| The word of Yahweh that was to Hosea, the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, {and} Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam, the son of Joash, king of Israel. | Yahweh gave this message to Hosea son of Beeri during the time when Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah were kings of Judah, and when Jeroboam son of Joash was king of Israel. |
Hosea’s father was Beeri.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| The beginning of {when} Yahweh spoke through Hosea. And Yahweh said to Hosea, “Go, take for yourself a wife of prostitutions and children of prostitutions, for prostituting, the land prostitutes {itself} from after Yahweh.” | When Yahweh first spoke through Hosea, Yahweh said to him, “Go and marry a prostitute. {Some of} her children will result from her sexual relations with other men. Do this to show how the people of this land have been very unfaithful to me, as though they were an unfaithful wife who has abandoned her husband in favor of other men.” |
Yahweh told him to marry a prostitute.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| So he went and took Gomer, the daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore a son to him. | So Hosea married Gomer daughter of Diblaim, and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son for him. |
Hosea married Gomer, the daughter of Diblaim.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| And Yahweh said to him, “Call his name Jezreel, for yet a little {while} and I will visit the bloodshed of Jezreel on the house of Jehu, and I will cause the kingdom of the house of Israel to cease. | Yahweh said to Hosea, “Name him Jezreel, because very soon I will punish the descendants of Jehu for all of the people that he slaughtered at the town of Jezreel. I will end the nation of Israel. |
Hosea was told to name his son Jezreel because Yahweh was soon going to punish the descendants of Jehu for the people he had slaughtered at Jezreel.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| And it will be on that day that I will break the bow of Israel in the Valley of Jezreel.” | At that time, I will destroy the army of Israel in the Valley of Jezreel.” |
Yahweh said he would destroy Israel’s army in the Valley of Jezreel.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| And she conceived again and bore a daughter. And he said to him, “Call her name Lo Ruhamah, for I will not continue again to have compassion on the house of Israel, but carrying away, I will carry them away. | Gomer became pregnant again and gave birth to a daughter. Yahweh said to Hosea, “Name her Lo Ruhamah, because I will no longer pity the people of Israel. Instead, I will certainly remove them {from their land}. |
Yahweh told him to call her Lo Ruhamah.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| But the house of Judah I will have compassion on, and I will save them by Yahweh their God. And I will not save them by bow and by sword and by battle, by horses, and by horsemen.” | However, I will pity the people of Judah, and I, Yahweh their God, will rescue them. I will do it myself; I will not save them by using their bows, swords, warfare, horses, or horsemen.” |
Yahweh will have compassion on the people of Judah.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| And she weaned Lo Ruhamah, and she conceived and bore a son. | After Gomer had weaned Lo Ruhamah, she became pregnant {again} and gave birth to {another} son. |
She conceived and gave birth to another son.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| And he said, “Call his name Lo Ammi, for you {are} not my people, and I {am} not ‘I am’ for you.” | Yahweh said, “Name him Lo Ammi, because you {people of Israel} are no longer my people, and I am no longer your God.” |
Hosea was told to name his son Lo Ammi to show that the Israelites were no longer Yahweh’s people.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| And it will be {that} the number of the sons of Israel will be like the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured and cannot be counted. And it will be {that} in the place where it was said to them, “You {are} not my people,” it will be said to them, “Sons of the living God.” | Yet someday the people of Israel will become a people group that is vast in number. In the very place where God said to them, “You are not my people,” he will call them, “sons {and daughters} of the living God.” |
It will be said to them that they are sons of the living God.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| And the sons of Judah and the sons of Israel will be gathered together, and they will appoint for themselves one head, and they will arise from the land, for great {is} the day of Jezreel. | Then the people of Judah and the people of Israel will unite together and choose one leader for all of them. It will be a marvelous time when Jezreel happens, that is, when God brings his people back to their own land as though sowing them there as seeds, and they will prosper there. |
They will unite and choose one leader for themselves.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| Say to your brothers, “Ammi,” and to your sisters, “Ruhamah.” | {Yahweh also said}, “At that time, you will say to your fellow Israelite men, ‘Ammi, you are God’s people,’ and {you will say} to your fellow Israelite women, ‘Ruhamah, you are ones whom God loves.’” |
They should say to their brothers, “Ammi,” and to their sisters, “Ruhamah.”
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| Contend with your mother, contend, for she {is} not my wife, and I {am} not her husband. And let her remove her prostitutions from her face, and her adulteries from between her breasts, | Children, dispute earnestly with your mother, because she is no longer my wife, and I am no longer her husband. Tell her to stop her sexually immoral behavior and to stop being unfaithful to me. |
If Israel (the prostitute) does not put away her prostitution, Yahweh will strip her naked and show her nakedness as on the day that she was born.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| lest I strip her naked, and place her as {on} the day of her being born, and I make her like the wilderness, and set her like a land of dryness, and I kill her with the thirst. | Otherwise, I will strip her as naked as on the day she was born. I will make her as bare as a wilderness. I will cause her to become as dry as a desert, and I will let her die of thirst. |
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| And I will not have compassion on her children, for they {are} children of prostitutions. | I will not pity her children, because they are as unfaithful as their prostitute mother. |
Yahweh will not have compassion on her children, because they are as unfaithful as their prostitute mother.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| For their mother has prostituted {herself}; the one who conceived them has acted shamefully, for she said, “Let me go after my lovers, the givers of my bread and my water, my wool and my linen, my oil and my drink.” | I say this because she has been unfaithful to me and has acted shamefully. Indeed, she said, “I will run to the ones who love me; they are the ones who give me my food and water, my wool and linen, my olive oil and my {wine to} drink.” |
She said she would go after her lovers, who gave her bread, water, wool, linen, oil, and wine to drink.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| Therefore, behold me blocking your way with the thorns, and I will wall up a wall against her, and her paths she will not find. | So {I am about to do things that will be as though} I am blocking her road with thorn-bushes and building a wall in her way so that she does not know what to do. |
He will block her way with thorns and build a wall in her way so that she does not know what to do.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| And she will pursue her lovers, but she will not overtake them, and she will seek them, but she will not find {them}. And she will say, “Let me go and return to my first husband, for {it was} better for me then than now.” | She will repeatedly seek the ones that {she thinks} love her, but she will not find them. Then she will think, “Perhaps I should return to my actual husband, because I was better off then than I am now.” |
She will return to her first husband because she thinks it was better for her then than now.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| And she, she did not know that I, I gave to her the grain and the new wine and the oil, and silver I multiplied to her, and gold {which} they made for the Baal. | None of them understand that I, {Yahweh,} am the one who gave them their grain, wine, and olive oil; I am the one who gave them abundant silver and gold, which they used to make images for Baal. |
Yahweh gave them silver and gold, which the people used to make idols for Baal.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| Therefore I will return and take my grain in its time, and my new wine in its appointed time, and I will snatch away my wool and my linen {meant} to cover her nakedness. | Therefore, I will come back and take my grain from them when it is ripe and the juice of my grapes in their season. I will take from them the wool and linen that I gave to them to cover their bodies. |
He will take back his grain, new wine, wool, and linen that were meant to cover their bodies.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| And now I will uncover her lewdness to the eyes of her lovers, and no man will deliver her from my hand. | Now I will expose how shameful they have been in front of those {gods} that they think love them. No one will be able to rescue them when I punish them. |
Yahweh will expose their shameful behavior in front of their (gods) lovers.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| And I will cause all of her joy to cease, her feast, her new moon, and her Sabbath, and all of her appointed festivals. | I will stop all of their celebrations: their yearly feasts, their new moon festivals, their Sabbath days, and all of their {other} regular festivals. |
He will cause all their celebrations to cease.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| And I will devastate her vine and her fig tree, of which she said, “A payment they {are} to me, which my lovers gave to me.” And I will make them a forest, and the beasts of the field will eat them. | I will destroy all their grapevines and fig trees, which they said were payments to them from those {gods} who loved them. I will turn those productive plants into a wild thicket, and wild animals will eat the fruit {that remains}. |
Israel’s lovers gave her grapevines and fig trees.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| And I will visit on her the days of the Baals, in which she burned {incense} to them, and she put on her ring and her jewelry, and she went after her lovers, but me she forgot. —the declaration of Yahweh. | I will punish them for all the times that they burned incense to honor the various Baals. They decorated themselves with rings and other jewelry and went to worship those {false gods} that they thought loved them, but they forgot about me! —this is what Yahweh declares. |
They burned incense to the Baals, put on their jewelry, and forgot Yahweh.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| Therefore, behold, I am alluring her, and I will lead her {into} the wilderness, and I will speak on her heart. | However, listen! I am working to persuade my people to worship me again; I will make them experience {what their ancestors did in} the wilderness and I will speak tenderly to them. |
He will lead her into the wilderness and speak tenderly to her.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| And I will give to her her vineyards from there, and the Valley of Achor as a door of hope. And she will answer there as {in} the days of her youth, and as {on} the day of her going up from the land of Egypt. | I will give their vineyards back to them from that {starting} point, and I will cause the Valley of Achor{, instead of a place of trouble,} to become a place where they will confidently expect {me to do} good things {for them}. They will respond to me there {willingly} as they did long ago, when I freed them from {being slaves in} Egypt. |
She will answer him as she did in the days of her youth, as in the days that she came out of the land of Egypt.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| And it will be on that day—the declaration of Yahweh—you will call {me} “My Husband,” and you will no longer call me “My Baal.” | At that time—this is what Yahweh declares—they will call me ‘My Husband.’ They will not call me ‘My Baal’ anymore. |
She will call him “My Husband,” and no longer “My Baal.”
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| And I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth, and they will no longer be remembered by their name. | I will not allow them to speak the names of the Baals, and they will never use those names again. |
He will not allow them to speak the names of the Baals, and they will never use those names again.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| And I will cut a covenant for them on that day, with the beasts of the field, and with the birds of the heavens, and the creeping things of the ground. And bow and sword and battle I will break from the land, and I will make them lie down in safety. | At that time I will make an agreement for them with the wild animals, the birds, and the creatures that crawl on the ground. I will also remove weapons of war such as bows and swords from the land. The result will be that my people will be able to live safely and peacefully. |
He will allow them to be able to live safely and peacefully.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| And I will betroth you to me forever, and I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, and in covenant faithfulness and in compassion. | They will belong to me forever as {though we are} married. I will do what is right and fair toward them, and I will faithfully love them and act mercifully toward them. |
Yahweh promised that they will belong to him forever.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| And I will betroth you to me in faithfulness, and you will know Yahweh. | I will be faithful to them, and they will truly know me, Yahweh. |
Yahweh will be faithful to them.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| And it will be on that day, I will answer—the declaration of Yahweh—I will answer the heavens, and they, they will answer the earth. | At that time, {when they ask for what they need}, I will respond—this is what Yahweh declares— I will tell the heavens to send rain, and on their part, the heavens will water the earth. |
He will tell the heavens to send rain and water the earth.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| And the earth will answer the grain and the new wine and the oil, and they will answer Jezreel. | Then the earth will produce grain, new wine, and olive oil, and those things will provide for {my people,} Jezreel. |
The earth will produce grain, new wine and olive oil for Jezreel.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| And I will sow her for myself on the earth, and I will have compassion on Lo Ruhamah, and I will say to Lo Ammi, “You {are} my people,” and he, he will say, “My God.” | I will establish them in the land as my own. I will pity Lo Ruhama, and I will say to {those whom I called} Lo Ammi, “You are my people,” and they, yes, they will say {to me}, “You are our God.” |
Yahweh will say to Lo Ammi, “You are my people.”
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| And Yahweh said to me, “Again go, love a woman loved by a friend and committing adultery, like the love of Yahweh for the sons of Israel, and they turning to other gods and lovers of raisin cakes of grapes.” | Then Yahweh said to me, “Go and show to your wife that you still love her, even though she has been committing adultery with another man who is her lover. That will show that I still love the people of Israel, even though they worship other gods and love to eat raisin cakes {in feasts that honor those gods}.” |
Hosea must love her just as Yahweh loves the people of Israel.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| So I bought her for myself for 15 of silver, and a homer of barley, and a lethek of barley. | So I bought her back for myself for 15 pieces of silver and 335 liters of barley. |
He bought her for fifteen pieces of silver and 335 liters of barley.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| And I said to her, “Many days you will dwell with me. You will not prostitute {yourself}, and you will not be to a man, and also I {will be} to you.” | Then I said to her, “You will live {here} with me for a long time. During that time, you must not be a prostitute, and you must not have sex with any man, and I will do the same concerning you.” |
Hosea tells his wife that she must not be a prostitute and must not have sex with any other man.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| For many days the sons of Israel will dwell without a king, and without a prince, and without a sacrifice, and without a pillar, and without an ephod, and teraphim. | This will show that {in a similar way,} the Israelites will live for a long time without a king, without leaders, without sacrifices, without sacred stone pillars, without a sacred vest for a priest, and {without} household idols. |
After the people of Israel live for many days without a king, they will again worship Yahweh their God.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| Afterward, the sons of Israel will return and will seek Yahweh their God and David their king, and they will tremble toward Yahweh and toward his goodness in the latter days. | But later, the people of Israel will again worship Yahweh their God and want to obey him and their king who is a descendant of King David. In that future time, they will revere Yahweh and marvel at how he has blessed them. |
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| Hear the word of Yahweh, sons of Israel, for Yahweh has a dispute with the dwellers of the land, for there is no truth and there is no covenant faithfulness, and there is no knowledge of God in the land. | You Israelite people, listen to what Yahweh says! Listen, because he is bringing charges against you people who live in this land, as follows: no one is honest, no one acts faithfully as they promised in the covenant, and no one knows God in this land. |
Yahweh has a dispute with the people who live in the land.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| Swearing and deceiving and murdering and stealing and committing adultery! They have broken out, and bloodshed touches bloodshed! | Instead, people curse and lie and murder and steal and commit adultery. This is happening everywhere! People are killing other people continually! |
The people are cursing, lying, murdering, stealing, and committing adultery.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| Therefore the land mourns, and every dweller in it languishes, along with the beasts of the field and the birds of the heavens, and even the fish of the sea are gathered away. | Because of all these things, the land dries up, and everyone who lives in it wastes away, along with the wild animals and the birds in the sky. Even the fish in the sea are diminishing. |
Everyone living in it is wasting away.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| Surely no man may dispute, and no man may reprove, but your people {are} like those disputing with a priest! | Certainly there is no one who can dispute {these charges}, and there is no one who can say that I am wrong. But you are like people who argue with a priest {when he corrects you}! |
The people are like those who argue with a priest.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| And you will stumble by day, and also the prophet will stumble with you by night, and I will destroy your mother. | Bad things will happen to you during the day, and also at night, and to your prophets, as well. I am going to destroy the nation of Israel, which is like a mother to you. |
The prophet will stumble along with the people by night.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| My people are destroyed from lack of the knowledge. Because you, you have rejected the knowledge, I will reject you from being a priest to me. And you have forgotten the law of your God; I, I also will forget your sons. | I will destroy my people because they have refused to know me, and because, on their part, they have refused to know me, I will no longer allow them to be my {kingdom of} priests. The nation of Israel has rejected the laws of their God; therefore, for my part, also I will reject her people. |
Yahweh will reject the people of Israel because they forgot and rejected the laws of their God.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| As they multiplied, so they sinned against me. I will exchange their glory for dishonor. | The more the people increased in number, the more they sinned against me. So instead of honoring them, I will make people despise them. |
Yahweh will make people despise them instead of honoring them.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| They eat the sin of my people, and to their iniquity they lift up his soul. | The priests feed on the sin offerings that my people bring, and each one craves for my people to sin even more. |
The priests eat the sin offerings, and they want the people to sin even more.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| And it will be like people, like priest. And I will visit upon him his ways, and I will return his deeds to him. | I will punish the priests along with the {other} people. I will punish them for how they have behaved; yes, I will pay them back for what they have done. |
Yahweh will punish the priest the same as the people, paying them back for what they have done.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| And they will eat but not be full. They prostituted {themselves}, but they will not increase, for they have forsaken to heed Yahweh. | They will eat, but they will still go hungry. They act like prostitutes, but they will not have more children, because they have abandoned obeying Yahweh. |
They will eat but will still be hungry.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| Prostitution and wine and new wine take heart. | Having sex with prostitutes, {drinking} wine and new wine, {all} make people unable to think clearly. |
Prostitution, wine, and new wine make people unable to think clearly.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| My people inquires of his wood, and his staff declares to him, for a spirit of prostitutions has led astray, and they have prostituted {themselves} from under their God. | My people ask their wooden idols {to guide them}, and {they think that} a wooden stick will answer them. They do this because they have strongly desired to be unfaithful sexually and so they are also unfaithful spiritually, and because they are unfaithful in these ways, their God no longer directs or protects them. |
They ask their wooden idols to guide them.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| On the tops of the mountains they sacrifice, and on the hills they burn {incense}, under oak and poplar and terebinth, for its shade {is} good. Therefore your daughters prostitute {themselves}, and your daughters-in-law commit adultery. | They burn sacrifices and incense on the mountaintops, on the hills, and under oak trees, poplar trees, and terebinth trees, because the shade there is pleasant. That is why your daughters have become prostitutes and your daughters-in-law have been unfaithful {to your sons}. |
They sacrifice on the mountaintops and burn incense on the hills, and under oak, poplar, and terebinth trees.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| I will not visit upon your daughters when they prostitute {themselves}, and upon your daughters-in-law when they commit adultery, for the men, they go aside with the prostitutes, and they sacrifice with the temple prostitutes, and a people {who} does not understand will be thrown down. | I will not punish your daughters for being prostitutes or your daughters-in-law for being unfaithful to their husbands, because the men themselves go off to be with prostitutes and offer sacrifices with the prostitutes who serve at the idol shrines. The people as a whole does not understand {what is right}, and so Yahweh will destroy them. |
Yahweh will not punish the people’s daughters when they choose to commit sexual immorality, for the men also give themselves and offer sacrifices with the shrine prostitutes.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| If you are prostituting {yourself}, Israel, let not Judah become guilty. And do not go {to} Gilgal, and do not go up {to} Beth Aven, and do not swear, “{By} the life of Yahweh.” | Even though you people of Israel are being unfaithful to Yahweh by worshiping idols, you should not cause the people of Judah to sin {also}. {Warn them,} “Do not go to Gilgal or go up to Beth Aven {to worship idols there}. Do not swear oaths {there}, {saying,} ‘I swear by the life of Yahweh {that I will do what I am promising}.’” |
They should not go to Gilgal or Beth Aven to worship idols there.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| For Israel is stubborn like a stubborn cow. Now will Yahweh pasture them like a lamb in a wide place? | I say this because the Israelite people behave as stubbornly as a young cow that refuses to obey. So Yahweh certainly will not allow them to {freely} graze like a {gentle} lamb in a broad meadow. |
Israel is compared to a stubborn cow that refuses to obey.
| ULT | UST |

| Ephraim {is} joined to idols. Leave him alone. | No, the people of Ephraim have chosen to worship idols. We can only leave them alone. |
Ephraim has chose to worship idols.
| ULT | UST |

| Their drink has ceased. Prostituting, they have prostituted {themselves}. Her shields have loved, loved dishonor. | They have drunk all that there was to drink; they have fully prostituted themselves. Their leaders have absolutely loved shameful things. |
The leaders of Ephraim loved shameful things.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| A wind has wrapped her in its wings, and they will have shame from their sacrifices. | {They will go into exile as though} a powerful wind has swept them away, and {all of} their sacrifices {to idols} will only make them ashamed. |
Their sacrifices to idols will make them ashamed.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| Hear this, priests, and pay attention, house of Israel, and give ear, house of the king, for the judgment {is} for you, for you have been a snare to Mizpah and a net spread over Tabor. | You priests, listen to this! You people of Israel, pay attention! You members of the royal court, listen carefully, because I am going to judge you. because you have enticed the people to sin at Mizpah, and you have made them sin at Mount Tabor. |
Yahweh tells the priests, the people of Israel, and the members of the royal court to pay attention because he is going to judge them.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| And the revolters have made the slaughter deep, but I {will} be a reproof to all of them. | Those who have rebelled against me have killed many people, so I will punish all of them. |
They have killed many people, and Yahweh will punish all of them.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| I, I know Ephraim, and Israel is not hidden from me, for now you have prostituted {yourself}, Ephraim; Israel is defiled. | I myself know all about you, people of Ephraim; I can see everything that the people of Israel do. Indeed, people of Ephraim, you have now been unfaithful to me {by worshiping idols}, yes, the people of Israel have made themselves unacceptable to me. |
Yahweh says he knows that they have been unfaithful to him by worshiping idols and have made themselves unacceptable to him.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| Their deeds will not allow {them} to return to their God, for a spirit of prostitutions {is} in their midst, and they do not know Yahweh. | They prefer to do {evil} things, so they refuse to worship their God any more. They do this because a strong desire to be physically and spiritually unfaithful is working among them, and they do not know Yahweh. |
The evil things Ephraim has done will not allow them to worship their God any more.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| And the pride of Israel testifies against his face, and Israel and Ephraim will stumble in their sin; Judah also stumbles with them. | The way that the people of Israel are so proud makes this clear to everyone. The people of Israel and Ephraim will fail because of how much they have sinned, and the people of Judah will fail with them. |
The people of Israel, Ephraim, and Judah will fail because of how much they have sinned.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| With their flocks and with their herds they will go to seek Yahweh, but they will not find {him}. He has withdrawn from them. | They will bring their flocks and herds and try to appease Yahweh by making sacrifices to him, but he will not receive them because he has removed himself from them. |
The people will not find Yahweh because he has removed himself from them.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| They have betrayed Yahweh, for they have borne strange children. Now {at} the new moon he will devour them with their portions. | Those nations have been like an unfaithful wife to Yahweh because their people are {like} illegitimate children{; they do not belong to Yahweh}. So now, {when they bring their sacrifices to} the New Moon {Festival}, Yahweh will kill them as they kill the animals that they bring {to sacrifice}. |
Yahweh will kill them, because they have betrayed him and do not belong to him.
| ULT | UST |

| Blow a shofar in Gibeah, a trumpet in Ramah! Sound the alarm at Beth Aven! After you, Benjamin! | Blow a horn in Gibeah; blow a trumpet in Ramah! Sound the alarm at Beth Aven! {The troops will follow} behind you, Benjamin! |
The horn should be blown in Gibeah, the trumpet in Ramah, and the alarm sounded at Beth Aven.

| Ephraim will become a desolation in the day of rebuke. Among the tribes of Israel I have made known what is certain. | The people of Ephraim will become desolate when I punish them. I have declared to the tribes of Israel what will certainly happen. |
Yahweh declared that Ephraim will become desolate when he punishes them.
| ULT | UST |
|---|---|
| The princes of Judah have become like the movers of a boundary. I will pour out my wrath on them like water. | The leaders of Judah act like people {who steal land by} moving boundary markers. {Therefore,} I will punish them abundantly. |
Yahweh will punish the leaders of Judah because of his wrath.
| ULT | UST |

| Ephraim is oppressed, crushed {in} judgment, because he was determined, he walked after nonsense. | I will cause the people of Ephraim to suffer greatly when I judge them because they were determined to worship worthless idols. |
The people of Ephraim will suffer greatly because they were determined to worship worthless idols.
| ULT | UST |

| So I {am} like a moth to Ephraim, and like rot to the house of Judah. | So I will destroy the people of Ephraim, just as moths {eat through wool clothing}. I will destroy the people of Judah, just as rot {eats through wood}. |
Yahweh will destroy the people of Ephraim like a moth destroys wool, and he will destroy the people of Judah like rot destroys wood.
| ULT | UST |
