\c 1
\p
\v 1 \add I am\add* Hosea, the son of Beeri. Yahweh gave me these messages \add at various times\add* during the years that Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah were the kings of Judah, and Jeroboam the son of Jehoash was the king of Israel.
\s1 Hosea's wife and children
\p
\v 2 When Yahweh first began to give messages to me \add to tell to the people of Israel\add*, he said to me, “Go and marry a prostitute, in order that \add some of\add* her children will be born as a result of her having sex with men to whom she is not married. That will illustrate how the people of Israel have turned away from me and worship ◄idols/other gods►.”
\v 3 So I married Gomer, the daughter of Diblaim. She became pregnant and gave birth to my son.
\p
\v 4 Yahweh said to me, “Give him the name Jezreel, \add which means ❛God scatters❜\add*, because I will soon punish the descendants [MTY] of \add King\add* Jehu \add by scattering them\add*, because he killed many of my people at Jezreel \add town\add*. \add Some day\add* I will end the kingdom of Israel,
\v 5 by destroying the power [MTY] of \add the army of\add* Israel in Jezreel Valley.”
\p
\v 6 \add Later\add* Gomer became pregnant again, and she gave birth to a daughter. Yahweh said to me “Give her the name Lo-ruhamah, \add which means\add* ❛\add not loved❜\add*, because I will no longer show that I love the people [MET] of Israel, and I will not forgive them \add for the sins that they have committed\add*.
\v 7 But I will show that I love the people [MTY] of Judah \add by saving them from their enemies\add*. However, it will not be by weapons and armies or horses and chariots that I will save them. Instead, it will be by the power that I, Yahweh their God, have.”
\p
\v 8 After Gomer had ◄weaned/stopped breast-feeding► Lo-ruhamah, she became pregnant again, and she gave birth to another son.
\v 9 Yahweh said “Give him the name Lo-ammi, \add which means\add* ❛\add not my people❜\add*, because the people of Israel are no longer my people, and I am not their God.
\p
\v 10 But \add some day\add* the people of Israel will be \add as numerous\add* as [SIM] the grains of sand on the seashore; no one will be able to count them. Now I am saying to them, You are not my people, but then people will say to them, You are the children of God who is all-powerful.
\v 11 At that time, the people of Judah and the people of Israel will unite. They will appoint one leader for all of them, and they will return from the countries to which they have been ◄exiled/forced to go►. That will be a great time; Jezreel \add also means\add* ❛\add God plants❜\add*, \add and it will be as though God will plant them in this country again\add*.”
\c 2
\p
\v 1 At that time, you will say to your fellow-Israeli men, “\add You are God's\add* people,” and you will say to your fellow-Israeli women, “You are ones whom God loves.”
\s1 Israel will be punished and later restored
\q1
\v 2 \add Yahweh also said to me\add*, “I want you to accuse the Israeli people.
\q2 \add It is as though\add* [MET] this nation is your mother,
\q1 but this nation is no longer \add as though it is\add* [MET] my wife,
\q2 and it is no longer \add as though\add* [MET] I am its husband.
\q1 Tell the Israeli people that they must stop \add acting like\add* a prostitute \add by worshiping other gods\add*;
\q2 they must stop showing by their behavior that they ◄are unfaithful to/have abandoned► \add me\add* [MET].
\q1
\v 3 If they do not do that,
\q2 I will not give them \add food and\add* clothes \add as a husband should give to his wife\add*;
\q1 I will take away those things,
\q2 and I will cause their nation to become \add as empty\add* as it was on the day that I \add brought their ancestors out of Egypt and caused them to become a nation\add* [MET].
\q1 I will cause their country to be like [SIM] a desert;
\q2 there will be no rain to water the ground [MET].
\q1
\v 4 I will not pity the people,
\q2 because they have \add abandoned me\add* as [MET] prostitutes abandon their husbands.
\q1
\v 5 Their parents are like prostitutes [MET]: They have been unfaithful \add to me\add*,
\q2 and they have done very disgraceful things.
\q1 They said, We will run to \add our idols/gods\add* who love us;
\q2 they are the ones who give us food and water
\q2 and wool and linen and \add olive\add* oil, and \add wine to\add* drink.
\q1
\v 6 So \add it will be as though\add* [MET] I am blocking their road with thornbushes,
\q1 and putting put a wall around them
\q2 so that they do not know which way to go.
\q1
\v 7 They will run to their idols/gods \add that they think\add* love them,
\q2 but they will not find them.
\q1 They will search for their false gods,
\q2 but they will not find them.
\q1 Then they will say, \add Perhaps\add* we should return to \add Yahweh\add*, whom we worshiped previously [MET],
\q2 because things were better for us then than they are now.
\q1
\v 8 But they do not realize that I, \add Yahweh\add*, am the one who gave them grain and wine and \add olive\add* oil;
\q2 I am the one who gave them silver and gold
\q1 which they used to worship Baal.
\q1
\v 9 Therefore I will return and take my grain from them when it is ripe.
\q2 I will take from them the wool and linen that I gave to them \add to make their clothes\add* [MTY].
\q1
\v 10 I will show those false gods/idols that what my people are doing is disgusting [MET],
\q2 and no one will be able to hinder me from \add punishing them\add*.
\q1
\v 11 I will cause their religious celebrations to cease:
\q2 The festivals that they celebrate every year and at every new moon and on their ◄Sabbath days/weekly days of rest►.
\q2 I will cause all their religious celebrations to cease.
\q1
\v 12 I will destroy all their grapevines and fig trees,
\q2 which they said were what their idols/gods who loved them paid them for worshiping those idols.
\q1 I will cause those places to become a desert,
\q2 and wild animals will eat the fruit \add that remains\add*.
\q1
\v 13 I will punish my people for all the times that they burned incense to \add honor\add* the idols of Baal.
\q1 They decorated themselves with rings and jewelry,
\q2 and they went to worship those false \add gods/idols\add* that \add they thought\add* [IRO] loved them,
\q2 but they abandoned/forgot me!
\q1 \add That is what I\add*, Yahweh, say.
\b
\q1
\v 14 But listen! \add Some day\add* I will persuade my people to worship me again;
\q2 I will lead them to the desert
\q2 and speak kindly to them.
\q1
\v 15 I will give their vineyards back to them,
\q2 and I will cause Achor Valley, \add which means valley of trouble\add*, to become a valley where they will confidently expect \add me to do good things for them\add*.
\q1 They will ◄respond to/want to please► me there
\q2 like they did long ago,
\q2 when I freed them from \add being slaves in\add* Egypt.
\b
\q1
\v 16 At that time,
\q2 they will say to me, \add It is as though\add* [MET] you are our husband.
\q2 They will not say that I am their master, \add like they considered that Baal was\add*.
\q1
\v 17 I will not allow them to speak [MTY] the names of Baal;
\q2 they will never use those names again.
\q1
\v 18 At that time \add it will be as though\add* I will make an agreement
\q2 with all the wild animals and birds,
\q2 and \add even with\add* the little animals that crawl along the ground,
\q2 so that they will never harm my people \add again\add*.
\q1 And I will remove from their nation all the weapons \add for fighting battles\add*,
\q2 like swords and bows \add and arrows\add*.
\q1 The result will be that my people will live peacefully and safely,
\q2 and will not be afraid.
\q1
\v 19 I will cause them to be \add as though they are\add* [MET] my bride forever.
\q2 I will be righteous and fair/just;
\q2 I will faithfully love them and act kindly toward them.
\q1
\v 20 I will not abandon them,
\q2 and they will realize \add that I\add* Yahweh, \add have the power to do what I say that I will do.\add*
\b
\q1
\v 21 At that time, \add when they request me to do things for them\add*,
\q2 I will do those things.
\q1 When they request clouds and rain to cover their land,
\q2 I will speak to the clouds, and rain will fall on the earth,
\q1
\v 22 and grain will grow, and the vineyards and the olive trees will grow in Jezreel \add Valley\add*.
\q1
\v 23 At that time, I will take care of the Israeli people
\q2 \add like a farmer plants and takes care of his crops\add* [MET].
\q1 I will love those people that I previously said were ones I did not love,
\q2 and I previously said, You are not my people,
\q2 and then they will say to me, You are our God.’”
\c 3
\s1 Hosea bought his wife again
\p
\v 1 Then Yahweh said to me, “Go and show to your wife that you still love her, even though she has been committing adultery with another man who loves her. \add That will show that\add* I still love the people of Israel, even though they worship other gods/idols and eat raisin cakes \add in feasts that honor those gods\add*.”
\p
\v 2 \add My wife had become a slave\add*, but I bought her for ◄6 ounces/179 grams► of silver and ten bushels of barley.
\v 3 Then I said to her, “You must wait for many days \add before we sleep together\add* [EUP]. During that time, you must not be a prostitute, and you must not have sex with any other man; but I will live with you.”
\p
\v 4 \add Our doing that will show that\add* in the same way, the people of Israel will not have a king and other leaders for many years. They will not offer sacrifices or \add have sacred stone\add* pillars, no sacred vest \add for the Supreme Priest\add*, and no idols!
\v 5 But later, the people of Israel will return to Yahweh their God and \add be guided by him and\add* a king who is a descendant of \add King\add* David. In the last/future days they will come to Yahweh, revering him and trembling in his presence, and he will bless them.
\c 4
\s1 Yahweh's accusation against Israel
\q1
\v 1 You Israeli people, listen to this message from Yahweh!
\q2 He is accusing you people who live in this country,
\q2 saying “The people are not faithfully \add doing what pleases me\add*,
\q1 they do not act kindly \add toward others\add*,
\q2 and they do not \add even\add* know me!
\q1
\v 2 Everywhere in this land they curse others, they murder others, they steal, and they commit adultery.
\q1 They act violently toward others
\q2 and commit one murder after another.
\q1
\v 3 It is because of their doing those things that there is no rain [MTY], the land has become dry,
\q2 the people are mourning,
\q1 and the people are dying \add from hunger\add*.
\q2 Even the wild animals and the birds and the fish in the sea are dying.
\b
\q1
\v 4 But no one should accuse someone else
\q2 and say it is his fault.
\q1 It is you priests whom I am accusing.
\q1
\v 5 So I will punish [MTY] you priests, night and day,
\q2 and I will punish the prophets with you.
\q1 I am going to destroy \add Israel, the nation that is like\add* [MET] a mother to you.
\q1
\v 6 It is because my people do not know \add about me\add* that they will be destroyed.
\q2 And their not knowing about me is because you have refused \add to teach them about me\add*;
\q2 so I will no longer allow you to be my priests.
\q1 You have forgotten the things that I taught you,
\q2 so I will forget \add to bless\add* your children.
\q1
\v 7 As there are more and more priests,
\q2 they have sinned against me more and more.
\q1 So I will no longer allow them to be honored;
\q2 instead, I will cause them to be disgraced.
\q1
\v 8 The priests get food from the \add offerings that the\add* people \add bring in order to be forgiven for having sinned\add*,
\q1 so the priests want the people to sin more and more
\q2 \add in order that the people will bring them more and more offerings\add*.
\q1
\v 9 The priests \add are as sinful\add* as the other people,
\q2 and I will punish all of them for what they have done;
\q2 I will pay them back for the \add evil\add* deeds that they have committed.
\b
\q1
\v 10 \add The priests\add* will eat, but they will still be hungry;
\q2 they will have sex with prostitutes, but they will not have any children,
\q1 because they have abandoned me, Yahweh,
\q1
\v 11 and they are devoting themselves to sleeping with prostitutes,
\q2 and to \add drinking\add* old wine and new wine,
\q2 which results in their not being able to think clearly.”
\s1 The people are condemned for idolatry
\q1
\v 12 “You my people request wooden idols
\q2 \add to tell you what you should do\add*
\q1 Like prostitutes who have left/abandoned their husbands,
\q2
\v 13 you have abandoned \add me\add* your God, and you are chasing after \add other gods\add* on the tops of hills and mountains;
\q1 you burn incense under oak trees, poplar trees, and other trees
\q2 where there is nice/pleasing shade.
\q1 So your daughters have become prostitutes,
\q2 and your daughters-in-law have committed adultery.
\b
\q1
\v 14 But it is not \add only\add* your daughters
\q2 \add whom I will punish\add* for having become prostitutes,
\q1 and it is not \add only\add* your daughters-in-law
\q2 whom I will punish for committing adultery,
\q1 because the men also are having sex with prostitutes,
\q2 and they offer sacrifices
\q2 with the prostitutes \add who search for men at the\add* shrines \add of the idols\add*.
\q1 \add They are all\add* foolish people, and they will all be ruined.
\b
\q1
\v 15 You Israeli people have abandoned me
\q2 like [MET] those who commit adultery have abandoned their spouses.
\q1 But do not cause \add the people of\add* Judah to sin also.
\q2 Do not go to Gilgal or go up to Beth-Aven \add towns\add*
\q2 \add to worship idols there\add*.
\q1 Do not make solemn promises there, saying Just \add as surely\add* as Yahweh lives, \add I will do what I am promising\add*.
\q1
\v 16 The people of Israel are as stubborn as [SIM] a young cow.
\q2 So there is no way [RHQ] that I, Yahweh, will \add provide food for them\add*
\q1 \add like a shepherd provides food\add* for his lambs
\q2 \add by leading them\add* to a nice meadow.
\q1
\v 17 The people of Israel have chosen to worship idols [MET],
\q2 so allow them \add to do what they want to do\add*.
\q1
\v 18 When their rulers finish drinking \add their wine\add*,
\q2 they go to find prostitutes;
\q2 they love their disgraceful behavior.
\q1
\v 19 But they will disappear
\q2 \add as though\add* [MET] they were blown away by a whirlwind.
\q1 They will become very ashamed because of their offering sacrifices \add to idols\add*.”
\c 5
\s1 Yahweh's accusation against the Israeli people
\q1
\v 1 “Listen, you priests!
\q2 And you other Israeli people, you also pay attention!
\q1 And you who are members of the king's family, \add you also need to\add* listen,
\q2 because \add I am going to\add* judge you!
\q1 Your \add worshiping idols\add* has been like [MET] a trap for the people at Mizpah \add town\add*;
\q2 it has been like [MET] a net spread out \add to catch people\add* at Tabor \add Mountain\add*.
\q1
\v 2 You have done many evil things,
\q2 so I will punish all of you.
\q1
\v 3 I know \add everything about the people of\add* Israel;
\q2 nothing that they have done is hidden from me.
\q1 Because \add the people of\add* Israel have given themselves \add to worshiping idols\add*
\q2 like [MET] prostitutes \add give themselves to the men they sleep with\add*,
\q1 they have become unacceptable to me.
\q1
\v 4 Because they \add like to do evil\add* deeds,
\q2 they will not return to me, their God.
\q1 Like prostitutes \add who have abandoned their husbands\add* [MET], they have [IDI] abandoned [MET] me;
\q2 they do not even know me, Yahweh.
\q1
\v 5 \add It is as though\add* their being proud testifies [PRS] against them.
\q2 The sins that \add the people of\add* Israel have committed \add are like a heavy load that causes them\add* to stumble,
\q2 and \add the people of\add* Judah stumble with them.
\q1
\v 6 They will come to worship me, Yahweh,
\q2 bringing their herds of sheep and cattle,
\q1 but they will not \add be able to\add* find me,
\q2 because I have abandoned them.
\q1
\v 7 They have abandoned me;
\q2 and their children do not belong to me [MET].
\q1 So \add they will not be able to celebrate\add* their festivals at the new moons
\q2 because I will destroy them and \add the crops in\add* their fields.
\b
\q1
\v 8 Blow the rams' horns in Gibeah \add town\add*
\q2 \add and blow\add* the trumpets in Ramah \add town\add*
\q1 Warn the people at Beth-Aven \add town\add*;
\q2 you warriors of the tribe of Benjamin, lead the troops \add into the battle\add*.
\q1
\v 9 Israel will be ruined on the day that I destroy them.
\q2 What I am telling to the tribes of Israel will certainly \add happen\add*.
\q1
\v 10 \add Because the leaders of Judah seized some land that belonged to Israel\add*,
\q2 they are like [SIM] those who move boundary markers \add to get more land for themselves\add*;
\q1 so I will punish them severely [MET].
\q1
\v 11 And \add the people of\add* Israel will suffer greatly when I punish them
\q2 because they are very determined to worship idols.
\q1
\v 12 I will destroy \add the people of\add* Israel like [SIM] ◄\add larvae of\add* moths/cockroaches► destroy wool,
\q2 and I will cause \add the people of\add* Judah to be like [SIM] rotten wood.
\b
\q1
\v 13 When \add the leaders of\add* Israel and Judah saw that the people were suffering
\q2 because of what \add their enemies were doing to them\add* [MET],
\q1 they sent \add messages\add* to the great King of Assyria
\q2 requesting \add his help\add*.
\q1 But he cannot help you;
\q2 he cannot cause you to stop suffering,
\q2 \add because I am the one who is punishing\add* Israel and Judah.
\q1
\v 14 I will become like [SIM] a lion [DOU] to both nations;
\q2 I will \add attack them and\add* tear them to pieces.
\q1 I will drag them away,
\q2 and no one will be able to rescue them.
\q1
\v 15 After that, I will return to my place \add in heaven\add*
\q2 until they admit that they have sinned [MTY] and return to me;
\q1 when they will experience \add many\add* troubles,
\q2 they will request me to help them.”
\c 6
\s1 The Israeli people were insincere about repenting
\q1
\v 1 \add The Israeli people say\add*, “Come, let's return to Yahweh!
\q1 He has caused us to be injured,
\q2 but he will heal us.
\q1 He has caused us to be wounded,
\q2 but \add it is as though\add* he will put bandages on our wounds [MET].
\q1
\v 2 After a very short time he will revive us;
\q2 in less than three days he will restore us
\q2 in order that we may live in his presence.
\q1
\v 3 We must try to know Yahweh;
\q2 \add if we do that\add*, he will come \add and help\add* us,
\q1 as surely as the sun rises \add every morning\add*,
\q2 as surely as rain falls every winter/cold season,
\q1 and as surely as the rain falls again ◄in the springtime/at the end of the cold season►.”
\q1
\v 4 But Yahweh \add knows they are insincere\add*;
\q1 \add so he says to them\add*, “You \add people of\add* Israel, and you \add people of\add* Judah,
\q2 \add I do not know\add* [RHQ] what I should do to you.
\q1 Your being faithful to me \add will disappear as quickly\add* as [SIM] the morning mist \add disappears\add*,
\q2 like [SIM] the dew \add on the ground\add* that disappears quickly \add when the sun shines\add*.
\q1
\v 5 I warned [HYP] you by \add the messages that I gave to\add* the prophets,
\q2 \add but you did not pay attention to my messages\add*.
\q1 Therefore I will completely destroy you;
\q2 the punishment that I give you will strike you like lightning.
\q1
\v 6 I want \add my people\add* to faithfully love me
\q2 more than \add I want them to offer\add* sacrifices to me;
\q1 \add I want them\add* to know me
\q2 more than \add I want them to\add* completely burn sacrifices \add on the altar\add*.
\q1
\v 7 But they have refused to obey my agreement, just like Adam did;
\q2 they have not been faithful to me.
\q1
\v 8 Gilead is a city \add full\add* of people who do wicked things;
\q2 \add in the streets\add* are the bloody footprints \add of those who have murdered others\add*.
\q1
\v 9 The priests are like [SIM] bandits who wait ◄in ambushes/along the road► to attack people;
\q2 they murder \add people who are walking\add* on the road to Shechem,
\q1 and they commit other disgraceful crimes.
\q1
\v 10 I have seen horrible things being done in Israel [MTY].
\q2 The people have abandoned me \add like prostitutes who have abandoned their husbands\add* [MET];
\q1 \add so the people of\add* Israel have become unacceptable to me.
\b
\q1
\v 11 And you \add people of\add* Judah,
\q2 I have appointed a time when I will punish [MET] you, too.
\b
\q1 Whenever I wanted to enable my people to prosper again,
\c 7
\q1
\v 1 and when I wanted to heal them again,
\q2 \add I did not do it\add*,
\q1 because I saw the wicked things that \add the people of\add* Samaria \add city\add* and \add other places in\add* Israel [DOU] have done.
\q1 They constantly deceive others;
\q2 bandits rob people in the streets.
\q1
\v 2 But they do not realize that I do not forget all the evil deeds that they do.
\q2 \add It is as though\add* they are surrounded by all the sins that they commit;
\q2 and \add it is though\add* those sins are always right in front of me [MTY].
\b
\q1
\v 3 Their king is delighted with the wicked things that they do;
\q2 his officials are happy about the people's lies.
\q1
\v 4 \add The king and his officials\add* are all treacherous.
\q2 They are \add always eager to do wicked things\add*;
\q1 they are like [SIM] an oven that is very hot:
\q2 A baker mixes the dough and waits for it to expand,
\q2 and he does not need to cause the oven to become hotter.
\q1
\v 5 The king and his officials get very drunk during their festivals,
\q2 carousing with others who also do foolish things.
\q1
\v 6 The officials angrily plan to murder the king;
\q2 it is like [SIM] they have an oven in their inner beings.
\q1 All during the night their \add eagerness/wanting to murder the king\add* is like a fire that is smouldering,
\q2 but in the morning it becomes like [MET] a roaring fire.
\q1
\v 7 All those officials are like [MET] hot flames
\q2 that completely burn up their rulers,
\q1 so all their kings are murdered,
\q2 and no one pleads with me \add to help them\add*.”
\s1 Other nations will not help them
\q1
\v 8 “\add The leaders of\add* Israel join with leaders of \add godless\add* nations;
\q2 so \add the leaders of\add* Israel are \add as worthless as\add* a pancake that is cooked on only one side.
\q1
\v 9 Joining with the rulers of foreign nations has caused Israel to be a weak \add nation\add*,
\q2 but the Israelis do not realize that.
\q1 Israel has become like [MET] a gray-haired old man,
\q2 but the people of Israel do not realize it.
\b
\q1
\v 10 Their being proud [PRS] testifies against them,
\q2 but in spite of that, they do not return to me, Yahweh, their God,
\q1 or \add even\add* try to know me.
\b
\q1
\v 11 The people of Israel have become foolish and stupid like [SIM] doves.
\q2 First they called out to Egypt \add to help them\add*,
\q1 and then they sought help from Assyria.
\q1
\v 12 But wherever they go \add to get help\add*,
\q2 \add I will not allow them to succeed\add*;
\q1 \add it will be as though\add* [MET] I will throw a net over them
\q2 like [SIM] \add a hunter captures\add* birds;
\q1 I will punish them for the evil things that they do.
\q1
\v 13 Terrible things will happen to them
\q2 because they abandoned/deserted me!
\q1 They will be destroyed
\q2 because they rebelled against me.
\q1 I wanted to rescue them,
\q2 but they tell lies about me.
\q1
\v 14 They do not cry out to me sincerely [IDI];
\q2 they \add only\add* lie on their beds and wail.
\q1 They gather together and request \add me to give them\add* grain and wine,
\q2 but they turn away from me.
\q1
\v 15 I trained/taught them and enabled them to become strong,
\q2 but now they plan \add to do\add* evil things to me.
\q1
\v 16 They have rejected me, their Great God, and turned to their god Baal;
\q2 they are \add as useless\add* as [SIM] a crooked bow.
\q1 Their leaders boast \add that they are very strong\add*,
\q2 but they will be killed by \add their enemies'\add* swords.
\q1 As a result, \add the people of\add* Egypt will laugh at them.”
\c 8
\s1 The Israelis will be punished because of their wrong decisions
\q1
\v 1 \add Yahweh said to me\add*, “Blow [MTY] your trumpet
\q2 \add to warn the people\add*
\q1 My people have rejected the agreement that I made with them,
\q2 and they have rebelled against \add obeying\add* my laws.
\q1 Therefore, \add their enemies\add* are swooping down on my people's country like [SIM] an eagle.
\q1
\v 2 My Israeli people cry out to me,
\q2 Our God, we know that you are our God!
\q1
\v 3 But because the Israeli people have rejected what is good,
\q2 their enemies will pursue them.
\q1
\v 4 The Israel people appointed \add their last three\add* kings,
\q2 but they did not ask me if I agreed to \add what they were doing\add*.
\q1 They chose their own leaders
\q2 without asking if I would approve of them.
\q1 They used their own silver and gold to make for themselves idols,
\q2 and doing that led them to be destroyed.
\q1
\v 5 You people of Samaria, throw away your \add idol that resembles a\add* calf!
\q2 I am extremely angry with you people!
\q1 How long [RHQ] will you \add do things that cause\add* you to be unacceptable to me?
\q2
\v 6 \add Someone in\add* Israel made that idol for you;
\q1 \add but I am\add* God and it is not.
\q2 So that idol of a calf in Samaria must be smashed to pieces.
\b
\q1
\v 7 \add The foolish thing that the people of Israel have done is like\add* [MET] trying to plant wind;
\q2 but what they harvest will be like [MET] a whirlwind.
\q1 So the grain that they planted will have no heads \add on the stalks\add*,
\q2 and as a result \add there will be no grain\add* from which to make flour.
\q1 And if it did produce good grain,
\q2 foreigners would \add come and\add* steal it.
\q1
\v 8 \add The people of\add* Israel will be defeated [MET] \add by their enemies\add*;
\q2 they will be \add scattered\add* among other nations and become worthless.
\q1
\v 9 Like [MET] donkeys that are looking for mates,
\q2 they have requested \add help\add* from Assyria;
\q1 they paid money to \add the leaders of Assyria\add*
\q2 in order to \add persuade those leaders to\add* protect them.
\q1
\v 10 But although they have agreed to pay money each year to \add the leaders of\add* those countries,
\q2 I will soon gather them together \add to punish them\add*.
\q2 The great King \add of Assyria\add* will cause them to suffer greatly.
\b
\q1
\v 11 Although \add the people of\add* Israel built many altars to present offerings \add to their idols\add* to take away \add their guilt for\add* sinning,
\q2 those altars have become places where they commit \add more\add* sins.
\q1
\v 12 I wrote many laws for them,
\q2 but they disregarded them, saying that \add they did not have to obey them because\add* they were different from laws that they had known previously.
\q1
\v 13 They offer sacrifices to me,
\q2 and they eat \add some of\add* the meat of those sacrifices, \add which is what I permitted them to do\add*.
\q2 But I, Yahweh, am not pleased with those sacrifices.
\q1 I remember the evil things that they have done,
\q2 and I will punish them for the sins that they have committed:
\q1 I will force them to \add go to other countries\add*
\q2 \add and become slaves like they were\add* [MET] in Egypt.
\q1
\v 14 \add The people of\add* Israel have abandoned/forgotten me, the one who created their \add nation\add*;
\q2 they have built palaces,
\q2 and \add the people of\add* Judah have built walls around many towns.
\q1 But I will send a fire
\q2 that will destroy all their cities and their fortresses.”
\c 9
\s1 Israel will be punished
\q1
\v 1 You people of Israel, do not shout joyfully \add during your festivals\add* like \add people of other\add* nations do!
\q2 \add I say that\add* because you have ◄not been faithful to/abandoned► me, your God.
\q1 At every place where the people thresh grain
\q2 you have \add presented gifts to your idols like men\add* pay money to prostitutes.
\q1
\v 2 \add But soon\add* there will not be enough grain [MTY, PRS] and wine [MTY, PRS] for you.
\q1
\v 3 And you people will not remain in the land that I, Yahweh, \add gave to your ancestors\add*.
\q2 You will be \add captured and taken to\add* Assyria,
\q2 \add where you will become slaves like your ancestors were\add* in Egypt;
\q1 and in Assyria you will be forced to eat food that I have forbidden you to eat.
\q1
\v 4 You Israelis will not \add be able to\add* give wine offerings to me,
\q2 or bring sacrifices to me.
\q1 None of your other sacrifices will please me;
\q2 they will be unacceptable to me, like [SIM] food that is touched by people at funerals,
\q1 and everyone who eats that food will become unacceptable to me.
\q1 They will be permitted to eat that food themselves,
\q2 but they will not be permitted to bring it into my temple.
\q1
\v 5 At that time you will not [RHQ] be able to celebrate my feasts and sacred festivals.
\q1
\v 6 And even if you escape and are not killed \add by the Assyrians\add*,
\q2 you will be captured by \add the army of\add* Egypt,
\q2 and you will \add die and\add* be buried in Memphis, \add the capital of Egypt\add*.
\q1 Briers will \add grow up and\add* cover your treasures of silver,
\q2 and thorns will grow in your ruined tents/houses.
\q1
\v 7 It is now the time for me to punish you,
\q2 to pay you back for all the sins that you have committed.
\q2 You people will \add soon\add* know that.
\q1 You have \add committed\add* very many sins,
\q2 and you very much hate me.
\q1 You consider that the prophets are foolish,
\q2 and you think that those who proclaim messages from me are crazy.
\q1
\v 8 My God appointed \add me and the other\add* prophets
\q2 to be like [MET] watchmen \add to warn\add* you people of Israel,
\q1 but everywhere that we go, \add it is as though\add* people set traps for us
\q2 and people are hostile to us, \add even\add* in the temple of our God.
\q1
\v 9 The sins that the Israeli people have committed are as awful as \add what the men of\add* Gibeah did long ago;
\q1 so I will not forget the wicked things that they have done;
\q2 I will punish them for all those sins.
\b
\q1
\v 10 \add Yahweh says\add*, “When I first started \add to do things to help\add* Israel,
\q2 it seemed to me as though [SIM] I had found grapes in the desert.
\q1 Your ancestors were \add delightful\add*,
\q2 like [SIM] the first figs that grow on fig trees \add each year\add*.
\q1 But when they came to Peor \add Mountain\add*,
\q2 they worshiped that disgusting idol Baal,
\q2 and they became as disgusting as the idol that they loved.
\q1
\v 11 The things that cause Israel to be great will disappear
\q2 like [SIM] a bird that flies away;
\q1 \add most of their women will\add* not become pregnant [DOU] or give birth to children.
\q1
\v 12 Even if their children are born and grow up,
\q2 I will cause all of them to die \add while they are still young\add*.
\q1 Terrible things will happen to them
\q2 when I abandon them!
\q1
\v 13 I have seen Israel become beautiful and prosperous like Tyre \add city\add* was \add before it was destroyed\add*,
\q2 but now the people of Israel will \add be forced to\add* bring out their children to be slaughtered \add by their enemies\add*.”
\b
\q1
\v 14 Yahweh, \add I do not know\add* [RHQ] what I should request for my people.
\q2 So I request that you do this one thing:
\q1 Cause the women who are pregnant to have miscarriages
\q2 and have breasts that have no milk in them \add to nurse their babies\add*.
\b
\q1
\v 15 \add Yahweh says\add*, “Because of all the wicked things that my people did at Gilgal,
\q2 that is where I started to hate them.
\q1 And now, because of all the sinful deeds that they have done,
\q2 I will expel them from my country.
\q1 I will not love them any longer;
\q2 all their leaders rebel against me.
\q1
\v 16 Israel is like [MET] a grapevine that is dried up;
\q2 \add like a vine\add* [MET] whose roots are withered
\q2 and that produces no fruit.
\q1 Even if the \add women of Israel\add* give birth to more children,
\q2 I will cause those children whom they love to die.
\b
\q1
\v 17 The people of Israel have not obeyed me, their God,
\q2 so I will reject them.
\q2 As a result, they will wander among the other nations, \add searching for a place to live\add*.”
\c 10
\q1
\v 1 “Israel was like [MET] a large healthy/luxuriant vine
\q2 that produced \add a lot of\add* grapes.
\q1 But as the people became richer,
\q2 they made more altars \add at which to worship idols\add*.
\q1 As the people prospered,
\q2 they built and decorated sacred pillars \add that they worshiped\add*.
\q1
\v 2 They are deceitful in their inner beings;
\q2 so now they are guilty and must be punished.
\q1 I, Yahweh, will tear down their altars
\q2 and smash those pillars.
\q1
\v 3 Then they will say, It is because we did not revere Yahweh
\q2 that we no longer have a king.
\q1 But \add even if we had\add* a king,
\q2 he certainly could not [RHQ] do anything to help us.
\q1
\v 4 They falsely promise \add that they will do many things\add*;
\q2 they solemnly promise and make agreements,
\q2 but they do not do what they promise.
\q1 So people accuse and sue each other in the courts;
\q2 they are like [SIM] poisonous weeds that grow in a plowed field.
\q1
\v 5 The people who live in Samaria \add city\add* are worried about \add what may happen to\add* the idol that resembles a calf \add that they set up\add* at Beth-Aven \add town\add*.
\q1 The people in Samaria will mourn,
\q2 and the priests there will cry about it
\q2 \add if it is damaged or destroyed\add*.
\q1 \add Previously\add* they shouted joyfully
\q2 about its being very great;
\q1 but now it will not be great anymore.
\q1
\v 6 It will be taken to Assyria
\q2 to be a gift for the great King \add of Assyria\add*.
\q1 So the people of Israel will be disgraced,
\q2 and they will be ashamed
\q2 because \add they trusted in\add* that idol.
\q1
\v 7 The King of Samaria \add and the other people in Samaria\add* will be gone;
\q2 they will be like [SIM] a twig \add that floats away\add* on the surface of the water \add and disappears\add*.
\q1
\v 8 The altars on the tops of hills \add where the people worshiped idols\add* will be destroyed;
\q2 those have been the places where the people of Israel sinned greatly.
\q1 Thorns and weeds will grow and cover those altars.
\q2 Then the people will plead to the mountains and hills,
\q1 \add Fall down and\add* cover us
\q2 \add to protect us from God punishing us\add*!
\b
\q1
\v 9 You people of Israel, \add ever since your ancestors did evil things\add* at Gibeah,
\q2 you have continued to sin.
\q1 \add When the people at\add* [PRS] Gibeah \add did evil things\add*,
\q2 the result was a war \add in which thousands of people died\add*.
\q1
\v 10 So now, when I want to, I will punish the Israeli people:
\q2 Because of the many sins that they have committed,
\q1 \add the armies of\add* other nations will gather to attack them,
\q2 and they will cause the Israeli people to become their slaves.
\q1
\v 11 Israel is like [MET] a well-trained ◄heifer/young cow►
\q2 that likes to thresh grain.
\q1 So \add now you will become slaves\add*.
\q2 \add It will be as though\add* I will put a yoke on your neck,
\q1 and you will be forced to work hard for your enemies in their fields.
\q2 \add You people of\add* Israel and Judah \add will be forced to go to Assyria\add*;
\q2 there you [DOU] will pull plows to break up the ground \add for planting seeds\add*.
\q1
\v 12 \add You plow your fields and plant your seeds\add* and harvest \add your crops\add* [MET],
\q2 \add but what you need to do is\add* to act righteously and to faithfully love me;
\q1 you need to repent [MET],
\q2 because it is time to try to know me, Yahweh;
\q1 and if you do that, I will pour out [MET] many blessings on you.
\q1
\v 13 You plant \add seeds\add* and harvest \add the crops and eat them\add*;
\q2 but \add what I consider that you have really done is\add* to plant wicked deeds and harvested evil deeds
\q2 and eaten [MET] the results [IDI] of the lies that you have told.
\q1 \add Instead of trusting in me\add*, you have ◄depended on/trusted in► your own power
\q2 and in your many soldiers.
\q1
\v 14 As a result, you will soon hear the roar of battle,
\q2 and all your cities that have walls around them will be destroyed,
\q1 like [SIM] Shalman's \add army\add* destroyed Beth-Arbel \add city\add* in a battle,
\q2 and the women \add in that city\add* and their children were bashed to death.
\q1
\v 15 \add You people of\add* [APO] Bethel \add city\add*, that is what will happen to you,
\q2 because you are very wicked.
\q1 And when the sun rises on that day,
\q2 the king of Israel will be killed \add in the battle\add*.”
\c 11
\s1 God's love for Israel
\q1
\v 1 “Before the Israeli people became a nation [MET],
\q2 I loved them \add like a man loves\add* his son,
\q2 and I called them out of Egypt.
\q1
\v 2 But while I continued to call them,
\q2 they continued to turn away from me more and more.
\q1 They offered sacrifices to their statues of Baal,
\q2 and they burned incense to honor them.
\q1
\v 3 The people of Israeli were \add like a little boy\add* [MET],
\q2 and \add it was as though\add* it was I who taught them to walk,
\q2 holding them by their hands.
\q1 But they did not realize that it was I who was taking care of them.
\q1
\v 4 \add It was as though I fastened\add* ropes \add around them\add* to lead them,
\q2 while I loved them and acted kindly toward them.
\q1 \add It was as though they were young oxen\add* [MET]
\q2 and I lifted the yoke from their necks and bent down to feed them.
\b
\q1
\v 5 But the people of Israel will become slaves again,
\q2 like they were in Egypt,
\q1 and \add the people of\add* Assyria will [RHQ] rule over them,
\q2 because the people of Israel refused to repent.
\q1
\v 6 \add Their enemies\add* will use their swords \add to attack\add* the cities of Israel
\q2 and will destroy the bars in the gates \add of the city walls\add*.
\q2 As a result, the people of Israeli will not be able to accomplish the things that they planned to do.
\q1
\v 7 My people are determined to ◄turn away from/abandon► me.
\q2 They say that I am the great all-powerful God,
\q2 but they do not honor me at all.
\b
\q1
\v 8 You people of Israel, I certainly do not want to [RHQ] abandon you
\q2 and allow \add your enemies\add* to capture you.
\q1 I do not [RHQ] want to act toward you like I acted toward Admah and Zeboiim,
\q2 \add cities that I completely destroyed when I destroyed Sodom\add*.
\q1 I [SYN] have changed my mind about \add punishing you\add*;
\q2 my desire to pity you has been aroused.
\q1
\v 9 Although I am extremely angry,
\q2 I do not want to punish you severely;
\q1 I do not want to ◄devastate/completely ruin► Israel.
\q2 \add Humans would easily decide to do that\add*,
\q2 but I am God, not a human.
\q1 I am the Holy One among you;
\q2 although I am very angry with you, I will not \add destroy you\add*.
\q1
\v 10 You will follow me when I roar like [SIM] a lion;
\q2 when I roar, \add some of you\add* my children will tremble as you return \add to Israel\add* from \add the islands and seacoasts toward\add* the west.
\q1
\v 11 \add Some of you\add* will come swiftly from Egypt
\q2 like a flock of birds;
\q2 \add others\add* will return from Assyria, like doves.
\q1 I will enable you to live in your homes \add in Israel\add* again.
\q2 \add That will surely happen, because\add* I, Yahweh, have said it.”
\s1 Israel and Judah are condemned now
\q1
\v 12 \add Yahweh says, “The people of\add* Israel have ◄surrounded me with lies/constantly told lies to me►.
\q2 And the people of Judah have also turned/rebelled against me, their God,
\q2 the Holy One who always does what I promise to do.”
\c 12
\q1
\v 1 \add The leaders of\add* Israel are constantly wavering \add about seeking help from other countries\add*.
\q2 Seeking their help is \add as useless as\add* [MET] chasing the wind.
\q2 They pile up their lies and violent acts.
\q1 \add First\add*, they make a treaty with Assyria,
\q2 and then they send olive oil to Egypt \add to seek their help\add*.
\q1
\v 2 Yahweh says that he will accuse \add the leaders of\add* Judah,
\q2 and that he will punish \add the descendants of\add* Jacob for what they have done.
\q1
\v 3 \add When Jacob\add* was in his mother's womb, he grabbed his brother \add Esau's\add* heel \add because he wanted to be born first\add*.
\q2 When Jacob grew up, he wrestled with God.
\q1
\v 4 He struggled with \add Yahweh, who had appeared to him in the form of\add* an angel, and Jacob defeated him,
\q2 but then he cried and asked the angel to bless him.
\q1 Later, God came to Jacob at Bethel
\q2 and talked with him there.
\q1
\v 5 \add That was\add* the Commander of the armies of angels
\q2 whose name is Yahweh \add who talked with him\add*
\q1
\v 6 But you \add people of Israel\add* must return to your God!
\q2 You must faithfully love him, and you must do what is fair/just
\q2 and always depend on him.
\b
\q1
\v 7 The merchants \add among you\add* use scales that do not weigh correctly;
\q2 they love/like to cheat people.
\q1
\v 8 The people of Israel boast, saying
\q2 “We are very rich [DOU];
\q1 and we got all that money by our own efforts,
\q2 and without committing any sin.”
\b
\q1
\v 9 “I am Yahweh your God,
\q2 the one who brought your \add ancestors\add* out of Egypt.
\q1 \add And some day\add* I will force you to live in tents again \add like your ancestors did\add*
\q2 when \add they celebrated\add* the Festival \add of Living in Temporary Shelters\add*.
\q1
\v 10 \add Many times\add* I spoke to the prophets,
\q2 and I gave them many visions,
\q2 and I gave them parables to tell \add to the people\add*.”
\b
\q1
\v 11 The people of Gilead \add city\add* are [RHQ] extremely wicked;
\q2 they are worthless.
\q1 The people sacrifice bulls in Gilgal \add city\add*,
\q2 but their altars will \add soon\add* become like [SIM] piles of stone \add at the edge of\add* a plowed field.
\q1
\v 12 \add Your ancestor\add* Jacob fled \add from his brother Esau\add*
\q2 and went to northwest Mesopotamia.
\q2 He worked for \add his uncle Laban for many years\add* to get a wife;
\q2 he took care of \add his uncle's\add* sheep to pay for her.
\q1
\v 13 \add Many years later\add*, Yahweh enabled a prophet to bring the \add ancestors of you\add* people of Israel here from Egypt;
\q2 that prophet, \add Moses\add*, took care of them.
\q1
\v 14 \add But now the people of\add* Israel have caused Yahweh to become very angry;
\q2 Yahweh says that they deserve to die because they caused \add many others\add* to die [MTY];
\q2 he will pay them back for the sins that they have committed against him and for insulting him.
\c 13
\s1 Israel is doomed to be destroyed
\q1
\v 1 Previously, when the leaders of Israel spoke,
\q2 the people trembled;
\q2 those leaders were highly respected by the Israeli people.
\q1 But the people sinned greatly by \add worshiping\add* Baal,
\q2 so now they will be killed \add by their enemies\add*.
\q1
\v 2 Now they sin more and more;
\q2 they make idols for themselves
\q2 and \add cover the idols\add* with their silver.
\q1 Those idols are statues that are very cleverly made,
\q2 but those statues are made by \add mere\add* humans.
\q1 But \add the people are told\add*, “Kiss those idols \add that resemble a\add* calf,
\q2 and offer sacrifices to them!”
\q1
\v 3 Therefore, those people will \add disappear quickly\add* like [SIM] the morning mist or the dew that lies \add on the ground\add* early \add in the morning\add*;
\q2 \add they will disappear\add* like [SIM] chaff that is blown away from where \add the wheat\add* is threshed,
\q2 like [SIM] smoke that goes out of a window.
\b
\q1
\v 4 But \add Yahweh says to his people\add*, “I am Yahweh, your God,
\q2 the one who brought your \add ancestors\add* out of Egypt.
\q1 You must believe that only I am God
\q2 and that there is no other God,
\q2 and that there is no other one who can save you!
\q1
\v 5 I took care of your \add ancestors\add* when they were in the desert,
\q2 where it was extremely \add hot and\add* dry.
\q1
\v 6 When I provided food for them,
\q2 their stomachs were full, and they were satisfied.
\q1 But then they became proud
\q2 and they forgot about me,
\q2 \add and you are like your ancestors\add*
\q1
\v 7 So I will attack you like [SIM] a lion \add attacks other animals\add*;
\q2 I will be like [SIM] a leopard that waits beside the road \add to attack another animal\add*.
\q1
\v 8 Like [SIM] a female bear attacks anyone that steals her cubs,
\q2 I will attack you Israelis and rip you open.
\q1 I will completely get rid of you
\q2 like [SIM] lions or other wild animals tear apart the animals that they catch and devour them.
\b
\q1
\v 9 \add You people of\add* Israel, you will be destroyed
\q2 because you oppose me, the only one who ◄can help/helps► you.
\q1
\v 10 You have a king;
\q2 ◄why is he \add unable to save you\add*?/but he is \add unable to save you\add*. ► [RHQ]
\q1 You have [RHQ] rulers in all your towns,
\q2 \add but they are not helping you, either\add*.
\q1 Your ancestors said, Appoint for us a king and other leaders \add to rule over us\add*
\q2 \add like the other nations have\add*!
\q1
\v 11 I was angry with them \add for requesting that\add*,
\q2 but I appointed a king \add to rule over\add* them.
\q1 But \add later\add* I became very angry with you again,
\q2 so I took your king away.
\q1
\v 12 \add I have written on a scroll\add* a record of the sins that have been committed by you people of Israel,
\q2 and I have stored away that record.
\b
\q1
\v 13 You people are not wise;
\q2 and now \add you are helpless\add*:
\q1 You are like [MET] a woman who is having birth pains
\q2 but who is unable to give birth to the baby.
\q1
\v 14 I certainly will not [RHQ] save you from being killed
\q2 and from going to the place where the dead people are.
\q1 I will [RHQ] cause you to be afflicted by plagues
\q2 and to die and be buried in graves.
\q1 I will not act mercifully toward you.
\b
\q1
\v 15 Even if you people of Israel prosper more than the nearby nations do,
\q2 \add the army of Assyria\add* will come like [MET] an east wind that blows from the desert;
\q1 the springs and wells in Israel will become dry;
\q2 and your enemies will take away all your valuable possessions.
\q1
\v 16 You people of Samaria must be punished
\q2 because you have rebelled against me, your God.
\q1 You will be killed by \add your enemies'\add* swords;
\q2 your little children will be \add killed by being\add* dashed/thrown to the ground;
\q2 the bellies of pregnant women \add among you\add* will be ripped open.”
\c 14
\s1 Those who repent will be blessed
\q1
\v 1 \add You people of\add* Israel, return to Yahweh our God.
\q2 You are being punished because of the sins which you have committed.
\q1
\v 2 So now return to Yahweh
\q2 and say [MTY] this to him:
\q1 “Forgive us for all the sins that we have committed,
\q2 and kindly accept ◄us/our sacrifices►
\q1 in order that we may thank/praise you [IDI].
\q1
\v 3 \add We admit that\add* Assyria will not save us,
\q2 and our war horses will not save us, either.
\q1 We will never again say, You are our gods
\q2 to \add the idols that\add* we [SYN] have made.
\q2 You are the one who acts mercifully to orphans.”
\q1
\v 4 \add Yahweh says, “If they say that to me\add*, I will forgive them for having ◄turned away from/abandoned► me,
\q2 and I will love them with all my inner being,
\q2 because I [PRS] will have stopped being angry with them.
\q1
\v 5 I will be to the people of Israel
\q2 like dew \add that refreshes the soil\add*.
\q1 When I do that, they will \add become as delightful as\add* [MET] lilies are when they are blooming.
\q2 \add No one will be able to conquer them\add*;
\q2 they will be \add as unmovable as\add* [SIM] the roots \add of cedar trees\add*.
\q2
\v 6 \add Their good influence will spread\add* like [MET] the branches of a tree.
\q1 They will be like [SIM] beautiful olive trees,
\q2 and \add they will be as delightful as\add* [SIM] the aroma of the cedar \add trees in\add* Lebanon.
\q1
\v 7 People will \add come to them to be protected\add*
\q2 \add like people are protected from the hot sun by being\add* [MET] in the shade \add of a tree\add*.
\q1 They \add will ◄flourish/be strong► like\add* [SIM] grain that grows well.
\q2 They will \add be successful like\add* a vineyard \add in which grapes grow abundantly\add*.
\q1 They will become as famous/well-known as [SIM] the wines from Lebanon.
