\c 1
\p
\v 1 \add I am\add* Habakkuk, a prophet. This is the \add conversation I had with Yahweh\add* that was given to me in a vision.
\s1 Habakkuk's first complaint
\q1
\v 2 \add I said\add*, “Yahweh, how long must I continue to call \add to you\add* for help
\q2 before you respond?
\q1 I cry out to you \add for help\add*, saying that \add people are acting\add* violently \add everywhere\add*,
\q2 but you do not rescue us!
\q1
\v 3 ◄Must I/I do not want to► continue seeing people doing what is unjust [RHQ].
\q2 Why do you not punish people who are doing what is wrong [RHQ]?
\q1 I see people destroying things and \add acting\add* violently.
\q2 There is fighting and quarreling \add everywhere\add*.
\q1
\v 4 No one obeys laws [PRS],
\q2 and judges [PRS] never do what is fair/just.
\q1 Wicked people always defeat the righteous people \add in the courts\add*,
\q2 with the result that matters are never decided fairly/justly.”
\s1 Yahweh's reply
\q1
\v 5 \add Yahweh replied to me\add*,
\q1 “\add I know that what you say is true, but\add* look around at \add what is happening in\add* the other nations;
\q2 \add if you look\add*, you will be amazed,
\q1 because I am doing something during this time that you would not believe \add would happen\add*,
\q2 even if someone told you about it.
\q1
\v 6 The soldiers of Babylonia are fierce/cruel and swift.
\q2 And now I am causing them \add to become very powerful\add*;
\q1 they will march across the entire earth
\q2 and conquer \add many\add* other countries.
\q1
\v 7 They are people whom \add others\add* fear very much [DOU],
\q2 and they do whatever they want to,
\q2 paying no attention to the laws of other countries.
\q1
\v 8 The horses \add that pull their chariots\add* go faster than leopards,
\q2 and they are fiercer than wolves are in the evening.
\q1 The horses on which the soldiers ride gallop swiftly;
\q2 the soldiers riding them come from distant places.
\q1 They are like [SIM] eagles that swoop down to \add snatch and\add* kill small animals.
\q1
\v 9 As they ride along,
\q2 they are determined to act violently.
\q1 They advance like [SIM] a wind from the desert,
\q2 gathering prisoners that are as \add numerous as grains of\add* sand.
\q1
\v 10 They make fun of kings and princes \add of other countries\add*,
\q2 and they ridicule all the cities that have high walls around them.
\q1 They pile dirt \add outside those walls\add*
\q2 \add in order to climb up\add* and capture those cities.
\q1
\v 11 They rush past like the wind,
\q2 and then they go \add to attack other cities\add*,
\q1 But they are very guilty,
\q2 because \add they think that\add* their own power is their god.”
\s1 Habakkuk's second complaint
\q1
\v 12 \add Then I said\add*, “Yahweh, you have certainly [RHQ] always/forever been God.
\q2 You are my Holy one; you will not die.
\q1 So \add why\add* have you appointed those men \add from Babylonia\add* to judge and get rid of us?
\q2 You are like [MET] a huge rock \add under which we are protected/safe\add*,
\q2 so why have you sent them to punish us?
\q1
\v 13 You [SYN] are pure, and you cannot endure looking at what is evil,
\q2 so why are you ignoring men who are treacherous?
\q1 Why do you do nothing
\q2 \add to punish\add* those wicked men \add from Babylonia\add*
\q2 who destroy people who are more righteous than they are?
\q1
\v 14 \add Do you consider that\add* we are like fish in the sea,
\q2 or like other creatures in the sea, that have no ruler?
\q1
\v 15 \add The soldiers of Babylonia think that we are fish\add* [RHQ] for them to pull out of the sea with hooks
\q2 or to catch in their nets,
\q2 while they rejoice and celebrate.
\q1
\v 16 If they catch us, they will \add worship\add* their weapons [MET] with which they captured us and offer sacrifices to them
\q2 and burn incense in front of them!
\q1 \add They will say\add* ‘Those weapons have enabled us to become rich and be able to eat expensive food.’
\q1
\v 17 \add Will you allow\add* them to continue \add to conquer people\add* [MET] forever?
\q2 \add Will you allow\add* them to destroy people of other nations without their acting mercifully \add toward anyone\add*?”
\c 2
\q1
\v 1 \add After I said that, I said to myself\add*, “I will climb up into my watchtower,
\q2 and stand there at my guard post.
\q1 I will wait there to find out what Yahweh will say,
\q2 what he will reply to what I have complained about.”
\s1 Yahweh's second reply
\p
\v 2 Then Yahweh replied to me,
\q1 “Write plainly on tablets \add what I am revealing to you in\add* this vision,
\q2 \add and then read it to a messenger\add*
\q2 in order that he can run with it \add to tell it to\add* other people.
\q1
\v 3 In this vision \add I will be talking about things that will happen\add* in the future.
\q1 Now is not the time when those things will happen,
\q2 but they certainly will happen,
\q2 and when they occur, they will occur quickly,
\q2 and they will not be delayed.
\q1 Now you \add want those things to happen immediately, but\add* they are not happening.
\q2 But wait patiently for them \add to happen!\add*
\b
\q1
\v 4 Think about the proud \add people of Babylonia\add*
\q2 They are certainly not doing what is righteous.
\q1 But people who are righteous will live
\q2 because they faithfully \add do what I want them to do\add*.
\q1
\v 5 If people \add trust in their wealth\add*, they will deceive themselves,
\q2 and proud people are never able to rest.
\q1 \add It is as though\add* the greedy people \add of Babylonia open their mouths\add* as wide as the place where dead people are,
\q1 and they never have enough,
\q2 like \add the place where\add* dead people go never has enough dead people [PRS].
\q1 The \add armies of Babylonia\add* conquer many nations for themselves,
\q2 and capture all their people.
\q1
\v 6 But \add soon\add* all those \add whom they have captured\add* will ridicule \add the soldiers from Babylonia\add*
\q1 They will make fun of them, saying,
\q2 ‘Terrible things will happen to you who have stolen things \add from other countries\add*
\q1 You got many things by forcing people to give them to you.
\q2 \add But you certainly will not keep those things\add* for a long time [RHQ]!’
\q1
\v 7 Suddenly those whom you ◄oppressed/treated cruelly► will rise up
\q2 and cause you to tremble,
\q2 and they will take away all the things that you have stolen from them.
\q1
\v 8 You stole things from the people of many nations.
\q1 You murdered [MTY] people of many people-groups,
\q2 and you destroyed their land and their cities.
\q1 So those who are still alive will steal valuable things from you.
\b
\q1
\v 9 Terrible things will happen to you \add people of Babylonia\add* who build big houses
\q2 with money that you got by forcing others to give it to you.
\q1 You are proud and you think that your houses will be safe
\q2 because you have built them in places where you can easily defend them.
\q1
\v 10 But because you have destroyed others,
\q2 you have caused your family [MTY] to be shamed/disgraced,
\q2 and you yourselves will be killed.
\q1
\v 11 \add It is as though\add* the stones in the walls \add of your houses\add* cry out to accuse you,
\q2 and \add it is as though\add* the beams \add in your ceilings\add* also say the same things.
\b
\q1
\v 12 Terrible things will happen to you \add people of Babylonia\add* who kill people [MTY] in order to build cities,
\q2 cities that you build by using money that you have gotten by committing crimes.
\q1
\v 13 But the Almighty Commander of the armies of angels has [RHQ] declared that everything that is built by people who do things like that \add will be destroyed by\add* fire;
\q2 they will have worked hard uselessly.
\q1
\v 14 But \add in contrast\add*, like [SIM] the oceans are filled with water,
\q2 the earth will be filled with people who know that Yahweh is very great.
\b
\q1
\v 15 Terrible things will happen to you \add people of Babylonia\add*
\q2 who cause people who live in nearby countries to become drunk.
\q1 You force them to drink a lot of wine from wineskins
\q2 \add until they are drunk and then they walk around\add* naked
\q2 in order that you will be happy when you see that.
\q1
\v 16 But you are the ones who \add soon\add* will be disgraced instead of being honored.
\q2 \add It will be as though you are forced to\add* drink \add a lot of wine\add* in order that you will also stagger around, drunk.
\q1 You will drink the wine \add that symbolizes that Yahweh will punish you\add*,
\q2 and he will cause you to be disgraced instead of being greatly respected anymore.
\q1
\v 17 You did violent [PRS] things to the people in Lebanon,
\q2 and you killed the wild animals there,
\q1 but you will be punished severely for doing that.
\q1 You have killed [MTY] many people
\q2 and you have destroyed their lands and their cities.
\b
\q1
\v 18 \add You people of Babylonia need to know that your\add* idols are completely [RHQ] useless,
\q2 because it is people who made them.
\q1 Statues that have been carved or made in a mold deceive you.
\q2 Those who trust in idols
\q2 are trusting in things that they themselves created,
\q1 things that cannot speak!
\q1
\v 19 Terrible things will happen to you who say to lifeless idols that are made of wood,
\q2 ‘Wake up!’
\q1 Idols certainly cannot [RHQ] tell you what you should do;
\q2 they \add look nice/beautiful because\add* they are covered with silver and gold,
\q2 but they are not alive.
\q1
\v 20 But Yahweh is in his holy temple;
\q2 everyone on the earth should be silent in his presence.”
\c 3
\s1 A prayer sung by Habakkuk
\p
\v 1-2 Yahweh, I have heard about you;
\q1 I revere you because of all the amazing things that you have done.
\q2 In our time, do again some of those things that you did long ago!
\q1 Even when you are angry \add with us\add*,
\q2 act mercifully \add toward us!\add*
\b
\q1
\v 3 \add In the vision, I saw\add* God, the Holy One, coming from the Teman \add district in Edom\add*;
\q2 \add and I also saw\add* him coming from the Paran hills \add in the Sinai area\add*.
\q1 His glory filled the sky,
\q2 and the earth was full of \add people who were\add* praising him.
\q1
\v 4 His glory was like [SIM] a sunrise;
\q2 rays flashed from his hands
\q2 where he hides his power.
\q1
\v 5 He sent plagues in front of him,
\q2 and \add other\add* plagues came behind him.
\q1
\v 6 When he stopped, the earth shook.
\q1 When he looked at the nations,
\q2 all the people trembled.
\q1 The hills and mountains that have existed for a very long time [HYP] collapsed and crumbled.
\q2 He is the one who exists eternally/forever!
\q1
\v 7 \add In the vision\add* I saw the \add people who live in\add* tents in the Cushan \add region\add* being afflicted,
\q2 and the people in the Midian \add region\add* trembling.
\b
\q1
\v 8 Yahweh, was it because you were angry with the rivers and streams that you struck them?
\q1 Did the seas cause you to be furious,
\q2 with the result that you rode through them with horses that were pulling chariots
\q2 that enabled you to defeat them?
\q1
\v 9 \add It was as though\add* you uncovered your bow,
\q2 took arrows from your quiver, \add and prepared to shoot them\add*.
\q1 Then \add with lightning\add* you split open the earth,
\q2 and streams burst forth.
\q1
\v 10 \add It is as though\add* the mountains saw you \add doing that\add*,
\q2 and they trembled.
\q1 The water rushed by in floods;
\q2 \add it was as though\add* the deep ocean roared and caused its waves to rise up high.
\b
\q1
\v 11 The sun and moon stopped moving in the sky
\q2 while your \add lightning\add* flashed past like a swift arrow,
\q2 and your glittering spear flashed.
\q1
\v 12 Being very angry [DOU], you walked across the earth
\q2 and trampled the \add armies of many\add* nations.
\q1
\v 13 But you also went to rescue us, your people,
\q2 and to save the \add king\add* (Or, \add people\add*) whom you had chosen [MTY].
\q1 You crushed the leader [MTY] of those wicked people
\q2 and stripped off his clothes, from his head to his foot.
\q1
\v 14 With his own spear you destroyed the leader of those soldiers who rushed like [SIM] a whirlwind to \add attack and\add* scatter us,
\q2 thinking that they could conquer us \add Israelis\add* easily.
\q1
\v 15 You walked through the sea with your horses \add to destroy our enemies\add*,
\q2 and caused the waves to surge.
\b
\q1
\v 16 When I saw that vision,
\q2 my heart pounded
\q1 and my lips quivered
\q2 \add because I became afraid\add*.
\q1 My legs became weak
\q2 and I shook, \add because I was terrified\add*.
\q1 But I will wait quietly for the people \add of Babylonia\add*, those who invaded our country, to experience disasters!
\q1
\v 17 \add Therefore\add*,
\q1 even if there are no blossoms on the fig trees,
\q2 and there are no grapes on the grapevines,
\q1 and even if there are no olives growing on the olive trees,
\q2 and there are no crops in the fields,
\q1 and even if the flocks \add of sheep and goats\add* die in the fields,
\q2 and there are no cattle in the stalls/barns,
\q1
\v 18 I will rejoice because \add I know\add* Yahweh.
\q2 I will be joyful because Yahweh my God is the one who saves me!
\q1
\v 19 Yahweh the Lord is the one who causes me to be strong;
\q2 he enables me to climb \add ◄safely/without falling►\add* in the \add rocky\add* mountains, like [SIM] a deer does.
\b
\q (This message is for the choir director:
\q2 \add When this prayer is sung, it is to be accompanied by people playing\add* stringed instruments.)
