerasene \add people lived\add*.
\v 2 There was a man in that region whom evil spirits controlled.
\v 3 \add Because that man was violent and people were afraid of him\add*, they had tied him up many times. \add As he grew more violent\add*, no one was able to tie him up any longer, not even with chains,
\v 4 because the chains would be broken by him {he would break the chains} whenever he was bound {they bound him} with them. The iron shackles would also be smashed by him {He would also smash the iron shackles} whenever they were fastened {they fastened them} \add on his feet\add*.
\v 5 He lived in one of the caves \add where they bury dead people\add*. During both night and day he would scream among the caves and in the hills. He would also cut himself with \add sharp\add* stones. \add That day\add* he came out of the caves.
\v 6 As Jesus \add and his disciples got\add* out of the boat, that man saw Jesus from a distance. He immediately ran to Jesus, and then he knelt before him.
\v 7-8 Jesus said to the evil spirit, “You evil spirit, come out of this man!” \add But the demon did not leave quickly\add*. It shouted very loudly, “Jesus, I \add know that you are the\add* Son of God, so ◄we have nothing in common./what do we have in common?► [IDM, RHQ] \add So leave me alone\add* I ask you to promise, knowing God is listening, that you will not torture me \add now\add*!”
\v 9 \add So, in order to expel the demon more easily\add*, Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Crowd/Mob because there are many of us \add evil spirits in this man\add*.”
\v 10 Then the evil spirits fervently kept begging Jesus that he not send them out of the region.
\v 11 \add At the same time\add*, a large herd of pigs was ◄grazing/rooting for food► nearby on the hillside.
\v 12 So the evil spirits pleaded with Jesus, “Allow us to go to the pigs in order that we might enter them!”
\v 13 He permitted them \add to do that\add*. So the evil spirits left the man and entered the pigs. The herd, \add which numbered\add* about 2,000, rushed down the cliff into the lake, and drowned in the lake.
\p
\v 14 The men who had been tending the pigs ran and reported in the town and the countryside \add what had happened. Many people\add* went to see what had happened.
\v 15 They came to \add the place where\add* Jesus \add was\add*. Then they saw the man whom evil spirits had \add previously\add* controlled. He was sitting there with clothes on and mentally sound. \add As a result\add*, they became afraid \add because they thought that he might destroy more of their property\add*. (OR, \add they realized that Jesus must be very powerful\add*.)
\v 16 The people who had seen what had happened described what had happened to the man whom the evil spirits \add previously\add* controlled. They also described \add what had happened to\add* the pigs.
\v 17 Then the people pleaded with Jesus to leave their region.
\p
\v 18 As Jesus got in the boat \add in order to leave\add*, the man whom the evil spirits \add previously\add* controlled begged Jesus, “\add Please let me\add* go with you!”
\v 19 But Jesus did not let him \add go with him\add*. On the contrary, he said to him, “Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord \add God\add* has done for you, and tell them how \add God\add* was kind to you.”
\v 20 So the man left \add and traveled around\add* the Ten Towns \add district\add*. He told people how much Jesus had done for him. All the people \add who heard what the man said\add* were amazed.
\s1 Jesus cured a woman who had been suffering from hemorrhaging and brought Jairus' daughter back to life.
\sr Mark 5:21-43
\p
\v 21 Jesus \add and his disciples\add* went in a boat back around Lake \add Galilee\add* to where they were before. When they arrived at the shore of the lake, a large crowd gathered around Jesus.
\v 22 One of the men who presided over a ◄synagogue/Jewish meeting place►, whose name was Jairus, came there. When he saw Jesus, he prostrated himself at his feet.
\v 23 Then he pleaded with Jesus earnestly, “My twelve-year old daughter is \add sick and\add* nearly dead! \add Please\add* come \add to my house\add* and place your hands on her in order that she will be healed {to heal her}, so that she will not die!”
\v 24 So Jesus \add and the disciples\add* went with him.
\p A large crowd followed \add Jesus\add* and \add many\add* pushed close to him.
\v 25 There was a woman \add in the crowd\add* who had vaginal bleeding [EUP] \add every day\add* for twelve years.
\v 26 She had suffered much while many doctors \add treated her\add*. But although she had spent all \add her money\add* to pay the doctors, she had not been helped {they had not helped her}. Instead, she had become worse [EUP].
\v 27 After she heard that Jesus \add healed people\add*, she came \add to where he was and pushed\add* in the crowd \add close\add* behind Jesus.
\v 28 She did that because she was thinking, “If I \add touch him or\add* even if I touch his clothes, I will be healed {his power will heal me}.” So she touched Jesus' clothes.
\v 29 At once her bleeding stopped. At the same time, she sensed that she had been cured of {that \add he\add* had cured} her illness. \v 30 Jesus \add also\add* immediately sensed that his power had healed someone. So he turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”
\v 31 \add One of\add* his disciples replied, “You can see that many people are crowding close to you! \add Probably many people touched you\add* So ◄why do you ask Who touched me?\add /We are surprised\add* that you ask Who touched me? [RHQ]►”
\v 32 But Jesus kept looking around in order to see the one who had done it.
\v 33 The woman was very afraid and trembling. \add She thought that Jesus might be angry because she had violated the law that women who had such a\add* sickness \add should not touch other people. But\add* she knew \add that Jesus had healed her\add*. So she prostrated herself before him. Then she told him truthfully \add about what she had done\add*.
\v 34 He said to her, “◄Ma'am/Young lady►, because you have believed \add that I could heal you \add*, I \bd have\bd* healed you. You may go home with peace \add in your heart \add*, \add because I promise that \add* you will not be sick \add this way anymore \add*.” \p \v 35 While Jesus was still speaking \add to that woman\add*, some people arrived who had come from Jairus' house. They said \add to Jairus\add*, “Your daughter has \add now\add* died. So ◄it is useless that you bother the teacher any longer \add by urging him to go to your house\add*!/why do you bother the teacher any longer \add by urging him to go to your house\add*?► [RHQ]”
\v 36 But when Jesus heard what these men said, he said to Jairus, “Do not think that the situation is hopeless! Just keep believing \add that she will live!\add*”
\v 37-38 Then he allowed only \add his three closest disciples\add*, Peter, James, and John, to go with him \add to Jairus' house\add*. He did not allow any other people to go with him. After they arrived near the house, Jesus saw that the people there were in turmoil. They were weeping and wailing [DOU] loudly.
\v 39 He entered the house and then he said to them, knowing that \add he was going to cause her to live again\add*, “◄Do not make such a disturbance!/Why are you making such a disturbance?► [RHQ] Stop crying, for the child is not dead! On the contrary, she is \add only\add* sleeping [HYP, EUP]!”
\v 40 The people laughed at him, \add because they knew that she was dead\add*. But he sent all the other people outside the house. Then he took the child's father and mother and the \add three disciples\add* who were with him. He went into \add the room\add* where the child was \add lying\add*.
\v 41 He took hold of the child's hand and said to her \add in her own language\add*, “Talitha, Koum!” That means, “Little girl, get up!”
\v 42 At once the girl got up and walked around. (\add It was not surprising that she could walk\add*, because she was twelve years old.) \add When this happened, all who were present\add* were very astonished.
\v 43 Jesus ordered them strictly, “Do not tell anyone about \add what I have done!\add*” Afterwards he told them that something to eat should be brought to the girl {that they should bring the girl something to eat}. \c 6
\s1 Jesus taught in the synagogue, and the people who heard him were amazed and offended.
\sr Mark 6:1-6a

\v 1 Jesus left \add Capernaum city and went to his hometown, Nazareth\add*. His disciples went with him.
\v 2 ◄On the Sabbath/On the Jewish rest day►, \add he entered\add* the Jewish worship house and taught \add the people\add*. Many who were listening to him were astonished. \add But some\add* were saying, “\add This man is just an ordinary person like we are! So\add* ◄\add we cannot believe that\add* this man \add is able to teach us\add* about these things and that he has been made very wise {that \add God\add* has made him very wise} and that he is performing such miracles!\add /how is it that\add* [RHQ] this man \add is able to teach us\add* about these things and that he has been made very wise {that \add God\add* has made him very wise} and that he is performing such miracles?► [RHQ]
\v 3 ◄\add We know that\add* he is \add just an ordinary\add* carpenter!/Isn't he \add just an ordinary\add* carpenter [RHQ]?► \add We know him and his family! We know\add* Mary his mother! ◄\add We know\add* his \add younger\add* brothers James, Joses, Judas and Simon!/Are not his \add younger\add* brothers James, Joses, Judas and Simon?► [RHQ] And ◄his \add younger\add* sisters also live here in this town!/do not his \add younger\add* sisters also live here in this town?► [RHQ]” So they despised him. \v 4 Jesus \add knew that they refused to believe in him\add*. So he said to them, “\add It is certainly true that\add* people honor \add me and other\add* prophets \add in other places, but\add* not in our hometowns! Even our relatives and the people who live in our own houses do not honor us!”

\v 5 \add So\add*, although he healed a few sick people there by touching them, he \add decided\add* not to perform many \add other\add* miracles \add in Nazareth\add* because the people there did not believe that he was the Messiah.
\v 6 He was amazed that they did not believe \add in him\add*.
\s1 Jesus began to send out his disciples two-by-two and gave them power and instructions.
\sr Mark 6:6b-13
\p Jesus \add and his disciples\add* went from town to town \add in that region\add* teaching \add the people\add*.
\v 7 \add One day\add* he summoned the twelve \add disciples\add*, and then he \add told them that\add* he was going to send them out two-by-two \add to teach people in various towns\add*. He gave them power \add to expel\add* evil spirits \add from people\add*.
\v 8-9 He also instructed them to wear sandals and to take along a walking stick when they were traveling. He told them not to take food, nor a bag \add in which travelers carry supplies\add*, nor any money for their journey. He also did not allow them to take extra clothing. \add He wanted the people who heard their message to give them what they needed\add*.
\v 10 He also instructed them, “After you enter a town, \add if someone invites you to stay in his house\add*, go into his house. Eat and sleep in that same home until you leave that town.
\v 11 Wherever the people do not welcome you and wherever the people do not listen to you, shake off the dust from your feet as you leave \add that place\add*. By doing that, you will warn them \add that God will punish them for rejecting your message\add*.”
\v 12 \add So\add* after the disciples went out \add to various towns\add*, they were preaching that people should stop their sinful behavior.
\v 13 They were also expelling many evil spirits \add from people\add*, and they were anointing many sick people with \add olive\add* oil and healing them.
\s1 King Herod heard about Jesus and wondered if he was John the Baptizer, come back after King Herod had ordered him to be executed due to the insistence of his wife, Herodias.
\sr Mark 6:14-29
\p \v 14 \add King\add* Herod \add Antipas\add* heard about \add what\add* Jesus \add was doing\add*, because many people were talking \add about it\add*. \add Some\add* people were saying \add about Jesus\add*, “\add He must be\add* John the Baptizer! He has risen from the dead! That is why he \add has God's\add* power to perform these miracles!”
\v 15 Others were saying \add about Jesus\add*, “He is \add the former prophet\add* Elijah, \add whom God promised to send back again\add*.” Others were saying \add about Jesus\add*, “\add No\add*, he is a \add different\add* prophet, like one of the \add other\add* prophets \add who lived long ago\add*.”
\v 16 Having heard \add what the people were saying, King\add* Herod \add Antipas\add* himself repeatedly said, “The man \add performing those miracles\add* must be John! I \add commanded my soldiers to\add* cut off his head, but he has come back to life again \add to get revenge for my killing him\add*!” \v 17 The reason \add King Herod concluded that John wanted revenge is as follows: Some time before this\add*, Herod married Herodias, while she was \add still\add* the wife of his \add younger\add* brother, Philip.
\v 18 John kept telling Herod, “\add God's\add* law does not permit you to marry the wife of your brother \add while he is still alive\add*.” Then, because Herodias \add urged him to put John in prison\add*, Herod himself sent \add soldiers to John\add*. They seized John and put him in prison.
\v 19 But because Herodias wanted to get \add further\add* revenge on John, she wanted \add someone\add* to execute him. But she could not do that because \add while John was in prison\add*, Herod kept John safe \add from her\add*.
\v 20 Herod did this because he respected/feared John, because he knew that he was a righteous and holy man. The king did not know what he should do, but he liked to listen to him.
\v 21 But \add Herodias was able to have someone execute John when they honored/celebrated\add* the day when Herod was born. On that day, he invited the \add most important\add* government officials, the \add most important\add* army leaders, and the most important men in Galilee \add district\add* in order that they might eat \add and celebrate with him\add*.
\v 22 \add While they were eating\add*, Herodias' daughter came into the room and danced, and that pleased \add King\add* Herod and his guests. So the king said to her, “Ask me for whatever you desire and I will give it to you!”
\v 23 He said to her, “Whatever you ask, I will give it to you! I will give you up to half of what I own and rule, if you ask for it. May God punish me \add if I do not do what I have promised\add*!”
\v 24 The girl immediately left the room and went to her mother. She \add told her what the king had said, and\add* asked her, “What shall I ask for?” Her mother replied, “\add Ask the king to give you\add* the head of John the Baptizer!”
\v 25 The girl quickly entered the room again. She went to the king and she requested, “I want you to command someone to \add cut off\add* the head of John the Baptizer \add and\add* give it to me at once on a platter, \add so that my mother can know he is dead\add*!”
\v 26 The king became very distressed \add when he heard what she asked for\add* because he knew John was a very righteous man (OR, because he now knew that he should not have made that promise to her). But he could not refuse \add what she requested because\add* he had promised \add that he would give her anything she asked for\add*, and because his guests \add had heard him promise that\add*.
\v 27 So the king at once ordered the man who executes prisoners to go and \add cut off\add* John's head and bring it \add to the girl\add*. That man went to the prison and cut off John's head.
\v 28 He \add put it on\add* a platter, brought it back, and gave it to the girl. The girl took it to her mother.
\v 29 After John's disciples heard \add what happened\add*, they went \add to the prison\add* and took John's body and then they buried \add it in a burial cave\add*.
\s1 The apostles returned to Jesus to report what they had done. Then they all went off to a lonely place, but many people followed them.
\sr Mark 6:30-34

\v 30 The \add twelve\add* apostles returned to Jesus \add from the places to which they had gone\add*. They reported to him what they had done and what they had taught \add to people\add*.
\v 31 He said to them, “Come \add with me\add* to a place where no people are living, in order that we can be alone and rest a little while!” \add He said this\add* because many people were continually coming to them and going \add away again\add*, with the result that \add Jesus and\add* his disciples did not have time to eat \add or do anything else\add*.
\v 32 So they went away by themselves in a boat to a place where no people were living.
\v 33 \add But many\add* people saw them leaving. They also recognized \add that they were Jesus and the disciples, and they saw where they were going\add*. So they ran \add ahead on land\add* from all the \add nearby\add* towns to the place \add where Jesus and his disciples were going\add*. They \add actually\add* arrived there before \add Jesus and the disciples\add*.
\v 34 As Jesus \add and his disciples\add* got out of the boat, Jesus saw this large crowd. He felt sorry for them because they were \add confused\add*, like sheep that do not have a shepherd. So he taught them many things.
\s1 When it became late in the afternoon the people became hungry and there was no place to obtain food; as a result, Jesus miraculously provided food for them.
\sr Mark 6:35-44
\p \v 35 Late \add in the afternoon\add* the disciples came to him and said, “This is a place where no people live and it is very late.
\v 36 \add So \add* send the people away in order that they may go to the surrounding farms and villages in order that they can buy for themselves something to eat!”
\v 37 But he replied, “\add No\add*, you \add yourselves\add* give them something to eat!” They replied to him, “◄We could not buy enough bread to feed \add this crowd\add*, even if we had as much money as a man earns by working 200 days!/How could we buy enough bread to feed \add this mob\add*, even if we had as much money as a man earns by working 200 days?►” [RHQ] \v 38 But he replied to them, “How many loaves of bread do you have? Go and find out!” They \add went and\add* found out and then they told him, “We have \add only\add* five flat loaves and two \add cooked\add* fish!”
\v 39 He instructed \add the disciples to tell\add* all the people to sit down on the green grass.
\v 40 So the people sat in groups. There were 50 people in some groups and 100 people in other groups.
\v 41 Jesus took the five flat loaves and the two fish. He looked up towards heaven and thanked \add God\add* for them. Then he broke the loaves and fish into pieces and kept giving them to the disciples in order that they would distribute them to the people.
\v 42 Everyone ate \add this food\add* until they all had enough to eat!
\v 43 The disciples then collected twelve baskets full of pieces \add of bread\add* and of the fish \add that were left over\add*.
\v 44 There were approximately five thousand men who ate the bread \add and fish. They did not even count the women and children\add*.
\s1 Jesus sent his disciples ahead of him to Bethsaida by boat while he stayed to pray. Later he saw that they were in difficulty due to a wind blowing against them so he went to them, walking on the water.
\sr Mark 6:45-52

\v 45 Right away Jesus told his disciples to get into the boat and then go ahead of him to Bethsaida \add town, which was\add* further around \add Lake Galilee. He stayed and\add* dismissed the many people who were there.
\v 46 After he said goodbye to the people, he went up into the hills in order to pray.
\v 47 When it was evening, the \add disciples'\add* boat was in the middle of the lake and Jesus was by himself on the land.
\v 48 He saw that the wind was \add blowing\add* against them as they rowed. As a result, they were having great difficulty. He approached them early in the morning, when it was still dark, by walking on the water. He intended to walk by them.
\v 49 They saw him walking on the water, but they thought that he was a ghost. They screamed
\v 50 because they all were terrified when they saw him. But he talked to them. He said to them, “Be calm! Do not be afraid, \add because\add* it is I!”
\v 51 He got into the boat \add and sat down\add* with them and the wind stopped blowing. They were completely amazed \add about what he had done\add*.
\v 52 \add Although they had seen Jesus multiply\add* the \add bread and the fish\add*, they did not understand \add from that how powerful he was, as they should have\add*. They did not think clearly about it.
\s1 As soon as Jesus and his disciples reached land and disembarked, people began to come to Jesus, bringing sick people in order that he might heal them, and he healed all who touched him.
\sr Mark 6:53-56

\v 53 After they went further around \add Lake Galilee in a boat, they came to the shore at Gennesaret town\add*. Then they tied up the boat there. \v 54 As soon as they got out of the boat, \add the people there\add* recognized Jesus.
\v 55 So they ran throughout the whole district \add in order to tell others that Jesus was there\add*. Then the people \add placed\add* those who were sick on stretchers and carried them to any place where they heard \add people say\add* that Jesus was.
\v 56 In whatever village, town or other place where he entered, they would bring to the marketplaces those who were sick. Then the \add sick people\add* would beg Jesus to let them touch \add him or\add* even the edge of his clothes \add in order that Jesus might heal them\add*. All those who touched \add him or his robe\add* were healed.

\s1 Some Pharisees and scribes criticized Jesus about his disciples disobeying the traditions of the elders. Jesus replied, showing that their attitudes and practices were mistaken.
\sr Mark 7:1-23
\p
\v 1 \add One day some\add* Pharisees and some men who teach the \add Jewish\add* laws gathered around Jesus. They had come from Jerusalem \add to investigate him\add*.
\v 2-4 The Pharisees and all of the \add other\add* Jews \add strictly\add* observe their traditions that their ancestors \add taught. For example, they refuse to\add* eat until they first wash their hands \add with a special ritual\add*, especially after they \add return\add* from \add buying things in\add* the marketplace. \add They think that God will be angry with them if they do not do that, because some person or thing unacceptable to God might have touched\add* ◄\add them/the things they bought\add*►. There are many other such \add traditions\add* that they accept and try to obey. Specifically, they wash \add in a special way\add* their cups, pots, kettles, containers, and beds \add in order that using these things will not make God reject them\add*.
\p
\v 5 That day, those Pharisees and men who taught the \add Jewish\add* laws saw that some of his disciples were eating food with hands that they had not washed \add using the special ritual\add*. So they questioned Jesus, saying, “\add Your\add* disciples disobey the traditions of our ancestors! ◄You should not \add let them\add* eat food if they have not washed their hands \add using our special ritual\add*!/Why do you \add let them\add* eat food if they have not washed their hands \add using our special ritual\add*?► [RHQ]”
\v 6 Jesus said to them, “Isaiah \add rebuked your ancestors\add*, and his words describe very well you people who only pretend to be good! He wrote these words \add that God said\add*:
\q These people speak \add as if they\add* honor me, but they [SYN] really do not think about honoring me at all.
\v 7 It is useless for them to worship me, because they teach only what people have commanded \add as if I myself had commanded them\add*.
\p
\v 8 You, \add like your ancestors\add*, refuse \add to do\add* what God has commanded. Instead, you follow only the traditions that ◄others/your ancestors► have \add taught\add*.”
\v 9 Jesus also said to them, “\add You think\add* [IRO] that you are clever in refusing to do what God commanded just so that you can obey your own traditions!
\v 10 \add For example, our ancestor\add* Moses \add wrote God's\add* command, Honor your fathers and your mothers. He also wrote, \add The authorities must\add* execute a person who speaks evil about his father or mother.
\v 11-12 But you \add teach people that it is all right that people no longer must help their parents. You teach people that it is all right if people\add* give their things to God \add instead of giving them to their parents\add*. You allow them to say to their parents, What I was going to give to you \add to provide for you, I have now promised to\add* give to God. So I \add cannot any longer help you!\add* As a result, you are \add actually telling people\add* that they no longer have to help their parents!
\v 13 And, by doing that, you disregard what God commanded! You teach your own traditions to others \add and tell them strongly that they should obey them\add* And you do many other things like that.”
\p
\v 14 Then Jesus again summoned the crowd \add to come closer. Then\add* he said to them \add figuratively\add*, “All of you people listen to me! \add Try to\add* understand [DOU] \add what I am about to tell you\add*.
\v 15-16 Nothing that people eat causes \add God to\add* consider them to be unacceptable. On the contrary, it is that which comes from people's ◄inner beings/hearts► that causes God to reject them.”
\p
\v 17 After Jesus had left the crowd and then entered a house with the disciples, they asked him about the parable \add that he had just spoken\add*.
\v 18 He replied, “◄\add I am disappointed that\add* you also do not understand \add what it means!\add*/Why can you not understand \add what it means\add*?► [RHQ] ◄You ought to understand that nothing that \add enters us from\add* outside can cause \add God to\add* consider us unacceptable to him./Can you not understand that nothing that \add enters us from\add* outside of us can cause \add God to\add* consider us unacceptable to him?► [RHQ] \v 19 Instead of entering \add and ruining\add* our minds/souls, it goes into our stomachs, and afterwards the refuse passes out \add of our bodies\add*.” By saying this, Jesus was declaring that people \add can eat\add* any food without causing \add God\add* to reject them.
\v 20 He also said, “It is the \add thoughts and actions\add* that come from within people that cause \add God\add* to consider them unacceptable to him.
\v 21 Specifically, it is people's innermost being \add that causes them to\add* think things that are evil; they act immorally, they steal \add things\add*, they commit murder.
\v 22 They \add commit\add* adultery, they are greedy, they \add act\add* maliciously, they deceive \add people\add*. They \add act\add* indecently, they envy \add people\add*, they speak evil about others, they are proud, and they \add act\add* foolishly.
\v 23 People think \add these thoughts\add* and then they do these evil actions, and that is what causes \add God to\add* consider them unacceptable to him.”
\s1 Jesus went to the region around Tyre to be away from people, but they learned of it and a woman came to ask him to expel an evil spirit from her daughter.
\sr Mark 7:24-30
\p
\v 24 After Jesus \add and his disciples\add* left \add Galilee district\add*, they went to the region around Tyre \add city\add*. While he stayed at a certain house, he desired that no one know \add it\add*, but people soon found out \add that he was there\add*.
\v 25 A certain woman, whose daughter had an evil spirit \add within her\add*, heard about Jesus. At once she came to him and prostrated herself at his feet.
\v 26 This woman \add was not a Jew. Her ancestors came\add* from Greece \add country\add*, but she was born in \add the region around\add* Phoenicia \add town\add* in Syria district. She pleaded with Jesus that he expel the evil spirit from her daughter.
\v 27 But he \add wanted to see how strongly she believed in him. So, suggesting that he should help the Jews first and not the non-Jews whom some Jews called dogs\add* [MET], \add he\add* spoke to her saying, “First let the children eat all they want, because it is not good for someone to take the food \add the mother has prepared\add* for the children and then throw it to the \add little\add* dogs.”
\v 28 But \add to show that she believed that non-Jews could also receive help from God\add* [MET], she replied to him, “Sir, \add what you say is\add* correct, but even the \add little\add* dogs, which lie under the table, eat the crumbs that the children \add drop\add*.”
\v 29 \add Jesus\add* said to her, “Because of what you have said, \add you have shown me that you believe in what I can do for you\add*. So I will help you. Now you may go \add home, because I have caused\add* the evil spirit to leave your daughter.”
\v 30 The woman returned to her house and saw that her child was lying \add quietly\add* on the bed and that the evil spirit had left.
\s1 When Jesus went back to Lake Galilee, some people brought a deaf-mute man to Jesus and asked him to heal the man, which he did.
\sr Mark 7:31-37
\p
\v 31 Jesus \add and his disciples\add* left the region around Tyre \add city\add* and went \add north\add* through Sidon \add city\add*, then \add toward the east\add* through the district of the Ten Towns, and then \add south\add* to \add the towns near\add* Lake Galilee.
\v 32 \add There\add*, people brought to him a man who was deaf and who could hardly talk. They begged \add Jesus\add* to lay his hands on him \add in order to heal him\add*.
\v 33 \add So Jesus\add* took him away from the crowd \add in order that the two of them could be\add* alone. Then he put \add one of\add* his fingers into \add each of\add* the man's ears. After he spat \add on his fingers\add*, he touched the man's tongue \add with his fingers\add*.
\v 34 Then he looked up toward heaven, he sighed \add because he was concerned for the man\add*, and then \add in his own language\add* he said to the man's \add ears\add*, “Ephphatha”, which means, “Be opened {Open up}!”.
\v 35 At once the man could hear plainly [MTY]. He also began to speak clearly because \add what was causing him to be unable to speak\add* was healed {Jesus healed \add what was causing him to be unable to speak\add*}.
\v 36 Jesus told ◄\add the people/his friends\add*► not to tell anyone \add what he had done\add*. But, although he ordered them \add and others\add* repeatedly \add not to tell anyone about it\add*, they kept talking about it very much.
\v 37 \add People who heard about it\add* were utterly amazed and were saying \add enthusiastically\add*, “Everything he has done is wonderful! \add Besides doing other amazing things\add*, he enables deaf people to hear! And he enables those who cannot speak to speak!”
\c 8
\s1 Again Jesus provided food miraculously for a great crowd who gathered to hear him and became hungry.
\sr Mark 8:1-10
\p
\v 1 During those days, a large crowd of people gathered again. \add After they had been there a couple days\add*, they had no food to eat. So Jesus summoned the disciples \add to come closer\add* and then he said to them,
\v 2 “This is the third day that these people have been with me, and they have nothing \add left\add* to eat, so now I feel very sorry for them.
\v 3 Furthermore, if I send them home \add while they are still\add* hungry, \add some of\add* them will faint on the way home, because some of them have come from far away.”
\v 4 \add Knowing that he was suggesting that they give the people something to eat, one of\add* his disciples replied, “◄We cannot possibly find food to satisfy this crowd, here in this place where no people live!/How can we find food to satisfy this crowd, here in this place where no people live?►” [RHQ]
\v 5 Jesus asked them, “How many loaves of bread do you have?” They replied, “\add We have\add* seven \add flat loaves\add*.”
\v 6 Jesus commanded the crowd, “Sit down on the ground!” \add After they sat down\add*, he took the seven loaves, he thanked \add God for them\add*, he broke them \add into pieces\add* and started giving them to his disciples in order that they might distribute them \add to the people\add*.
\v 7 \add They found that\add* they \add also\add* had a few small \add dried\add* fish. So after he thanked God for these, he told the disciples, “Distribute these also.” \add After they distributed the bread and fish to the crowd\add*,
\v 8 the people ate this food and they had plenty \add to\add* satisfy \add them\add*. \add The disciples\add* collected the pieces of food that were left over. \add They filled\add* seven large baskets full of those pieces.
\v 9 \add They estimated that\add* there were about four thousand people \add who ate on that day\add*.
\v 10 Jesus dismissed the crowd. Immediately after that, he got into the boat along with his disciples, and they went \add around Lake Galilee\add* to Dalmanutha district.
\s1 Jesus rebuked those who insisted on him performing more miracles, and rebuked the disciples when they worried about not having enough food with them.
\sr Mark 8:11-21
\p
\v 11 \add In those days some\add* Pharisees came to Jesus. They asked him \add to perform\add* a miracle \add that would show that\add* God \add had sent him\add*. They wanted to \add find a way by which they could\add* convince the people to reject him. \add So\add* they started to argue with him.
\v 12 Jesus sighed deeply within himself, and then he said, “I am disgusted that [RHQ], \add even though\add* you people have seen how I \add have healed people\add*, you keep asking me to perform miracles! Note this: Such a miracle will certainly not be shown {I will certainly not show such a miracle} \add just\add* for you people!”
\v 13 Then he left them.
\p He got into the boat again, along \add with his disciples\add*, and they went further around \add Lake Galilee\add*.
\v 14 The disciples had forgotten to bring along \add enough\add* food. Specifically, they had only one flat loaf of bread with them in the boat.
\v 15 \add As they were going\add*, Jesus warned them against \add the attitudes the Pharisees and Herod Antipas had, attitudes that were having a bad effect on other people. He did this by telling them a parable\add*. He said, “Be careful! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod!”
\v 16 \add The disciples misunderstood him\add*. So they said to one another, “\add He must have said that\add* because we have no bread.”
\v 17 Jesus knew \add what they were discussing among themselves\add*. So he said to them, “◄\add I am disappointed that you are\add* discussing about your not having enough bread!/Why are you discussing about your not having enough bread?► [RHQ] ◄You should understand by now \add that I can provide miraculously for you if you need food!\add*/Why do you not yet perceive or understand \add that I can provide miraculously for you if you need food\add*?► [RHQ] ◄You are not thinking!/Why are you not thinking?► [RHQ]
\v 18 ◄I am also disappointed that, although you have eyes, you do not \add understand what you\add* see!/Why is it that, although you have eyes, you do not \add understand what you\add* see?► [RHQ] You have ears, but you do not understand \add what I say\add* [RHQ]!” \add Then he asked\add*, “Do you not remember \add what happened\add*
\v 19 when I broke \add only\add* five loaves \add and fed\add* the five thousand people [RHQ]? \add Not only was everyone satisfied, but there was food left over\add* How many baskets full of pieces of bread \add that were left over\add* did you collect?” They replied, “We collected twelve baskets full.”
\v 20 Then he asked, “When I broke the seven loaves in order to \add feed\add* the four thousand people, \add again when everyone had plenty to eat\add*, how many large baskets \add of pieces of bread that were left over\add* did you collect?” They replied, “\add We collected\add* seven \add large baskets full\add*.”
\v 21 Then he kept saying to them, “◄\add I am disappointed that\add* you do not understand yet \add that you should never worry that you do not have enough food\add*!/Why do you not understand yet \add that you should never worry that you do not have enough food\add*?►” [RHQ]
\s1 Jesus healed a blind man.
\sr Mark 8:22-26
\p
\v 22 They arrived \add in the boat\add* at Bethsaida \add town\add*. People brought to Jesus a blind man and earnestly requested that Jesus touch him \add in order to heal him\add*.
\v 23 Jesus took the hand of the blind man, led him outside the town, he put his saliva on the man's eyes, he put his hands on the man, and then he asked him, “Do you see anything?”
\v 24 The man looked up and then he said, “\add Yes\add*, I see people! They are walking around, but I cannot see them \add clearly\add*. They look like trees!”
\v 25 Then Jesus again touched the eyes of the blind man. The man looked intently and at that moment he was completely healed! He could see everything clearly.
\v 26 Jesus said to him, “Do not go into the town! \add First go straight home and tell the people there about what I did\add*!” Then he sent the man to his home.
\s1 On the way to the villages near the city of Caesarea Philippi, Jesus asked his disciples what people were saying about who he was and, then, what they thought.
\sr Mark 8:27-30
\p
\v 27 Jesus and the disciples \add left Bethsaida town and went to the villages near Caesarea Philippi town\add*. On the way he questioned them, “Who do people say that I \add really\add* am?”
\v 28 They replied, “\add Some people say\add* that you are John the Baptizer, \add who has come back to life again\add*. Others say \add that you are the prophet\add* Elijah \add who has returned from heaven as God promised\add*. And others say that you are one of the \add other former\add* prophets \add who has come back to life again\add*.”
\v 29 He asked them, “What about you? Who do you say that I am?” Peter replied to him, “\add We believe that\add* you are the Messiah!”
\v 30 Then Jesus warned them strongly that they should not tell anyone \add yet that he was the Messiah\add*.
\s1 Jesus spoke plainly to his disciples about his coming death and resurrection.
\sr Mark 8:31-33
\p
\v 31 Then Jesus began to teach them, “\add Even though\add* I am the one who came from heaven, it is necessary that I suffer very much. It is also necessary that I be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the men who teach the \add Jewish\add* laws {that the elders, the chief priests, and the men who teach the \add Jewish\add* laws reject me}, and that I be killed {they kill me}. But on the third day \add after I am killed I\add* will become alive again.”
\v 32 He said this to them clearly. But Peter took Jesus aside and then, \add because he assumed that the Messiah would never die\add*, he started to rebuke Jesus \add for talking about dying\add*.
\v 33 Jesus turned around and looked at his disciples. Then he rebuked Peter, saying, “Stop thinking like that! Satan \add is causing you to talk like that! Instead\add* of wanting what God wants \add me to do, you are wanting\add* me to do \add only\add* what \add most\add* people \add would want me to do\add*.”
\s1 Jesus explained to the crowd and his disciples what is required if anyone wants to be Jesus' disciple.
\sr Mark 8:34—9:1
\p
\v 34 Then he summoned the crowd along with his disciples \add so that they might listen to him\add*. He told them, “If any one \add of you\add* wants to be my disciple, you must not do \add only\add* what you yourself want to do. Specifically, you must \add be willing to allow people to hurt you and to disgrace you. That is what they do to criminals\add* who are forced to carry crosses [MET] \add to the places where they will be crucified\add*. That is what anyone who wants to be my disciple must do.
\v 35 \add You must do that\add*, because those who try to save their lives \add by denying that they belong to me when people want to kill them for believing in me\add* will not live \add eternally\add*, but those who are killed because of being my \add disciples\add* and \add because of telling others my\add* good message will live \add forever with me\add*.
\v 36 People might get everything \add they want\add* in this world, but ◄they are really gaining nothing if they do not get eternal life \add because they do not become my disciples!\add*/what will they gain if they do not get eternal life \add because they do not become my disciples\add*?► [RHQ]
\v 37 ◄\add Think carefully about the fact that\add* there is absolutely nothing that people can give \add to God\add* that would enable them to gain eternal life!/Is there anything that a person can give \add to God\add* in order to gain eternal life?► [RHQ]
\v 38 And think about this: Those who refuse \add to say that they belong to\add* me and who reject what I say in these days when many people have turned away \add from God\add* and are very sinful, I, the one who came from heaven, will also refuse \add to say that they belong to me\add* when I come back with the holy angels and have the glorious brightness that my Father has!”

\v 1 He also said to \add his disciples\add*, “Listen carefully! Some of you who are here now will see God ruling powerfully in \add many ways\add*. You will see it before you die!”
\s1 Jesus took Peter, James and John up a high mountain where his appearance changed and Moses and Elijah appeared and talked to Jesus.
\sr Mark 9:2-8
\p
\v 2 A week later Jesus took Peter, James and \add James' younger brother\add* John and led them up a high mountain. \add While they were\add* alone up there, he appeared very different to them.
\v 3 His clothes became dazzling white. They were whiter than anyone on earth could make them by bleaching them.
\v 4 \add Two prophets who had lived long ago\add*, Moses and Elijah, appeared to them. Then the two of them began talking with Jesus.
\v 5 \add After a short time\add*, Peter \add interrupted by\add* exclaiming, “Teacher, it is wonderful to be here! So allow us to make three shelters. One \add will be\add* for you, one \add will be\add* for Moses, and one \add will be\add* for Elijah!”
\v 6 \add He said this\add* because \add he wanted to say something, but\add* he did not know what to say, because he and the other \add two disciples\add* were very awestruck.
\v 7 Then a \add shining\add* cloud appeared that covered them. \add God\add* [EUP] spoke to them from the cloud saying, “This is my Son. I love him. \add Therefore\add*, listen to him!” \v 8 When \add the three disciples\add* looked around, they saw that suddenly Jesus was alone with them, and that there was no longer anyone \add else\add* there.
\s1 Jesus told them that the one like Elijah has already come and been evilly treated, but that the Messiah would also be evilly treated.
\sr Mark 9:9-13
\p
\v 9 While they were coming down the mountain, Jesus told them that they should not tell anyone \add yet\add* what had just happened to him. He said, “You may tell them after I, the one who came from heaven, ◄rise from the dead/become alive again► after I die.”
\v 10 So they did not tell others about it \add for a long time\add*. But they discussed among themselves what it meant when he said that he would ◄rise from the dead/become alive again► after he died.
\p
\v 11 \add The three disciples had just seen Elijah, but Elijah had not done anything to prepare people to accept Jesus. So\add* they asked Jesus, “The men who teach the \add Jewish\add* laws say that Elijah must come back to the earth before \add the Messiah comes to earth. But you have been here a long time and Elijah came just today. So is what they are teaching wrong?\add*”
\v 12-13 \add Jesus wanted them to know that John the Baptizer was the one who represented Elijah. So\add* he answered them, “It is true that \add God promised to send Elijah to come\add* first \add so that people would be ready when I came\add*. Elijah's representative has already come, and our leaders treated him very badly, just like they wanted to do, just like it was prophesied {\add the prophets\add* prophesied} long ago. But, ◄I also want you to consider what is written {what \add the prophets\add* wrote} in the Scriptures about me, the one who came from heaven./why have you not thought about what is written {what \add the prophets\add* wrote} about me, the one who came from heaven?► [RHQ] It is written {They wrote} that I would suffer much and that I would be rejected {that \add many people\add* would reject me}.”
\s1 Jesus expelled an evil spirit and later explained to the disciples why they had failed to do that.
\sr Mark 9:14-29
\p
\v 14 \add Jesus and those three disciples\add* returned to where the \add other\add* disciples were. They saw a large crowd around the other disciples and \add some\add* men who taught the \add Jewish\add* laws arguing with them.
\v 15 As soon as the crowd saw Jesus, they were very surprised \add to see him come\add*. So they ran to him and greeted him.
\v 16 He asked them, “What are you arguing about?”
\v 17 A man in the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought my son \add here in order that\add* you \add would heal him\add*. There is an evil spirit in him \add that makes him\add* unable to talk.
\v 18 Whenever the spirit attacks him, it throws him down. He foams at the mouth, he grinds his teeth together, and he becomes stiff. I asked your disciples to expel the spirit, but they were not able to do it.”
\v 19 Jesus replied by saying to those people, “◄I am very disappointed that \add although you\add* have observed how I help people, you do not believe \add that you are able to do anything\add*!/Why is it that \add although you\add* have observed how I help people, you do not believe \add that you are able to do anything\add*?► [RHQ] ◄I have been with you a long time, \add and you still cannot do what I do\add*!/How long do I have to be with you \add before you can do what I do\add*?► [RHQ] Bring the boy to me!”
\v 20 So they brought the boy to Jesus. As soon as the evil spirit saw Jesus, it shook the boy severely, and \add the boy\add* fell on the ground. He rolled around, and he foamed at the mouth.
\v 21 Jesus asked the boy's father, “How long has he been like this?” He replied, “\add This started to happen\add* when he was a child.
\v 22 \add The spirit does not only do this\add*, but he also often throws him into the fire or into the water in order to kill him. But, pity us and help us, if you can!”
\v 23 Jesus exclaimed to him, “\add Do not say\add* [RHQ] If you can, for \add God/I\add* can do anything for people who believe \add in him/me\add*!”
\v 24 Immediately the child's father shouted, “I believe \add that you can help me, but I do not believe strongly\add*. Help me to believe more strongly!”
\v 25 Because \add Jesus wanted to heal the boy before\add* the crowd got bigger, he rebuked the evil spirit, saying, “You evil spirit, you who are \add causing this boy to be\add* deaf and unable to talk! I command you to come out of him and never enter him again!”
\v 26 The evil spirit shouted, it shook the boy violently, and then it left the boy. The boy did not move. He seemed like a dead body. So many of the people there said, “He is dead!”
\v 27 However, Jesus took him by the hand and helped him get up. Then the boy stood up. \add He was healed\add*
\v 28 Later, when Jesus and his disciples were alone in a house, one of them asked him, “Why were we not able to expel \add the evil spirit\add*?”
\v 29 He said to them, “You can expel this kind \add of evil spirit\add* only by your praying \add that God will give you the power to do it\add*. There is no other way that you can expel them.”
\s1 Jesus was teaching his disciples that he would be handed over to other men, killed, and become alive again; but they did not understand what he was saying.
\sr Mark 9:30-32
\p
\v 30 After \add Jesus and his disciples \add* left that \add district \add*, they traveled through Galilee \add district \add*. Jesus did not want anyone \add else \add* to know \add that he was in their area \add*; he did not want
\v 31 \add anyone to interrupt him\add* as he taught his disciples. He was telling them, “\add Some day my enemies\add* [SYN] will seize [MTY] me, the one who came from heaven, and I will be put {they will put me} into the hands of \add other\add* men. Those men will kill me. But on the third day after I am killed {after they kill me}, I will become alive again!” \v 32 But they did not understand what he was telling them. Also, they were afraid to ask him about what he had said.
\s1 Jesus taught his disciples by illustration about what kind of person God considers important.
\sr Mark 9:33-37
\p
\v 33 Jesus and his disciples returned to Capernaum \add town\add*. When they were in the house, he asked them, “What were you discussing \add while we were traveling\add* on the road?”
\v 34 But they did not reply. \add They were ashamed to reply\add* because, \add while they were traveling\add*, they had been arguing with each other about which one of them \add would be\add* the most important \add when Jesus became king\add*.
\v 35 He sat down, he summoned the twelve disciples \add to come close to him\add*, and then he said to them, “If anyone wants \add God to consider him\add* to be the most important person of all, he must \add consider himself\add* to be the least important person of all, and he must serve everyone \add else\add*.”
\v 36 Then he took a child and placed him among them. He took the child in his arms and then he said to them,
\v 37 “Those who, \add because they love\add* me, welcome a child like this one, \add God considers that\add* they are welcoming me. So \add it is as though\add* they are also welcoming \add God\add*, who sent me.”
\s1 Jesus taught his disciples about who is for him and who is against him.
\sr Mark 9:38-41
\p
\v 38 John said to Jesus, “Teacher, we saw someone who was expelling demons, ◄\add claiming he had\add* authority from you \add to do that/while telling people\add* that you \add have told him to do it\add*►. So we told him to stop doing it because he was not one of us \add disciples\add*.”
\v 39 Jesus said, “Do not tell him \add not to do that\add*. For no one will speak evilly about me just after he performs a miracle while saying that I \add have told him to do it\add*.
\v 40 Furthermore, those who are not opposing us are trying to \add achieve the same goals that\add* we are.
\v 41 Also think about this: Those \add who belong to me who help you in any way, even\add* if they \add just\add* give you a cup of water to drink because you follow \add me\add*, the Messiah, will certainly be rewarded \add by God\add*!”
\s1 Jesus taught his disciples about sin and its result.
\sr Mark 9:42-48
\p
\v 42 \add Jesus also said\add*, “But if you cause someone who believes in me to sin, \add God will severely punish you\add*, even if that person is \add socially unimportant like\add* this little child. If someone tied a heavy stone around your neck and you were thrown {and threw you} into the sea, \add you would consider that was a severe punishment. But God will punish you more severely\add* than that \add if you cause a person who believes in me to sin\add*.
\v 43-44 \add So\add*, if you are \add wanting to use one of\add* [MTY, PRS] \add your hands to sin, stop using your hand! Even if you have to\add* cut your hand off and throw it away \add to avoid sinning, do it\add* [HYP]! It is good that you not sin and that you live eternally, \add even though you lack one of\add* your hands \add while you are here on earth\add*. But it is not good that you sin and as a result God throws your whole body into hell. There the fires never go out!
\v 45-46 If you are \add wanting to use\add* one of [PRS] your feet to sin, \add stop using your foot! Even if you have to\add* cut off your foot \add to avoid sinning, do it\add* [HYP]! It is good that you not sin and live eternally, \add even though\add* you lack one of your feet \add while you are here on earth\add*. But is not good that you sin and go to hell.
\v 47 If because of what you see [MTY, PRS] you are tempted to sin, \add stop looking at those things\add* Even if you have to gouge out your eye and throw it away [HYP] \add to avoid sinning, do it! It is good that you not sin and live eternally, even though you lack one of\add* your eyes \add while you are here on earth\add*. But it is not good that you sin and, as a result, God puts your whole body in hell.
\v 48 In that place people suffer forever and the fires are never put out {never go out}.”
\s1 Jesus taught that we must endure trials to remain useful to God.
\sr Mark 9:49-50
\p
\v 49 “\add You must endure difficulties in order that God will be pleased with you. Your difficulties are like\add* a fire \add that makes things pure\add* [MET]. \add Your enduring is also like\add* [MET] salt being put \add on\add* {people putting salt on their} \add sacrifices to make them pure\add*.
\v 50 Salt is useful \add to put on food\add*, but you cannot [RHQ] make salt to taste salty again if it becomes flavorless [MET]. Similarly, you must remain useful to God, \add because no one can make you useful to God again if you become useless\add*. You must also live peacefully with each other.”

\s1 Some Pharisees asked him if the law permitted a man to divorce his wife. Jesus answered and supported his answer from Scripture.
\sr Mark 10:1-12
\p
\v 1 Jesus left ◄that place/Capernaum► \add with his disciples\add*, and they went through Judea district and on across \add to the east side of\add* the Jordan \add River\add*. When crowds gathered around him again, he taught them again, as he customarily did.
\v 2 \add While he was teaching them, some\add* Pharisees approached him and asked him, “Does \add our Jewish\add* law permit a man to divorce his wife?” They asked that in order to be able to criticize him \add whether he answered “yes” or “no”\add*.
\v 3 He answered them, “What did Moses command your \add ancestors about a man divorcing his wife\add*?”
\v 4 \add One of\add* them replied, “Moses permitted that a man may write on paper \add his reason\add* for divorcing \add his wife\add*, \add give this paper to her\add*, and then send her away.”
\v 5 Jesus said to them, “It was because your \add ancestors\add* stubbornly wanted just what they desired that Moses wrote that law for \add your ancestors\add*, and you \add are just like them\add*
\v 6 \add Remember\add* that he \add also wrote that, when God\add* first created \add people\add*, he made \add one\add* man, and \add one\add* woman \add to become that man's wife\add*.
\v 7 That explains why \add God said\add*, When a man \add and\add* woman marry, they should no longer live with their fathers and mothers \add after they marry\add*.
\v 8 Instead, the two of them shall \add live together, and they shall\add* become so \add closely united\add* [MET] \add that they are like\add* one person. Therefore, although the people \add who marry\add* were two \add separate persons\add* before, \add God regards them\add* as one person now, \add so he wants them to remain married\add*.
\v 9 Because that is true, a man must not separate from his \add wife\add* whom God has joined \add to him, because God's plan is for them to remain together\add*!”
\p
\v 10 When Jesus and his disciples were alone in a house, they asked him again about this.
\v 11 He said to them, “\add God considers that a marriage lasts until either the husband or the wife dies, so he considers\add* that any man who divorces his wife and marries another woman is committing adultery, \add even\add* if he divorces his first wife.
\v 12 \add God also considers\add* a woman who divorces her first husband to be committing adultery if she marries another man.”
\s1 Jesus became indignant when he saw his disciples scolding people for bringing children for him to bless them.
\sr Mark 10:13-16
\p
\v 13 \add One day\add*, some people were bringing children to Jesus in order that he would touch \add and bless\add* them. But the disciples scolded those people \add because they thought that Jesus\add* ◄\add did not want to be bothered spending time with/was not concerned about\add*► \add children\add*.
\v 14 When Jesus saw that, he became angry. He said to the \add disciples\add*, “Allow the children to come to me! Do not forbid them [DOU]! It is people who \add are humble and trust as they do\add* who can experience ◄God's rule \add in their lives\add*/God taking care of them► [MET].
\v 15 Note this: Those who do not \add trustingly\add* allow God to direct \add their lives\add*, as children \add do\add*, will not enter the place where God rules.”
\v 16 Then he embraced the children. He also put his hands on them \add and asked God to\add* bless them.
\s1 After a man asked Jesus what he should do in order to live eternally, Jesus told him to sell all his possessions, which astonished the disciples.
\sr Mark 10:17-31
\p
\v 17 As Jesus was starting to travel \add again with his disciples\add*, a \add young\add* man ran up to him. He knelt before Jesus and then he asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to have eternal life/in order to live \add with God\add* eternally?”
\v 18 Jesus said to him, “◄You should consider carefully \add what you are implying\add* (OR, \add that you are implying that I am God\add*) \add by\add* calling me good, because only God is good!/Do you realize \add what you are implying\add* (OR, \add that you are implying that I am God\add*) \add by\add* calling me good, because only God is good?► [RHQ] No other person is good
\v 19 \add But to answer your question\add*, you know the commandments \add of Moses, which will cause you to live eternally if you obey them perfectly\add*. He commanded \add things such as\add* do not murder anyone, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not ◄testify falsely/lie►, do not cheat anyone, and honor your father and mother.”
\v 20 The man said to him, “Teacher, I have obeyed all those commandments ever since I was young. \add So is\add* ◄\add that enough/there something else that I have not done\add*►?”
\v 21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. He said to him, “There is one thing that you have not \add yet done\add*. You must go \add home\add*, sell all that you possess, and then give \add the money\add* to poor people. \add As a result\add*, you will be spiritually rich in heaven. After \add you have done what I have told you\add*, come with me \add and be my disciple\add*!”
\v 22 The man became disappointed when he heard that. He went away sad, because he was very rich \add and he did not want to give away everything\add*.
\v 23 Jesus looked around \add at the people\add*. Then he exclaimed to his disciples, “It is very difficult for people who are wealthy to \add decide to\add* let God rule their lives!”
\v 24 The disciples were surprised at what he said. \add They thought that God favored the rich people, so if God did not save them, he would not save anyone\add*. So Jesus replied again to them, “My dear friends, it is very difficult for anyone \add to decide\add* to let God rule his life.
\v 25 It is impossible for a camel to go through the eye of a needle. It is almost as difficult [HYP] for rich people \add to decide\add* to let God rule their \add lives\add*.”
\v 26 The disciples were very astonished. So they said to each other, “If that is so, ◄it will be unlikely that anyone will be saved {that God will save anyone}!/will \add God\add* save anyone?► [RHQ]”
\v 27 Jesus looked at them and then he said, “\add Yes\add*, it is impossible for people \add to save themselves!\add* But God certainly can \add save them\add*, because God can do anything!”
\v 28 Peter exclaimed, “\add You know that\add* we have left behind everything and we have become your disciples. \add So\add*, ◄\add what about us/will God <accept us/reward us>\add*►?”
\v 29 Jesus replied, “I want you to know this: Those who have left \add their\add* houses, \add their\add* brothers, \add their\add* sisters, \add their\add* father, \add their\add* mother, \add their\add* children, or \add their\add* plots of ground, to \add be\add* my \add disciples\add* and to \add proclaim\add* the good news,
\v 30 will receive in this life a hundred times as much \add as they left behind. That will include houses and people as dear as\add* brothers and sisters and mothers and children, and plots of ground. Furthermore, although people will persecute them \add here on earth because they believe in me\add*, in the future age \add they\add* will ◄\add have\add* eternal life/live \add with God\add* eternally►.
\v 31 But I \add warn you all\add*: Many of you who \add now consider yourselves\add* to be very important will be unimportant \add at that future time\add*, and many of you who \add now consider yourselves\add* to be unimportant will be very important \add at that future time\add*!”
\s1 As they were traveling toward Jerusalem, Jesus took the disciples aside and began to tell them again about what was going to happen to him.
\sr Mark 10:32-34
\p
\v 32 \add Some days later as they continued to travel\add*, Jesus and his disciples were walking on the road that leads up to Jerusalem \add city\add*. Jesus was walking ahead of them. \add The disciples/apostles\add* were astonished \add that he was going to where there were many people who opposed him\add*, and the other people who were with them were afraid \add about what would happen to him in Jerusalem. Along the way he took the twelve disciples to a place by themselves\add*. Then he began to tell them again about what was going to happen to him, saying,
\v 33 “Listen carefully! We are going up to Jerusalem. There the chief priests and the men who teach the Jewish laws will be enabled {someone will help the chief priests and those who teach our \add Jewish\add* laws} to seize me. Then they will declare that I must die, \add even though\add* I am the one who came from heaven. Then they will take me to the Roman \add authorities\add*.
\v 34 Those men will ridicule me. They will spit on me. They will whip me. Then they will kill me. But on the third day after that, I will become alive again!”
\s1 After James and John requested to sit on the right and left of Jesus when he rules, Jesus told them what will happen and how they should act.
\sr Mark 10:35-45
\p
\v 35 \add Along the way\add* James and John, \add who were\add* the two sons of Zebedee, approached Jesus and they said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us what we will ask you to do!”
\v 36 He said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?”
\v 37 They said to him, “When you \add rule\add* gloriously, \add let us rule with you\add*. Let one of us \add sit\add* at your right side and one sit at your left side.”
\v 38 But Jesus said to them, “You do not understand what you are asking for.” Then he asked them, “Can you endure suffering [MTY] like I am about to suffer? Can you endure being killed [MTY] as I will be killed {people killing you as they will kill me}?”
\v 39 They said to him, “\add Yes\add*, we are able \add to do that\add*!” Then Jesus said to them, “\add It is true that\add* you will endure suffering [MTY] like I will suffer, and you will endure being killed as I will be killed {people killing you as they will kill me}.
\v 40 But I am not the one who chooses the ones who will sit next to me \add and rule with me. God will give\add* those places to the ones he appoints.”
\p
\v 41 The \add other\add* ten \add disciples later\add* heard about what James and John \add had requested\add*. As a result, they were angry with them \add because they also wanted to rule with Jesus in the highest positions\add*.
\v 42 Then, after Jesus called them all together, he said to them, “You know that those who rule the non-Jews \add enjoy\add* showing that they are powerful. You also know that officials enjoy commanding others.
\v 43 But do not be like them! On the contrary, all those among you who want \add God to consider them\add* great must become \add like\add* servants to \add the rest of\add* you.
\v 44 Furthermore, if anyone among you wants \add God to consider him\add* to be the most important, he must \add act like\add* a servant for the rest of you.
\v 45 \add You should imitate me\add*. Even though I am the one who has come from heaven, I did not come to be served {for others to serve me}. On the contrary, I came in order to serve others and to allow others to kill me, in order that my dying for people would be like a payment to rescue \add many people from being punished\add* {\add God punishing them\add*} \add for their sins\add*.”
\s1 After a blind man called out and asked Jesus to have mercy on him, Jesus healed him.
\sr Mark 10:46-52
\p
\v 46 \add On the way to Jerusalem, Jesus and the disciples came to Jericho town\add*. Afterwards, while they were leaving Jericho along with a great crowd, a blind man who habitually begged \add for money\add* was sitting beside the road. His name was Bartimaeus and his father's name was Timaeus.
\v 47 When he heard people say that Jesus from Nazareth \add was passing by\add*, he shouted, “Jesus! \add You who are the Messiah\add* descended from \add King\add* David, ◄be merciful to/help► me!”
\v 48 Many people rebuked him and told him that he should be quiet. But he shouted even more, “\add You who are the Messiah\add* descended from \add King David\add*, ◄be merciful to/help► me!”
\v 49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him \add to come over here\add*!” They summoned the blind man, saying, “Jesus is calling you! So cheer up and get up \add and come\add*!”
\v 50 He threw aside his cloak as he jumped up, and he came to Jesus.
\v 51 Jesus asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man said to him, “Sir, I \add want to be able\add* to see again!”
\v 52 Jesus said to him, “\add I am\add* healing you \add because\add* you believed \add in me\add*. So you may go \add home\add*!” He could see immediately. And he went with Jesus along the road.
\c 11
\s1 They brought a young donkey to Jesus; then Jesus mounted it and rode to Jerusalem with people shouting praise of him as they went along.
\sr Mark 11:1-11
\p
\v 1 When they came near to Jerusalem, they came to Bethphage and Bethany \add villages\add* near Olive \add Tree\add* Hill. Then Jesus \add summoned\add* two of his disciples.
\v 2 He said to them, “Go to that village just ahead of you. As soon as you enter it, you will see a donkey that no one has ever ridden, that has been tied {people have tied} up. Untie it, and then bring it \add to me\add*.
\v 3 If anyone says to you, Why are you doing that?, say, \add Jesus\add*, our Lord, needs \add to use\add* it. He will send it back here \add with someone\add* as soon as \add he no longer needs it\add*.’”
\v 4 So \add the two disciples\add* went and they found the young donkey. It was tied close to the door \add of a house\add*, which was beside the street. Then they untied it. \v 5 Some of the \add people who were there\add* said to them, “Why are you untying the donkey?”
\v 6 They told them what Jesus had said. So the people permitted them \add to take the donkey\add*.
\v 7 They brought the donkey to Jesus. \add The disciples\add* put some of their clothes on it \add in order to make something for him to sit on\add*. \v 8 Many people spread their cloaks on the road \add to honor him as a king\add*. Others, \add in order to honor him\add*, spread along the road branches that they cut from \add palm trees\add* in the fields \add beside the road\add*.
\v 9 The people who were going in front of him and behind him were all shouting \add things like\add*, “Praise God!” “May God bless this one who comes ◄with his authority/as his representative► [MTY].”
\v 10 “May you be blessed {May \add God\add* bless you} when you rule \add like\add* our ancestor \add King\add* David ruled!” “Praise God who is in the highest heaven!”
\p
\v 11 He entered Jerusalem \add with them\add*, and then he went into the Temple \add courtyard\add*. After he looked around at everything \add there\add*, he left \add the city\add* because it was already late \add in the afternoon\add*. He returned to Bethany \add town\add* with the twelve \add disciples and slept there\add*.
\s1 Jesus cursed a fig tree as a sign of what would happen to the people of Israel.
\sr Mark 11:12-14
\p
\v 12 The next day, as Jesus and his disciples were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry.
\v 13 He saw from a distance a fig tree with all its leaves, so he went \add to it\add* to see if he could find any \add figs\add* on it. But when he came to it, he found only leaves on it. This was because it was not yet time when \add normal fig trees have ripe\add* figs.
\v 14 \add But to illustrate how God would punish the nation of Israel,\add* he said to the tree, “No one shall ever eat from you again \add because you will no longer bear figs\add*.” The disciples heard what he said.
\s1 Jesus expelled those who were buying and selling goods in the Temple and taught that the Temple was to be a place of prayer. These actions angered the priests and scribes who, then, looked for a way to kill Jesus.
\sr Mark 11:15-19
\p
\v 15 Jesus and his disciples went \add back\add* to Jerusalem. He entered the Temple \add courtyard. He saw people\add* who were selling and buying \add animals for sacrifices. They were spoiling the place of worship\add*. He chased those people \add from the Temple courtyard. He also overturned the tables of those who were giving Temple tax money in exchange for Roman\add* coins. He overturned the seats of the men who were selling doves \add for sacrifice\add*,
\v 16 and he would not allow anyone who was carrying anything \add to sell\add* to go through the Temple \add area\add*.
\v 17 Then as he taught those people, he said to them, “It is written {\add One of the prophets\add* wrote} \add in the Scriptures that God said\add*, \add I want\add* my house to be called {\add people\add* to call my house} a house where \add people from\add* all nations may pray, but you bandits have made it \add like\add* a cave where you can hide! ◄\add You know that!/Do you not know that\add*?► [RHQ]”
\v 18 The chief priests and the men who taught the \add Jewish\add* laws \add later\add* heard \add about what he had done\add*. So they planned how they might kill him, \add but they knew that it would be difficult\add*, because they realized that the crowd was amazed at what he was teaching and they feared \add that the people would soon decide that Jesus had more authority over the Temple than they did\add* (OR, \add feared what the people would do if they tried to arrest Jesus\add*).
\v 19 That evening, \add Jesus and his disciples\add* left the city \add and again slept in Bethany\add*.
\s1 When Jesus and his disciples passed the fig tree that Jesus had cursed, they saw that it had withered. Jesus used this as an illustration for trusting that God would answer prayer.
\sr Mark 11:20-25
\p
\v 20 \add The next\add* morning while they were going along \add the road toward Jerusalem, they saw that the fig tree that Jesus had cursed\add* had withered completely.
\v 21 Peter remembered \add what Jesus had said to the fig tree\add* and he exclaimed to Jesus, “Teacher, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered!”
\v 22 Jesus replied, “\add You should not be surprised that God did what I asked!\add* You must trust that God \add will do whatever you ask him to do!\add*
\v 23 \add Also\add* note this: If anyone says to this hill, Be raised up {Rise up} and then be thrown {throw yourself} into the lake! and if he does not doubt \add that what he asks for will happen\add*, that is, if he believes that what he asks for will happen, \add God\add* will do it for him.
\v 24 So I tell you, whenever you ask \add God\add* for something when you pray, believe that you will receive it, and, \add if you do, God\add* will do it \add for you\add*.
\v 25-26 Now, I \add tell you this also\add*: Whenever you are praying, if you have a grudge against people \add because they have harmed you\add*, forgive them, in order that your Father in heaven will \add likewise\add* forgive your sins.”
\s1 The chief priests, scribes and elders asked Jesus by what authority he was doing these things. He, then, asked them a question that they would not answer; so he did not answer theirs.
\sr Mark 11:27-33
\p
\v 27 Jesus and his disciples arrived in the Temple \add courtyard\add* in Jerusalem again. While Jesus was walking \add there, a group consisting of\add* chief priests, \add some\add* men who taught the \add Jewish\add* laws, and elders came to him and they said to him,
\v 28 “By what authority are you doing these things? Who authorized you to do things \add like those you did here yesterday\add*?”
\v 29 Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you who authorized me to do those things.
\v 30 Did God [MTY] or people \add authorize\add* John to baptize \add those who came to him\add*?”
\v 31 They debated among themselves \add as to what they should answer\add*. They \add said to each other\add*, “If we say that it was God \add who authorized\add* him, he will say to us, Therefore, ◄you should have believed what John said!/why did you not believe what John said?► [RHQ]
\v 32 On the other hand, if we say that it was people \add who authorized John, then what will happen to us\add*?” They were afraid \add to say that about where John got his authority, because they knew that\add* the people \add would be very angry with them. They knew that\add* all the people truly believed that John was a prophet \add whom God had sent\add*.
\v 33 So they answered Jesus, “We do not know \add where John got his authority\add*.” Then Jesus said to them, “\add Because you did not answer my question, I\add* will not tell you who authorized me to do those things \add here yesterday\add*.”
\c 12
\s1 After Jesus told the Jewish leaders a parable, they realized that he was accusing them of wanting to kill him, but they feared how the people would react if they arrested Jesus.
\sr Mark 12:1-12

\v 1 Then Jesus told \add those Jewish leaders\add* a parable. \add He wanted to show what God would do to those who rejected the former prophets and himself. He said\add*, “A certain man planted a vineyard. He built a fence around it \add in order to protect it\add*. He made a stone tank \add to collect the juice that\add* they would press \add out of the grapes\add*. He also built a tower \add for someone to sit in to guard his vineyard\add*. Then he leased the vineyard to some men to care for it and \add to\add* give him some of the \add grapes\add* in return. Then he went away to another country.
\v 2 When the time came to harvest the \add grapes\add*, he sent a servant to the men \add who were taking care of the vineyard\add* in order to receive from them his share of the grapes that the vineyard had produced.
\v 3 But \add after the servant arrived\add*, they grabbed him and beat him, and they did not give him any fruit. Then they sent him away.
\v 4 Later the one who owne d the vineyard sent another servant to them. But they beat that one on his head, and they insulted him.
\v 5 Later he sent another servant. That man they killed. They mistreated many other servants \add whom he sent\add*. Some they beat and some they killed.
\v 6 The man still had one other \add person with him\add*. It was his son. He loved him very much. So, finally he sent his son to them because he thought that they would respect him \add and give him some of the grapes\add*. \v 7 But \add when they saw his son coming\add*, those men who were looking after the vineyard said to each other, Look! Here comes the man who will some day inherit the vineyard! So let's kill him in order that this vineyard will be ours!
\v 8 They seized him and killed him. Then they threw his body outside the vineyard.
\v 9 So ◄do you know what the man who owns the vineyard will do?/I will tell you what the man who owns the vineyard will do [RHQ]►. He will come, and he will kill those evil men who were taking care of his vineyard. Then he will arrange for other people to take care of it.
\v 10 \add Now think carefully about these words\add*, which you have read \add in\add* the Scriptures:
\p The men who were building the building rejected one stone. But others \add put that same stone in its proper place, and\add* it has become the most important stone in the building [MET]!
\v 11 The Lord has done this, and we marvel as we look at it.”
\p
\v 12 Then \add the Jewish leaders\add* realized that he was accusing them when he told this story \add about what those wicked people did\add*. So they wanted to seize him. But they were afraid of what the crowds \add would do if they did that\add*. So they left him and went away.
\s1 Jesus foiled the Jewish leaders' attempt to trap him by their question of whether they should pay taxes to the Roman government.
\sr Mark 12:13-17
\p
\v 13 The \add Jewish leaders\add* sent to \add Jesus\add* some Pharisees \add who thought that the Jews should pay only the tax that their own Jewish authorities required people to pay\add*. They also sent some members of the party that supported Herod \add Antipas and the Roman government\add*. They wanted to make Jesus say something wrong \add that would make one of those groups very angry with him\add*.
\v 14 After they arrived, they said to him \add deceivingly\add*, “Teacher, we know that you \add teach\add* the truth. We also know that you are not concerned about \add what\add* people \add say about you, even if an important person does not like what you say\add*. Instead, you teach truthfully what God wants \add us to do\add*. So \add tell us what you think about this matter:\add* Is it right that we pay taxes to the Roman government, or not [MTY]? Should we pay the taxes, or should we not pay them?”
\v 15 Jesus knew that they did not really want to know \add what God wanted them to do\add*. So he said to them, “◄I \add know that\add* you are \add just\add* trying to make me say something wrong for which you can arrest me./Why are you \add just\add* trying to make me say something wrong for which you can arrest me?► [RHQ] \add But I will answer your question anyway\add*. Bring me a coin so that I might \add ask you something after\add* I look at it.”
\v 16 After they brought him a coin, he asked them, “Whose picture is \add on\add* this \add coin\add*? And \add whose\add* name \add is on it\add*?” They replied, “It is a picture and the name of Caesar, \add the man who rules the Roman government\add*.”
\v 17 Then Jesus said to them, “\add That is correct, so\add* give to the government [MTY] what they \add require\add*, and give to God what he \add requires\add*.” They were \add frustrated at his answer but\add* amazed at what he said, \add because they were not able to accuse him because of what he said\add*.
\s1 Jesus showed from Scripture that the Sadducees were wrong in ridiculing the idea of life after death.
\sr Mark 12:18-27

\v 18 \add Men who belong to the\add* Sadducee \add sect\add* deny that people become alive again after they die. \add In order to discredit\add* Jesus \add by ridiculing the idea that people will live again, some of\add* them came to him and asked him,
\v 19 “Teacher, Moses wrote for us \add Jews\add* that if a man who has no children dies, his brother should marry the dead man's widow. \add Then if those two bear children, everyone will consider that those children are the\add* children of the man who died, \add and in that way the dead man will continue to have descendants\add*.
\v 20 \add So here is an example\add*. There were seven boys \add in one family\add*. The oldest one married \add a woman\add*, but \add he and his wife\add* did not bear any children. Then he \add later\add* died.
\v 21 The second \add brother followed this law and\add* married that woman and he, too, did not bear any children. Then he \add later\add* died. The third \add brother did\add* like \add his other brothers did. But he also did not bear any children, and later died\add*.
\v 22 Eventually all seven \add brothers married that woman one by one\add*, but they had no children and one by one they died. Afterwards the woman died, too.
\v 23 Therefore, \add if it were true what some people say, that people will become alive again after they die\add*, whose wife do you think that woman will be when people become alive again? ◄\add Keep in mind that\add* she was married to all seven \add brothers\add*!/She was married to all seven \add brothers, so how can anyone decide\add* [RHQ]?►”
\v 24 Jesus replied to them, “You are certainly wrong [RHQ]. You do not know \add what they have written in\add* the Scriptures \add about this\add*. You also do not understand God's power \add to make people alive again\add*.
\v 25 \add That woman will not be the wife of any of them\add* because when people have become alive again, instead of men having wives and women having husbands, they will be like the angels in heaven, \add who do not marry\add*.
\v 26 But as to people becoming alive again after they die, in the book that Moses \add wrote, he said something about people who have died\add* that I am sure that you have read [RHQ]. When Moses \add was looking at\add* the bush \add that was burning\add*, God said to him, I am the God whom Abraham \add worships\add* and the God whom Isaac \add worships\add* and the God whom Jacob \add worships\add*.
\v 27 It is not dead people who worship God. It is living people who worship him. \add Abraham, Isaac and Jacob died long before Moses lived, but God said that they were still worshipping him, so we know their spirits were still alive!\add* So your \add claim that dead people do not become alive again\add* is very wrong.”
\s1 Jesus commended a scribe who accepted Jesus' assessment of the two greatest commandments, after which they asked Jesus no more questions to trap him.
\sr Mark 12:28-34
\p
\v 28 A man who taught the \add Jewish\add* laws heard their discussion. He knew that Jesus answered the question well. So he stepped forward and asked Jesus, “Which commandment is the most important?”
\v 29 Jesus answered, “The most important commandment is this: Listen, \add you people of\add* Israel! \add You must worship\add* the Lord, our God, our only Lord.
\v 30 \add You must show that you love him in all the ways that you live\add* Show it in all that you want and feel, in all that you think, and in all that you do!
\v 31 The next \add most important commandment\add* is: You must love people you come in contact with as much as you love yourself. No other commandment is more important than these two!”
\v 32 The man said to Jesus, “Teacher, \add you have answered\add* well. You correctly said that he is the only \add God\add* and that there is no other God \add we must worship/obey\add*.
\v 33 You have also said correctly that we ◄\add should/must show that we\add*► love God by all that we are, by all that we think, and by the way that we live. And you have said correctly that we must love ◄people with whom we come in contact/others► as much as we love ourselves. And you have also correctly said that doing these things \add pleases God\add* more than offering/giving animals to him or burning \add other\add* sacrifices.”
\v 34 Jesus realized that this man had answered wisely. So he said to him, “\add I perceive that\add* you will soon \add decide to let\add* God rule your life.” After that, \add the Jewish leaders\add* were afraid to ask him any more questions \add like that to try to trap him\add*.
\s1 Jesus showed from Scripture that the Messiah must be David's Lord as well as his descendant.
\sr Mark 12:35-37
\p
\v 35 \add Later\add*, while he was teaching in the Temple \add courtyard\add*, Jesus said \add to the people\add*, “These men who teach the \add Jewish\add* laws, ◄they must be wrong when they say that the Messiah is \add merely\add* a descendant of \add King\add* David!/why do they say that the Messiah is \add merely\add* a descendant of \add King\add* David?► [RHQ]
\v 36 The Holy Spirit caused David himself to say \add about the Messiah\add*,
\q God said to my Lord, Sit here beside me at the place where I will highly honor you! Sit here while I completely defeat your enemies! [MTY]
\p
\v 37 Therefore, \add because\add* David himself calls \add the Messiah\add* my Lord, ◄the Messiah cannot be \add just\add* a man who descended \add from King David!\add*/how can the Messiah be \add just\add* a man who descended \add from King David\add*?► [RHQ] \add He must be much greater than David!\add*” Many people listened to him gladly \add as he taught those things\add*.
\s1 Jesus warned them about the scribes' hypocritical actions.
\sr Mark 12:38-40
\p
\v 38 While Jesus was teaching \add the people\add*, he said to them, “Beware that you \add do not act like\add* the men who teach our \add Jewish\add* laws. They \add like people to honor them, so\add* they put on long robes and walk around \add in order to show people how important they are\add*. They also like people to greet them \add respectfully\add* in the marketplaces.
\v 39 \add They like to sit\add* in the most important seats in our ◄synagogue/Jewish meeting place►. At festivals, \add they like to sit in\add* the seats where the most honored people sit.
\v 40 They ◄swindle/take for themselves► the houses \add and property\add* of widows by cheating them. \add Then\add* they pretend \add that they are good\add* by praying long prayers \add publicly. God\add* will certainly punish them severely!”
\s1 Jesus told them that a poor widow's tiny sacrificial offering was worth more in God's sight than large amounts of money from rich people.
\sr Mark 12:41-44
\p
\v 41 \add Later\add*, Jesus sat down \add in the Temple courtyard opposite the boxes in which people put offerings. As he was sitting there\add*, he watched as all the people put money in the box. Many rich people put in large amounts \add of money\add*.
\v 42 Then a poor widow came along and put in two small copper coins, which had a very small value.
\v 43-44 He gathered his disciples around him and said to them, “The truth is that these other people have a lot of money, \add but\add* they gave \add only a small part of it\add*. But this woman, who is very poor, has put in all the money that she had to pay for the things she needs. \add So God considers that\add* this poor widow has put more money into the box than all the other people!”

\s1 Jesus prophesied that the Temple would be completely destroyed.
\sr Mark 13:1-2

\v 1 While Jesus was leaving the Temple \add area \add*, one of his disciples said to him, “Teacher, look at how marvelous \add these \add* huge stones \add in the walls are \add* and how wonderful \add these \add* buildings \add are \add*!”
\v 2 Jesus said to him, “\add Yes\add*, these buildings that you are looking \add at\add* [RHQ] \add are wonderful\add*, but I \add want to tell you something about\add* them. They will be destroyed {\add Foreign invaders\add* will destroy \add them\add*} \add completely, with the result that\add* no stone here \add in this Temple area\add* will be left on top of another stone.”
\s1 Jesus taught his disciples about the events that will precede his coming again.
\sr Mark 13:3-37
\p
\v 3 After they arrived on Olive \add Tree\add* Hill across \add the valley\add* from the Temple, Jesus sat down. When Peter, James, John, and Andrew were alone with him, they asked him,
\v 4 “Tell us, when will \add that\add* happen \add to the buildings of the Temple? Tell us what will happen that will show us that all these things that God has planned\add* are about to be finished {that \add God\add* is about to finish all these things \add that he has planned\add*}.”
\v 5 Jesus replied to them, “\add I cannot give you a simple answer to your questions. All I will say is\add*, beware that no one deceives you \add concerning what will happen\add*
\v 6 Many people will come and say ◄that I sent them/that they have my authority► [MTY]. They will say, I am \add the Messiah!\add* They will deceive many people.
\v 7 Whenever people tell you about wars \add that are close\add* or wars that are far away, do not be troubled. \add God has said\add* that those things must happen. \add But when they do happen, do not think\add* that \add God\add* will finish all \add that he has planned\add* at that time!
\v 8 \add Groups who live in various\add* countries will fight each other, and various governments will fight each other. There will also be \add big\add* earthquakes in various places; and there will be famines. Yet, \add when these things happen, people will have only just begun to suffer. The first things that they suffer will be like\add* the first pains a woman \add suffers\add* who is about to bear a child. \add They will suffer much more after that\add*.
\p
\v 9 Be ready for \add what people will do to you at that time\add*. Because \add you believe in\add* me, they will arrest you and put you on trial before the religious councils. ◄In the synagogue/In the Jewish meeting place►, you will be beaten {others will beat you}. You will be put {\add People will put\add* you} \add on trial\add* in the presence of high government authorities. As a result, you will be able to tell them \add about me\add*.
\v 10 My good message must be proclaimed {\add You\add* must proclaim my good message} to \add people in\add* all people-groups before \add God finishes all that he has planned\add*.
\v 11 And when people arrest you in order to prosecute you \add because you believe in me\add*, do not worry before that happens about what you will say. Instead, say what \add God\add* puts into your mind at that time. Then it will not be \add just\add* you who will be speaking. It will be the Holy Spirit \add who will be speaking through you\add*.
\v 12 \add Other evil things will happen\add*: People \add who do not believe in me\add* will ◄betray/help others seize► their brothers \add and sisters\add* in order that \add the government\add* can execute them. Parents \add will betray\add* their children, and children will betray their parents so that \add the government\add* will kill their parents.
\v 13 \add In general\add*, you will be hated by most [HYP] people {most [HYP] people will hate you} because \add you believe in\add* me. But all you who continue \add to trust in me strongly\add* until your life is finished will be saved {\add God\add* will save all you who continue \add to trust in me strongly\add* until your life ends}.
\p
\v 14 \add During that time\add* the disgusting \add thing/person that the prophet Daniel described\add* will enter the Temple. It/He will defile \add the Temple when he enters it and will cause people to abandon it. When you see it/him standing there\add* where it/he should not be, \add you should run away quickly\add* (May everyone who is reading this pay attention to \add this warning from Jesus\add*!) \add At that time\add* those people who are in Judea \add district\add* must flee to \add higher\add* hills.
\v 15 Those people who are outside their houses must not enter their houses in order to get anything \add before they run away\add*.
\v 16 Those who are \add working\add* in a field must not return \add to their houses\add* in order to get \add additional\add* clothes \add before they flee\add*.
\v 17 But I feel very sorry for women who will be pregnant and women who will be nursing their babies in those days, \add because it will be very difficult for them to run away\add*
\v 18-19 In those days people will suffer very severely. People have never suffered like that since the time when God first created the world until now; and people will not \add suffer that way\add* again. \add So\add* pray that \add this painful time\add* will not happen in ◄winter/the rainy season►, \add when it will be hard to travel\add*.
\v 20 If the Lord \add God\add* had not \add decided that he would\add* shorten that time \add when people suffer so much\add*, everyone would die. But he has \add decided to\add* shorten that time because \add he is concerned about you\add* people whom he has chosen [DOU].
\v 21-22 \add At that time people who will\add* falsely \add say that they are\add* Messiahs and prophets will appear. Then they will perform many kinds ◄of miracles/of things that ordinary people cannot do► [DOU]. They will even try to deceive \add you\add* people whom God has chosen, \add but they will not\add* be able to do that. So at that time if someone says to you, Look, here is the Messiah! or \add if someone says\add*, Look, there he is! do not believe it!
\v 23 Be alert! Remember that \add I\add* have warned you about all this before \add it happens.\add*
\p
\v 24 After the time when people suffer like that, the sun will become dark, the moon will not shine,
\v 25 the stars will fall from the sky, and all things in the sky will be shaken {\add God will cause\add* all things in the sky to shake}.
\v 26 Then people will see \add me\add*, the one who came from heaven, coming through the clouds powerfully and gloriously.
\v 27 Then I will send out my angels in order that they gather together the people whom \add God\add* has chosen from \add everywhere, and that includes\add* all the most remote places on earth [IDM, DOU].
\p
\v 28 Now I \add want you to\add* learn something from this parable about \add the way\add* fig trees \add grow\add*. \add In this area\add*, when their buds become tender and their leaves begin to sprout, you know that summer is near. \v 29 Similarly, when you see \add what I have just described\add* happening, you yourselves will know that it is very near \add the time for me to return\add* [MTY]. \add It will be as though I am\add* already at the door [HEN].
\v 30 Keep this in mind: You have observed the things that I have done and said, but all of those events \add that I have just told you about\add* will happen before all of you will die.
\v 31 You can \add be certain that\add* these things \add that I have prophesied\add* will happen. \add You can be more certain of that than\add* you can \add be certain that\add* the earth and what is in the sky will stay in place.
\v 32 But no one knows the exact time \add when I will return\add*. The angels in heaven also do not know. Even \add I, God's\add* son, do not know. Only my Father knows.
\v 33 So be ready, \add like people who are waiting for an important man to come\add*, because you do not know when that time will come \add when all these events will happen!\add*
\v 34 When a man who wants to travel \add to a distant place\add* is \add about to\add* leave his house, he tells his servants that they should manage the house. \add He tells\add* each one what he should do. Then he tells the doorkeeper to be ready \add for his return\add*.
\v 35 \add That man must always be\add* ready, \add because he does not know whether\add* his master will return in the evening, at midnight, when the rooster crows, or at dawn. \add Similarly\add*, you also must \add always\add* be ready, because you do not know \add when I will return\add*.
\v 36 \add May it not happen that\add* when I come suddenly, I will find that you are not ready!
\v 37 These words that I am saying to you \add disciples\add* I am saying to everyone \add who believes in me: Always\add* be ready!” \add That is what Jesus warned his disciples\add*.

\s1 The Jewish leaders planned how they could arrest Jesus without starting a riot.
\sr Mark 14:1-2
\p
\v 1 It was only two days before the \add people\add* ◄\add celebrated/started to celebrate\add*► \add for one week the\add* festival \add which they called\add* Passover. \add During those days they also\add* ◄\add celebrated\add* the festival of Unleavened Bread/\add ate\add* bread that had no yeast in it►. The chief priests and the men who taught the \add Jewish\add* laws were planning how they could seize Jesus secretly. \add They wanted to accuse him in front of the Roman authorities\add* so that they would execute him. \v 2 But they were saying to one another, “We must not \add do it\add* during the celebration, because, \add if we do it then\add*, the people will \add be very angry with us and\add* riot!”
\s1 Jesus commended a woman who extravagantly anointed Jesus in anticipation of his death. The chief priests agreed to pay Judas if he would help them seize Jesus.
\sr Mark 14:3-11
\p
\v 3 Jesus was at Bethany \add town\add* in the house of Simon, whom \add Jesus had healed from\add* leprosy. While they were eating, a woman came \add to him\add*. \add She was carrying\add* a stone jar that contained expensive \add fragrant\add* perfume called nard. She opened the jar and then she poured the perfume on Jesus' head.
\v 4 One of the people \add who were present\add* became angry and said to the others, “◄\add It is terrible that she\add* wasted that perfume!/\add Why did she\add* waste that perfume?► [RHQ]
\v 5 It could have been sold {\add We\add* could have sold it} for ◄a huge amount of money/an amount of money for which a person works for a year►, and then \add the money\add* could have been given {\add we\add* could have given \add the money\add*} to poor people!” So he rebuked her.
\v 6 But Jesus said, “Stop \add scolding\add* her! She has done to me what I \add consider to be\add* very appropriate/delightful. So ◄you should not bother her!/why do you bother her?► [RHQ]
\v 7 You will always have poor people among you. So you can help them whenever you want to. But I will not \add be here among\add* you much longer. \add So it is good for her to show now that she appreciates me\add*.
\v 8 \add It is appropriate that\add* she has done what she was able to do. \add It is as if she knew that I was going to die soon\add* and has anointed my body for their burying it.
\v 9 I will tell you this: Wherever the good message \add about me\add* is preached {people preach the good message} throughout the world, what she has done will be told {people will tell others what she has done \add to me\add*}, and as a result people will remember her.”
\p
\v 10 Then Judas Iscariot (OR, the man from Kerioth village) went to the chief priests in order to \add talk to them about\add* helping them to seize Jesus. He did that \add even though\add* he was one of the twelve \add disciples\add*
\v 11 When they heard \add what he was willing to do for them\add*, they were very happy. They promised that they would give him \add a large amount of\add* money \add for doing that. Judas agreed, so they gave him the money\add*. As a result, he \add began\add* watching for an opportunity ◄to betray Jesus/to enable Jesus' enemies to seize him►.
\s1 Two disciples followed Jesus' instructions and prepared the Passover meal.
\sr Mark 14:12-17
\p
\v 12 \add Two days later\add*, when they killed the lambs \add for the\add* festival at the beginning of the week when \add people ate\add* bread that had no yeast in it, Jesus' disciples said to him, “Where do you want us to go and prepare the meal for the Passover \add celebration\add* in order that you can eat it \add with us\add*?”
\v 13 So he \add chose\add* two of his disciples \add to prepare everything\add*. He said to them, “Go into \add Jerusalem\add* city. A man will meet you, who will be carrying a large jar full of water. Follow him.
\v 14 When he enters \add a house\add*, say to the man who owns the house, \add Our\add* teacher wants us to prepare \add the meal of\add* the Passover celebration so that he can eat it with us his disciples. ◄Please show us the room that he \add arranged with you about\add*./Where is the room that he \add arranged with you about\add*?► [RHQ]
\v 15 He will show you a large room that is on the upper floor \add of the house\add*. It will be furnished and ready \add for us to eat a meal in it\add*. Then prepare the meal there for us.”
\v 16 So the \add two\add* disciples left. They went into the city and found \add everything\add* to be just like he had told them. They prepared the \add meal for\add* the Passover \add celebration and then returned to Jesus and the other disciples\add*.
\v 17 When it was evening, Jesus arrived \add at that house\add* with the twelve \add disciples\add*.
\s1 During the Passover meal, Jesus prophesied that one disciple would betray him, and he gave them the bread and wine which he said represented his body and blood which would be sacrificed.
\sr Mark 14:18-26
\p
\v 18 As they were all sitting there \add and eating\add*, Jesus said, “Listen carefully to this: One of you will enable my enemies to seize me. Specifically, it is one of you who \add will do this in spite of the fact that he\add* is eating with me \add right now\add*!”
\v 19 The disciples became very sad and they said to him one by one, “Surely ◄it is not I!/I am not the one, am I?► [RHQ]”
\v 20 Then he said to them, “It is one of \add you\add* twelve \add disciples\add*, the one who is dipping \add bread\add* into the \add sauce in the\add* dish along with me.
\v 21 It is certain that \add I\add*, the one who came from heaven, will \add die\add*, because that is what has been {what \add the prophets\add* have} written about me. But there will be terrible \add punishment\add* for the man by whom I will be betrayed {who will ◄betray me/help my enemies to seize me►}! In fact, it would be better for that man if he had never been born!”

\v 22 While they were eating, he took \add a flat loaf of\add* bread and thanked God for it. Then he broke it \add into pieces\add* and gave it to them and said to them, “This \add bread represents\add* [MET] my body. Take it \add and eat it\add*.”
\v 23 Afterwards, he took a cup \add that contained wine\add* and thanked \add God for it\add*. Then he gave it to them, and then, as they all drank from it,
\v 24 he said to them, “This \add wine represents\add* [MET] my blood, which is about to be shed {which is about to flow from my body} \add when my enemies kill me\add*. With this blood I \add will sign\add* the agreement \add that God has made to forgive the sins of\add* many people.
\v 25 I want you to know this: I will not drink any more wine in this way until the time when I drink it with a new \add meaning\add* when I begin to rule as a king.”
\v 26 After they sang a hymn, they went out toward Olive \add Tree\add* Hill.
\s1 Jesus predicted that Peter would deny three times that he knew Jesus.
\sr Mark 14:27-31
\p
\v 27 \add While they were on their way\add*, Jesus said to them, “It has been {\add The prophets\add* have} written \add in the Scriptures that God said about me\add*, I will kill the shepherd and his sheep will scatter. \add Those words will come true. When they are about to capture me\add*, all of you will leave me and run away.
\v 28 But after I have been made {\add God\add* has made me} alive again, I will go ahead of you to Galilee \add district and meet you there\add*.”
\v 29 Then Peter said to him, “Perhaps all the \add other disciples\add* will leave you, but not I! I will not \add leave you\add*!”
\v 30 Then Jesus said to him, “The truth is that this very night, before the rooster crows a second time, you yourself will deny three times \add that you know\add* me!”
\v 31 But Peter replied strongly, “Even if they kill me \add as I defend\add* you, I will never deny \add that I know\add* you!” And all \add the other disciples\add* said the same thing.
\s1 While the disciples slept, Jesus prayed that God would spare him from the coming suffering.
\sr Mark 14:32-42

\v 32 \add On the way\add*, Jesus and the disciples came to the place that \add people\add* call Gethsemane. Then he said to \add some/eight of\add* his disciples, “Stay here while I pray!”
\v 33 Then he took Peter, James, and John with him. He became extremely distressed, and he said to them,
\v 34 “I [SYN] am very sorrowful. \add It is as if\add* I were about to die. \add You men\add* remain here and stay awake!” \v 35 He went a bit further and threw himself on the ground. Then he prayed that if it were possible, he would not \add have to suffer\add* [MTY].
\v 36 He said, “O my Father, \add because\add* you are able to do everything, rescue me so that I do not have to suffer \add now\add* [MTY]! But do not \add do\add* what I want. Instead, \add do\add* what you want!”
\v 37 Then he returned and found his \add disciples\add* sleeping. He \add woke them up and\add* said, “Simon! ◄\add I am disappointed that\add* you fell asleep and that you were not able to stay awake for just a short time!/\add Why is it that\add* you fell asleep and that you were not able to stay awake for just one hour?► [RHQ]”
\v 38 \add And he said to them\add*, “You want \add to do what I say\add*, but you are not strong enough [MTY] \add to actually do it\add*. So keep awake and pray in order that you can resist when \add something like this\add* tempts you!”
\v 39 Then he went away again and prayed again what he prayed before.
\v 40 When he returned, he found that they were sleeping again because they were \add so\add* sleepy that they could not keep their eyes open. \add Because they were ashamed\add*, they did not know what to say to him \add when he awakened them\add*.
\v 41 \add Then he went and prayed again\add*. He returned a third time; \add and he found them sleeping again\add*. He \add woke\add* all of \add them and\add* said to them, “◄\add I am disappointed that you are\add* sleeping again!/\add Why are you\add* sleeping again?► [RHQ] \add You have slept\add* enough. The time \add for me to suffer\add* is about to begin. Look! Someone is about to enable sinful men to seize me, the one who came from heaven.
\v 42 \add So\add* get up! Let's go \add toward him\add* Look! Here comes the one who is enabling them to seize me!”
\s1 Judas betrayed Jesus.
\sr Mark 14:43-49
\p
\v 43 While he was still speaking, Judas \add arrived\add*. \add Even though he was\add* one of \add Jesus'\add* twelve \add disciples\add*, he came \add to enable Jesus' enemies to seize him\add*. A crowd who carried swords and clubs was with him. The \add leaders of\add* the Jewish Council had sent them.
\v 44 \add Judas\add*, who was ◄betraying Jesus/helping Jesus' enemies to seize him►, had \add previously\add* told this crowd, “The man whom I kiss is the one \add whom you want. When I kiss him\add*, seize him and lead him away \add while you guard him\add* carefully.”
\v 45 So, when Judas arrived, he immediately went to Jesus and said, “My teacher!” Then he kissed Jesus \add on his neck/cheek\add*.
\v 46 Then \add the crowd\add* seized Jesus.
\v 47 But one of the \add disciples\add* who was standing nearby drew his short sword. He struck the servant of the high priest with it \add to kill him, but he only\add* cut off his ear.
\v 48-49 Jesus said to them, “◄\add It is ridiculous that\add* you come \add here to seize\add* me with swords and clubs, as if I were a bandit!/Have you come \add here to seize\add* me with swords and clubs, as if I were a bandit [RHQ]?► Day after day I was with you in the Temple \add courtyard\add* teaching \add the people\add* Why did you not seize me then? \add But this is happening\add* in order that \add what the prophets have written in\add* the Scriptures \add about me\add* may be fulfilled {may happen}.”
\s1 Mark ran away.
\sr Mark 14:50-52

\v 50 All \add the disciples at once\add* left him and ran away.
\v 51 At that time, ◄a young man/I► was following Jesus. He/\add I was\add* wearing only a linen cloth around his/my body. The crowd seized him/me.
\v 52 But, \add as he/I pulled away from them\add*, he/I left behind the linen cloth \add in their hands\add*, and then he/I ran away naked.
\s1 After witnesses accusing Jesus contradicted each other, Jesus said that he was the Son of God, the Messiah, after which they decided that Jesus must die.
\sr Mark 14:53-65
\p
\v 53 The men \add who had seized\add* Jesus led him away to \add the house where\add* the high priest \add lived\add*. All of the Jewish Council were gathering \add there\add*.
\v 54 Peter followed Jesus at a distance. He went into the courtyard \add of the house\add* where the high priest \add lived\add*, and sat there with the men who guarded \add the house of the high priest\add*. He was warming himself beside a fire.
\v 55 The chief priests and all the rest of the Jewish council \add had already\add* tried to find people who would tell lies about Jesus \add in order that they could convince the Roman authorities\add* to execute him. But they did not succeed,
\v 56 because, although many people spoke lies about him, they contradicted each other.
\v 57 \add Finally\add*, some stood up and accused him falsely by saying,
\v 58 “We heard him when he said, I will destroy this Temple that was built by men, and then within three days I will build another temple ◄without help from anyone else/that human hands will not build►.’”
\v 59 But, what \add some of\add* these men said also did not agree with \add what others of them said\add*.
\p
\v 60 Then the high priest \add himself\add* stood up in front of them and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to reply? What \add do you say about\add* all the things that they are saying in order to accuse you?”
\v 61 But Jesus was silent and did not reply [DOU]. Then the high priest \add tried again\add*. He asked him, “Are you the Messiah? \add Do you say that you are\add* ◄the Son of God/the man who is also God►?”
\v 62 Jesus said, “I am. Furthermore, you will see me, the one who came from heaven, \add ruling\add* beside God, who is completely powerful. \add You will also see me\add* coming down through the clouds in the sky!”
\v 63 \add In response to Jesus' words\add*, the high priest tore his outer garment. \add That was their custom to show that he was shocked that Jesus had said that he was equal to God\add*. Then he said, “We certainly do not [RHQ] need any \add more\add* people who will testify \add against this man\add*,
\v 64 \add because\add* you have heard what he said against God! \add He claimed to be equal with God\add* Therefore, what have you decided?” They all said that Jesus was guilty and deserved ◄to be executed/that they should kill him►.
\v 65 Then some of them began spitting on Jesus. They put a blindfold on him, and then they began striking him and saying to him, “\add If you are\add* a prophet, tell us \add who hit you\add*!” And those who were guarding Jesus struck him with their hands.
\s1 As Jesus predicted, Peter denied three times that he knew Jesus.
\sr Mark 14:66-72

\v 66 While Peter was outside in the courtyard \add of the high priest's house\add*, one of the girls who worked for the high priest came \add near him\add*.
\v 67 When she saw Peter warming himself \add beside the fire\add*, she looked at him \add closely\add*. Then she said, “You also were with Jesus, that man from Nazareth \add town\add*!”
\v 68 But he denied it by saying, “I do not know or understand [DOU] what you are talking about!” Then he went away \add from there\add* to the gate \add of the courtyard\add*.
\v 69 \add The \add* servant girl saw him there and said to the people who were standing nearby, “This man is one of \add those who have been with that man they arrested \add*.” \v 70 But he denied it again. After a little while, one of those who were standing there said to Peter again, “\add The way you speak shows that\add* you also are from Galilee \add district\add*. So it is certain that you are one of those \add who accompanied Jesus!\add*”
\v 71 But he began to exclaim, “I do not know the man that you are talking about! Because God knows that I am speaking truthfully, may he punish me \add if I am lying\add*!”
\v 72 Immediately the rooster crowed a second time. Then Peter remembered what Jesus had said to him \add before\add*, “Before the rooster crows a second time, you will deny three times \add that you know me.” When he realized that he had denied it three times\add*, he started crying.

\s1 In the governor Pilate's presence Jesus refused to answer accusations against him.
\sr Mark 15:1-5

\v 1 Very early in the morning the chief priests met together with \add the rest of\add* the Jewish council, \add in order to decide how to accuse Jesus before the Roman governor. Their guards\add* tied Jesus' hands \add again\add*. They took him to \add the house of\add* Pilate, \add the governor, and they started to accuse him, saying\add* “\add Jesus is claiming that he is a king!\add*”
\v 2 Pilate asked Jesus, “Do you \add claim to be\add* the king of the Jews?” Jesus answered him, “You yourself have said so.”
\v 3 Then the chief priests claimed that Jesus had done many bad things.
\v 4 So Pilate asked him again, “Don't you have anything to say? Listen to how many bad things they are saying that you \add have done\add*!” \v 5 But \add even though Jesus was not guilty\add*, he did not say anything more. The result was that Pilate was very much surprised.
\s1 At the crowd's insistence, Pilate released a criminal and gave orders that Jesus should be crucified.
\sr Mark 15:6-15
\p
\v 6 It was the governor's custom \add each year\add* during the \add Passover\add* celebration to release \add one person who was in prison. He customarily released\add* whichever prisoner the people requested.
\v 7 \add At that time\add* there was a man called Barabbas who had been {whom \add the soldiers had\add*} \add put in prison with some other men\add*. Those men had murdered \add some soldiers\add* when they rebelled \add against the Roman government\add*.
\v 8 A crowd approached \add Pilate\add* and asked him \add to release someone\add*, just like he customarily did for them \add during the Passover celebration\add*.
\v 9 Pilate answered them, “Would you like me to release for you the \add man whom you\add* Jewish \add people say is your\add* king?”
\v 10 \add He asked this\add* because he realized what the chief priests were wanting to do. They were accusing Jesus because they were jealous of him \add because many people were becoming his disciples\add*.
\v 11 But the chief priests urged the crowd \add to request\add* that Pilate release Barabbas for them instead \add of Jesus\add*.
\v 12 Pilate said to them again, “\add If I release Barabbas\add*, what do you want me to do with the man whom \add some of\add* you Jews say is \add your\add* king?”
\v 13 Then they shouted again, “\add Command that your soldiers\add* crucify him!”
\v 14 Then Pilate said to them, “Why? What crime has he committed?” But they shouted even louder, “\add Command your soldiers to\add* crucify him!”
\v 15 So, because Pilate wanted to please the crowd, he released Barabbas for them. Then, after \add his soldiers\add* had whipped Jesus with leather straps into which they had fastened metal pieces, \add Pilate told the soldiers to take him away\add* in order that he would be crucified {they would crucify him}.
\s1 The soldiers ridiculed Jesus as being a king.
\sr Mark 15:16-20
\p
\v 16 The soldiers took Jesus into the \add courtyard of the\add* palace \add where Pilate lived\add*. That place was the government headquarters. Then they summoned the whole ◄cohort/group of soldiers► \add who were on duty there\add*.
\v 17 \add After the soldiers gathered together\add*, they put a purple robe on Jesus. Then they placed on his head a crown that they made from \add branches of\add* thornbushes. \add They did those things in order to ridicule him by pretending that he was a king\add*.
\v 18 Then they greeted him \add like they would greet a king, in order to ridicule him\add*, saying, “Hooray for the King \add who rules\add* the Jews!”
\v 19 They repeatedly struck his head with a reed and spat on him. By kneeling down, they \add pretended to honor\add* him.
\v 20 When they had finished ridiculing him, they pulled off the purple robe. They put his own clothes on him, and then they led him outside \add of the city\add* in order to nail him to a cross.
\s1 After they crucified Jesus the soldiers gambled for his clothing.
\sr Mark 15:21-24
\p
\v 21 \add After Jesus carried his cross a short distance\add*, a man named Simon from Cyrene \add city came along\add*. He was the father of Alexander and Rufus. He was passing by while he was returning \add home\add* from outside \add the city. The soldiers\add* compelled Simon to carry the cross \add for Jesus\add*.
\v 22 They brought them both to a place that they \add call\add* Golgotha. That name means, ❛a place \add like\add* a skull❜.
\v 23 Then they tried to give Jesus wine that was {that they} mixed with \add medicine called\add* myrrh. \add They wanted him to drink it so that he would not feel so much pain when they crucified him\add*. But he did not drink it.
\v 24 \add Some\add* of the \add soldiers took his clothes\add*. Then they nailed him to a cross. Afterwards, they divided his clothes among themselves by gambling with \add something like\add* dice. They did this \add in order to determine\add* which \add piece of clothing\add* each one would get.
\s1 People passing by, as well as the Jewish leaders and two criminals crucified with Jesus, insulted him.
\sr Mark 15:25-32
\p
\v 25 It was nine o'clock in the morning when they crucified him.
\v 26 They \add attached to the cross above Jesus' head\add* a sign on which it had been written {someone had written} the reason why \add they were nailing him to the cross\add*. \add But all\add* that it said was, “The King of the Jews.”
\v 27-28 They also nailed to crosses two men who were bandits. They nailed one to a cross at the right side \add of Jesus\add* and one to a cross at the left side \add of Jesus\add*.
\v 29 The people who were passing by insulted him by shaking their heads as \add if here were an evil man\add*. They said, “Aha! You said that you would destroy the Temple and then you would build it again within three days.
\v 30 \add If you could do that, then\add* rescue yourself by coming down from the cross!”
\v 31 The chief priests, along with the men who taught the \add Jewish\add* laws, also \add wanted to\add* make fun of Jesus. So they said to each other, “He \add claims to have\add* saved others \add from their sicknesses\add* [IRO] but he cannot save himself!
\v 32 He said, I am the Messiah, I am the King who \add rules the people of\add* Israel. \add If his words are true\add*, he should come down now from the cross! Then we will believe \add him!\add*” The \add two\add* men who were crucified beside him also insulted him.
\s1 As several women who had accompanied Jesus watched, he died, after which the Temple curtain split into two parts and the Roman officer pronounced that Jesus was the Son of God.
\sr Mark 15:33-41
\p
\v 33 At noon the whole land became dark, \add and it stayed dark\add* until three o'clock in the afternoon.
\v 34 At three o'clock Jesus shouted loudly, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” That means, “My God, my God, why have you deserted me?”
\v 35 When some of the people who were standing there heard \add the word ❛Eloi❜, misunderstanding it\add*, they said, “Listen! He is calling for \add the prophet\add* Elijah!”
\v 36 One of them ran and filled a sponge with sour wine. He placed it on \add the tip of\add* a reed, and then he \add held it\add* up for \add Jesus\add* to suck out \add the wine that was in\add* it. \add While he was doing that, someone\add* said, “Wait! Let's see whether Elijah will come to take him down \add from the cross!\add*”
\v 37 And then, after Jesus shouted loudly, he stopped breathing \add and died\add*.
\v 38 \add At that moment\add* the \add heavy thick\add* curtain that closed off \add the most holy place in\add* the Temple split into two pieces from top to bottom. \add That showed that ordinary people could now go into the presence of God\add*.
\v 39 The officer who supervised the soldiers \add who nailed Jesus to the cross\add* was standing in front of Jesus. When he saw how Jesus died, he exclaimed, “Truly, this man was ◄the Son of God/the man who was also God►!”
\v 40-41 There were also some women there, watching these events from a distance. They had accompanied Jesus when he was in Galilee \add district\add*, and they had provided what he needed. They had come with him to Jerusalem. Among those women was Mary from Magdala \add town\add*. There was \add another\add* Mary, who was the mother of the younger James and of Joses. There was also Salome.
\s1 Several women watched as Joseph and others buried Jesus' body in a cave after getting permission from Pilate.
\sr Mark 15:42-47
\p
\v 42-43 When evening was near, \add a man named\add* Joseph from Arimathea \add town came there\add*. He was a member of the \add Jewish\add* council, one whom everyone respected. He was also one of those who had been waiting expectantly for the \add time when\add* God \add would send\add* his king to begin to rule. \add He knew that, according to Jewish law, people's bodies had to be buried\add* {\add someone had to bury people's bodies\add*} \add on the day they died. He also realized that\add* it was the day when \add people\add* prepared \add things for\add* ◄\add the Jewish day of rest/the Sabbath\add*►, \add and that the Sabbath would start when the sun set\add*. So he became courageous and went to Pilate and asked Pilate \add to permit him to take\add* the body of Jesus \add down from the cross and bury it immediately\add*.
\v 44 Pilate was surprised \add when he heard that\add* Jesus was already dead. So he summoned the officer who was in charge of the soldiers \add who crucified Jesus\add*, and he asked him if \add Jesus\add* had already died.
\v 45 When the officer told \add Pilate that Jesus was dead\add*, Pilate allowed Joseph \add to take away\add* the body.
\v 46 After Joseph bought a linen cloth, he \add and others\add* took \add Jesus' body down from the cross\add*. They wrapped it in the linen cloth and laid it in a tomb that \add previously\add* had been dug out of the rock \add cliff\add*. Then they rolled a \add huge flat\add* stone in front of the entrance to the tomb.
\v 47 Mary \add from\add* Magdala \add village\add* and Mary the mother of Joses were watching where Jesus' \add body\add* was placed {where they placed Jesus' \add body\add*}.
\c 16
\s1 Two days later several women were astonished to find Jesus' tomb empty.
\sr Mark 16:1-8
\p
\v 1 \add On Saturday evening\add* when ◄the Sabbath/the Jewish day of rest► had ended, Mary \add from\add* Magdala \add village\add*, Mary the mother of the \add younger\add* James, and Salome bought fragrant ointment. \add The Jews had a custom of\add* anointing bodies \add before they buried them, and the women wanted to follow this custom\add*.
\v 2 So very early on Sunday, \add just after\add* the sun rose, they \add took the fragrant ointment\add* and started toward the tomb.
\v 3 \add While they were going there\add*, they were saying to each other, “Who will roll away for us the stone \add that blocks\add* the entrance of the tomb?”
\v 4 \add After they arrived\add*, they looked up and saw that the stone had \add already\add* been rolled away {that someone had \add already\add* rolled away the stone}. \add They were surprised because it\add* would have been difficult to move such a huge stone.
\v 5 They entered the tomb and saw \add an angel who looked like\add* a young man. He was sitting at the right side \add of the cave\add*. He was wearing a \add shining\add* white robe. As a result, they were astonished.
\v 6 The young man said to them, “Do not be astonished! I \add know that\add* you are looking for Jesus, the man from Nazareth \add town\add*, who was nailed to a cross {whom they nailed to a cross}. But he has become alive again! He is not here! Look! \add Here is\add* the place where they placed his \add body\add*.
\v 7 But, instead \add of remaining here\add*, go and tell his disciples. Particularly \add be sure\add* that you tell Peter. Tell them, \add Jesus\add* is going ahead of you to Galilee \add district\add*, and you will see him there, just like he told you \add previously!\add*”
\v 8 The women went outside and ran from the tomb. They were trembling \add because they were afraid\add*, and they were astonished. But they did not say anything to anyone \add about this\add* while they were going, because they were afraid.
\s1 Jesus rebuked the disciples for not believing the reports of his being alive again.
\sr Mark 16:9-14
\p [\v 9 When Jesus became alive \add again\add* early on Sunday morning, he appeared first to Mary \add from\add* Magdala \add town\add*. She was the woman from whom he had \add previously\add* expelled seven evil spirits.
\v 10 She went to those who had been with \add Jesus\add*, while they were mourning and crying. She told them \add what she had seen\add*.
\v 11 But when she told them that Jesus was alive again and that she had seen him, they refused to believe it.
\v 12 Later \add that day\add*, Jesus appeared to two of \add his disciples\add* while they were walking \add from Jerusalem to their homes in\add* the \add surrounding\add* area. \add But they did not recognize him quickly because\add* he looked very different.
\v 13 \add After they recognized him\add*, those two went back \add to Jerusalem. They told his other followers what had happened\add*, but they did not believe it.
\v 14 Later he appeared to the eleven \add apostles\add* while they were eating. He rebuked them because they had stubbornly refused to believe \add the reports of\add* those who saw him after he had become alive again.
\s1 Miracles began to happen after Jesus instructed his disciples to preach the gospel everywhere and he told them that miracles would accompany their ministry.
\sr Mark 16:15-20
\p
\v 15 \add Later\add* he said to them, “Go into the whole world and preach the good message to everyone!
\v 16 Everyone who believes \add your message\add* and who is baptized will be saved {\add God\add* will save}. But everyone who does not believe it will be condemned {\add God\add* will condemn}.
\v 17 Those who believe \add my good message\add* will perform miracles. Specifically, by my power they will expel evil spirits. They will speak in languages that they have not learned.
\v 18 If they pick up snakes \add accidentally\add* or if they drink any poisonous \add liquid accidentally\add*, they will not be hurt. \add Whenever\add* they put their hands on sick \add people in order that God will heal them\add*, those sick people will become well.”
\p
\v 19 After the Lord Jesus had said this to \add the disciples, he was taken\add* {\add God\add* took him} up into heaven. Then he sat down on his throne beside God \add to rule with him\add*.
\v 20 \add As for the disciples\add*, they went out \add from Jerusalem, and then they preached everywhere. Wherever they went\add*, the Lord enabled them to perform miracles. \add By doing that\add*, he showed people that God's message is true.
