\v 1 \add I am\add* Nahum, from Elkosh \add village\add*. This is a message about Nineveh \add city, the capital of Assyria\add*, that was given to me in a vision \add by Yahweh\add*.
\s1 Yahweh is angry with the people of Nineveh
\q1
\v 2 Yahweh our God ◄is jealous/does not want people to worship any other god►.
\q2 He is very angry \add with those who worship other gods\add*,
\q1 and he gets revenge [DOU] \add on all those who oppose him\add* [DOU].
\q1
\v 3 Yahweh does not quickly become angry;
\q2 but he is very powerful,
\q1 and he will certainly punish [LIT] those who have done evil things [MTY].
\q1 He shows his power by sending whirlwinds and storms,
\q2 and clouds are like [MET] the dust \add stirred up by\add* his feet.
\q1
\v 4 When he commands oceans and rivers to become dry,
\q2 they dry up.
\q1 He causes \add the grass in the fields in\add* the Bashan \add region\add* and \add on the slopes of\add* Carmel \add Mountain\add* to wither,
\q2 and causes the flowers in Lebanon to fade.
\q1
\v 5 When he appears, \add it is as though\add* the mountains shake and the hills melt;
\q2 the earth quakes and the people on the earth tremble.
\q1
\v 6 There is no one [RHQ] who can resist him when he becomes extremely angry;
\q2 there is no one [RHQ] who can survive when his anger is very hot.
\q1 When he is very angry, \add it is as though\add* his anger is like [SIM] a blazing fire,
\q2 and \add it is as though\add* mountains are shattered into pieces.
\b
\q1
\v 7 But he is good;
\q2 he protects us his people when we experience troubles.
\q1 He takes care of those who trust in him.
\q1
\v 8 But he will get rid of his enemies;
\q2 he will be to them like [MET] a flood that destroys everything.
\q1 He will chase his enemies
\q2 into the darkness \add of the place where the dead are\add*.
\b
\q1
\v 9 So, it is useless [RHQ] for you \add people of Nineveh\add* to plot against Yahweh.
\q2 He will not need to strike you two times to destroy you;
\q2 he will destroy you \add by striking you only once\add*.
\q1
\v 10 \add It will be as though his enemies\add* are tangled in thorns,
\q2 and they will stagger like people who have drunk a lot of wine.
\q2 They will be burned up like [SIM] a fire completely burns up stubble/straw.
\b
\q1
\v 11 In Nineveh \add city\add* there was a man who advised people to do very wicked things against Yahweh.
\p
\v 12 But this is what Yahweh says about \add you Israeli people\add*:
\q1 “Although the people of Assyria have very many people and their army is very powerful,
\q2 they will be destroyed and will disappear.
\q1 \add I say to my people in Judah\add*,
\q2 I have already punished you,
\q2 but I will not punish you again.
\q1
\v 13 Now I will cause the \add people of Assyria\add* to no longer control/oppress you [MET];
\q2 \add it will be as though\add* I will tear off the shackles/chains on your \add hands and feet\add*.”
\b
\q1
\v 14 And this is what Yahweh also declares about you people of Nineveh:
\q2 “You will not have any descendants who will continue to have your family names.
\q1 And I will destroy all the statues of your gods
\q2 that were carved or formed in molds.
\q1 I will \add cause you to be killed and\add* sent to your graves,
\q2 because you are vile/despicable!”
\b
\q1
\v 15 \add You people of Judah\add*, look! A messenger will be coming across the mountains,
\q2 and he [SYN] will be bringing good news you.
\q2 He will be declaring \add that you will now have\add* peace \add because Assyria will have been conquered\add*.
\q1 So, celebrate your festivals,
\q2 and do what you solemnly promised to do \add when your enemies were threatening to attack you\add*,
\q1 because your wicked \add enemies\add* will not invade your country again,
\q2 because they will be completely destroyed.
\c 2
\s1 Nineveh will be destroyed
\q1
\v 1 \add You people of\add* [APO] Nineveh,
\q2 your enemies are coming to attack you.
\q2 So place guards on the tops of the walls around the city!
\q2 Guard the roads \add into the city\add*
\q2 Get ready to fight!
\q2 Gather your troops/soldiers [MTY] together!
\b
\q1
\v 2 Even though your soldiers have destroyed the descendants of [MTY] Jacob,
\q2 Yahweh will cause them to be honored again.
\q1 Invaders \add from your country\add* have ruined the grapevines in Israel,
\q2 but the Israelis will grow and produce grapes again.
\b
\q1
\v 3 The shields of \add the enemy soldiers who are coming to attack you\add* will shine red \add as the sun shines on them\add*,
\q2 and they will wear bright red uniforms.
\q1 The metal of their chariot \add wheels\add* will flash when they line up \add before the battle\add*,
\q2 and their soldiers will lift up their cypress/pine spears and wave them.
\q1
\v 4 Their chariots will dash through the streets \add of Nineveh\add*
\q2 and rush furiously through the plazas.
\q1 Going as quick as lightning,
\q2 they will resemble flaming torches.
\b
\q1
\v 5 \add Meanwhile\add*, your king will summon his officers
\q2 who will stumble as they try to come quickly.
\q1 They will dash to the \add city\add* wall,
\q2 holding their shields to protect themselves.
\q1
\v 6 But, the gates \add of the dams\add* on the rivers will be thrown open \add by enemy soldiers\add*,
\q2 and the flood will cause the palace to collapse.
\q1
\v 7 The queen will have her clothes stripped off her \add by enemy soldiers\add*,
\q2 and her slave girls will moan like doves
\q2 and beat their breasts \add to show that they are very sad\add*.
\q1
\v 8 \add The people will rush from\add* Nineveh
\q2 like [SIM] water rushes from a broken dam.
\q1 \add The officials\add* will shout, “Stop! Stop!”
\q2 but the people will not even look back \add as they run away\add*.
\q1
\v 9 \add The enemy attackers say to each other\add*, “Seize the silver!
\q2 Grab the gold!
\q1 There is a huge amount of very valuable things in the city,
\q2 more valuable things than anyone can count!”
\q1
\v 10 Soon \add everything valuable in\add* the city will be seized or ruined.
\q2 People will be trembling, with the result that they will not be able to fight.
\q2 Their faces will all become pale.
\b
\q1
\v 11 \add After that happens, people will say\add*,
\q1 “What happened to [RHQ] that \add great city of Nineveh\add*?
\q2 \add It was like\add* [MER] a den full of young lions,
\q1 where the male and female lions lived and fed the young ones.
\q1
\v 12 \add The soldiers in Nineveh were like\add* [MET] lions that killed or strangled \add other animals\add*
\q2 \add and brought the meat\add* to their dens.”
\b
\q1
\v 13 The Almighty Commander of the armies of angels says \add to the people of Nineveh\add*,
\q1 “I am opposed to you;
\q2 I will cause your chariots to \add be burned in fires and\add* go up in smoke.
\q1 Your young men will be killed with swords.
\q2 \add Your soldiers\add* will never again conquer \add other nations\add*
\q2 and seize their valuable possessions.
\q1 Your messengers will never again take messages \add to other nations, demanding that their armies surrender to them\add*.”
\c 3
\s1 Nineveh will be punished
\q1
\v 1 Terrible things will happen to Nineveh,
\q2 that city \add that is full of people who\add* murder [MTY] and lie.
\q1 The city is full of things that were seized \add from other countries by their soldiers\add*;
\q2 \add their armies\add* continually [LIT] have acted brutally towards people whom they conquered.
\q1
\v 2 But \add now listen to the enemy soldiers coming to attack Nineveh\add*;
\q1 listen to them cracking their whips,
\q2 and listen to the rattle of their chariot wheels!
\q1 \add Listen to\add* their galloping horses
\q2 and their chariots as they bounce along!
\q1
\v 3 Look at their flashing swords and glittering spears
\q2 as the horsemen race forward!
\q1 Many \add people of Nineveh\add* will be killed;
\q1 there will be piles of corpses,
\q2 with the result that people will stumble over them.
\q1
\v 4 All \add that will happen\add* because Nineveh is like [MET] a beautiful prostitute
\q2 \add who lures men to where they will be ruined\add*;
\q1 Nineveh is a beautiful city
\q2 which has attracted/enticed \add people of\add* other nations \add to come there\add*.
\q1 \add The people of Nineveh\add* taught those people of other nations \add rituals of\add* magic,
\q2 and caused them to become their slaves.
\q1
\v 5 So the Almighty Commander of the armies of angels says to \add the people of Nineveh\add*:
\q2 “I am your enemy,
\q1 and I will \add cause the people in\add* other nations to see you \add completely\add* humiliated
\q2 like [MET] \add women who have committed adultery are humiliated by\add* having their skirts lifted high,
\q2 \add with the result that\add* people can see their naked \add bodies\add*.
\q1
\v 6 I will cause rubbish/garbage to be thrown at you;
\q2 I will show others that I despise you very much,
\q2 and I will cause you to be publicly ridiculed.
\q1
\v 7 All those who see you will turn their backs to you and say,
\q1 Nineveh is ruined,
\q2 but absolutely no one [RHQ] will mourn for it.
\q2 No one will regret Nineveh being destroyed!”
\s1 The people of Nineveh will not be able to defend themselves
\q1
\v 8 Your city is certainly [RHQ] no safer than Thebes \add city\add* was.
\q2 Thebes was an important city beside the Nile \add River\add*;
\q2 the river was like [SIM] a wall that protected the city [DOU].
\q1
\v 9 \add The rulers of\add* Ethiopia and Egypt helped Thebes;
\q2 there was no limit to their power.
\q1 \add The governments of the nearby countries of\add* Put and Libya were also allies of Thebes.
\q1
\v 10 But Thebes was captured,
\q2 and its people were ◄exiled/forced to go to other countries►.
\q1 Their babies were dashed to pieces in the streets of the city.
\q1 \add Enemy soldiers\add* ◄cast lots/threw small marked stones► to decide who would get each official in Thebes \add to become his slave\add*.
\q2 All the leaders of Thebes were fastened/tied by chains.
\q1
\v 11 You \add people of Nineveh\add* will similarly become dazed and drunk,
\q2 and you will search for places to hide
\q2 to escape from your enemies.
\b
\q1
\v 12 \add Your enemies will cause\add* the walls around your city to fall down
\q2 like [SIM] the first figs that fall from fig trees \add each year\add*.
\q1 \add Your city will be captured easily, like\add* [MET] figs that fall into the mouths [HYP] of those who shake the fig trees.
\q1
\v 13 Look at your soldiers!
\q2 They will be \add as weak/helpless as\add* [MET] women!
\q1 The gates of your city will be opened wide
\q2 \add to allow\add* your enemies \add to enter them\add*,
\q2 and then the bars of those gates will be burned.
\b
\q1
\v 14 Store up water \add now to use when\add* your enemies surround the city!
\q2 Repair the forts!
\q1 Dig up clay and trample it \add to make it soft\add*,
\q2 and put it into molds to make bricks \add to repair the walls\add*
\q1
\v 15 Nevertheless, \add your enemies\add* will burn your \add city\add*;
\q2 they will kill you with their swords;
\q2 they will kill you like [SIM] locusts destroy crops.
\q1
\v 16 In your city there are now very many merchants;
\q2 \add it seems that\add* there are more of them than there are stars.
\q1 But \add when your city is being destroyed, those merchants will take the valuable things and disappear\add*
\q2 like [SIM] locusts that strip the leaves from plants and then fly away.
\q1
\v 17 Your leaders are also like a swarm of [SIM] locusts [DOU]
\q2 that crowd together on the stone fences/walls on a cold day,
\q1 and then fly away when the sun comes up,
\q2 and no one knows where they have gone.
\b
\q1
\v 18 King of Assyria, your officials will all be dead [EUP];
\q2 your important people will lie down and rest \add forever\add*.
\q1 Your people will be scattered over the mountains,
\q2 and there will no one to gather them together.
\q1
\v 19 You are like someone who has a wound that cannot be healed;
\q2 it will be a wound that causes him to die.
\q1 And all those who hear about what has happened to you will clap their hands \add joyfully\add*.
\q2 \add They will say\add*, “Everyone has [RHQ] suffered because he continually acted very cruelly toward us.”
