Yahweh told Joshua to arise, cross the Jordan River with all the people, and go into the land he was giving to the sons of Israel.

Yahweh said that no one would be able to stand against Joshua because Yahweh would be with Joshua just as he had been with Moses.

Yahweh asked Joshua to be strong and very courageous, and to be careful to do according to all the law that Moses commanded, not turning from it to the right or to the left.

Yahweh told Joshua that the book of the law should not depart from his mouth, but he should meditate on it day and night.

Joshua told the officers to command the people to prepare provisions for themselves because within three days they would cross the Jordan to possess the land Yahweh was giving them.

Joshua reminded the people that Moses had said, “Yahweh your God is giving rest to you, and he will give to you this land.”

Joshua told them that their wives, children, and livestock could remain in the land Moses had given them east of the Jordan, but all their warriors, being armed, should cross over to help their brothers.

The people answered Joshua by saying they would do all that he had commanded them and go wherever he sent them.

The two spies stayed at the house of a prostitute named Rahab in Jericho.

When the king’s men came to Rahab looking for the spies, she had hidden the spies, and she denied knowing where they were.

Rahab told the king’s men that the spies had come to her, but she did not know where they were from, and they left at dark when the gate was about to shut. She told the men to pursue them quickly to overtake them.

Rahab told the spies that she knew Yahweh had given them the land and that the dread of them had fallen on her people.

Rahab said she believed Yahweh had given the Israelites the land because she had heard how Yahweh dried up the water of the Sea of Reeds for them and what they did to the two Amorite kings, Sihon and Og.

Rahab asked the spies to swear by Yahweh that they would keep her father, mother, brothers, sisters, and all their households alive and deliver them from death.

The spies promised Rahab that their lives would be given in place of hers if she did not tell about their mission, and they would deal kindly and faithfully with her when Yahweh gave them the land.

The spies told Rahab to tie a scarlet cord in the window and gather her father, mother, brothers, and all her father’s household into her house.

The spies told Joshua that Yahweh had given all the land into their hand and that all the inhabitants of the land were melting because of them.

The officers told the people that when they saw the Box of the Covenant and the priests carrying it, they should set out from their place and follow it.

The officers told the people to stay that far behind the Box of the Covenant so they would know the way to go, since they had not passed that way before.

Joshua said that Yahweh was going to do wonders for the people the next day.

Yahweh told Joshua to command the priests to stand still in the Jordan River once they reached the edge of its waters.

Joshua told the people that as soon as the soles of the priests’ feet rested in the Jordan’s waters, the waters flowing from above would be cut off and stand in one heap.

The people crossed the Jordan opposite Jericho, while the waters from above stood in a heap far away at Adam.

The priests who carried the Box of the Covenant stood firmly on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan River until all the nation had finished crossing.

Yahweh told Joshua to command the 12 men to take 12 stones from the middle of the Jordan, from where the priests’ feet stood, and carry them to their lodging place.

The stones would be a memorial to the people of Israel forever, because the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the Box of the Covenant of Yahweh when it crossed.

About 40,000 armed warriors crossed over before Yahweh to the plains of Jericho for battle.

When the priests’ feet touched dry ground, the waters of the Jordan returned to their place and flowed over all its banks as before.

At Gilgal Joshua set up the 12 stones that came out of the Jordan.

Joshua said they should tell their children so that all the peoples of the earth might know Yahweh’s hand is mighty, and so that they might fear Yahweh their God all the days.

When the kings heard how Yahweh had dried up the Jordan’s waters, their hearts melted, and there was no longer any spirit in them because of the sons of Israel.

Yahweh commanded Joshua to make flint knives and circumcise the sons of Israel a second time.

Joshua had to circumcise them because they were uncircumcised, as they had not been circumcised while they were traveling in the wilderness.

While camped at Gilgal, the sons of Israel celebrated the Passover on the evening of the fourteenth day of the month.

The manna stopped the day after they ate the produce of the land, and the sons of Israel no longer had manna.

Joshua saw a man standing in front of him with his drawn sword in his hand.

The man with the drawn sword told Joshua that he had come as the commander of the army of Yahweh.

Joshua fell on his face to the earth, bowed down, and asked what his lord was speaking to his servant.

The commander of Yahweh’s army told Joshua to remove his sandals from his feet because the place on which he was standing was holy.

Yahweh promised Joshua that he had given Jericho, its king, and its warriors into Joshua’s hand.

All the men of war were to circle the city, going around it one time each day for six days.

Yahweh told him that seven priests should carry seven shofars before the Box, and on the seventh day the people should circle the city seven times while the priests blew the shofars; then, at a long blast, all the people should shout.

Yahweh said the wall of the city would collapse unto itself, and the people should go up, every man straight into the city.

Joshua commanded the people not to shout, nor let their voice be heard, nor let a word go out of their mouth until the day he told them to shout.

Joshua said that only Rahab the prostitute and all who were with her in her house would live, because she hid the messengers they sent.

Joshua declared that all the silver, gold, and objects of bronze and iron were holy to Yahweh and must enter Yahweh’s treasury.

The people of Israel devoted to destruction by the sword all that was in the city—men and women, young and old, oxen, sheep, and donkeys.

Joshua commanded the two spies to go into the prostitute’s house and bring her out, and all who belonged to her, as they had sworn to her.

Joshua said that the man who rebuilt Jericho would be cursed before Yahweh: he would lay its foundation with his firstborn and set up its gates with his youngest son.

Yahweh’s anger burned against the sons of Israel because Achan, from the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things.

The spies reported to Joshua not to make all the people go up, but that about 2,000 or 3,000 men should strike Ai, because its people were few.

The men of Ai struck down about 36 of the Israelite men, pursued them from the gate to the quarries, and struck them on the descent.

Joshua tore his garments and fell on his face to the earth before the Box of Yahweh until evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust on their heads.

Yahweh told Joshua that Israel had sinned by transgressing his covenant, taking from the devoted things, stealing, deceiving, and putting it among their own things.

Yahweh told Joshua to arise, consecrate the people, and tell them to consecrate themselves for the next day because there was a devoted thing in their midst.

Yahweh said that the one caught with the devoted thing, he and all that belonged to him, would be burned with fire, because he transgressed Yahweh’s covenant and did a disgraceful thing in Israel.

Achan confessed he had taken a good coat from Shinar, 200 shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing 50 shekels.

Achan told Joshua he had hidden them in the earth in the middle of his tent, with the silver underneath.

Joshua and all Israel took Achan and all that he had to the Valley of Achor.

After Achan was dealt with, Yahweh turned from his burning anger.

Yahweh told Joshua not to fear, to take all the men of war, go up to Ai, set an ambush behind the city, and do to Ai and its king as he did to Jericho, but they could take its spoil and livestock for themselves.

Yahweh told the people they could plunder the spoil and livestock of Ai for themselves.

Joshua chose 30,000 men, warriors of valor, and sent them out by night.

Joshua planned that he and all the people with him would approach the city, and when the men of Ai came out to meet them as before, they would flee.

When the men captured the city, they were to burn it with fire, according to the word of Yahweh.

All the people in Ai were summoned to pursue Joshua’s army; they pursued Joshua, were drawn away from the city, and left the city open, as did the men of Bethel.

Yahweh told Joshua to stretch out the curved sword in his hand toward Ai, because he would give it into Joshua’s hand.

The men of Israel captured the king of Ai alive and brought him to Joshua.

Joshua did not draw back his hand with which he stretched out the curved sword until he had devoted all the inhabitants of Ai.

Israel plundered the livestock and the spoil of Ai for themselves, according to the word of Yahweh which he had commanded Joshua.

As the sun was going down, Joshua commanded, and they took his corpse down from the tree, threw it at the entrance of the city gate, and raised over it a great pile of stones.

The kings gathered themselves together as one to fight against Joshua and against Israel.

The inhabitants of Gibeon acted with cunning when they heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai.

They took worn-out sacks, worn-out and mended wine skins, wore worn-out and patched sandals and garments, and took dry, crumbly bread.

The Gibeonites told Joshua and the men of Israel that they had come from a distant land.

The Gibeonites asked the men of Israel to make a covenant with them.

The Israelite men took some of their provisions but did not ask for the mouth (counsel) of Yahweh.

Joshua made peace with them and made a covenant with them to let them live, and the leaders of the congregation swore to them.

The Israelites learned that the Gibeonites were their neighbors and lived among them.

The leaders said they could not touch the Gibeonites because they had sworn to them by Yahweh, the God of Israel.

The Gibeonites said they deceived the Israelites because it was declared to them that Yahweh had commanded Moses to give Israel all the land and destroy its inhabitants, and they were very afraid for their lives.

Joshua delivered them from the hand of the sons of Israel so they did not kill them, but he made them cutters of wood and drawers of water for the congregation and for the altar of Yahweh.

They feared greatly because Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities, larger than Ai, and all its men were warriors.

He asked them to come up to him and help him so they could strike Gibeon, because it had made peace with Joshua and Israel.

The five Amorite kings and all their camps gathered and went up; they camped against Gibeon and fought against it.

The men of Gibeon sent to Joshua, asking him not to withdraw his hand from them, but to come up quickly, save them, and help them, because all the Amorite kings from the hill country had gathered against them.

Yahweh told Joshua not to be afraid of them, because he had given them into Joshua’s hand, and not a man from them would stand before him.

As they fled, Yahweh threw great stones from the heavens on them as far as Azekah, and they died; more died from the hailstones than the sons of Israel killed with the sword.

He said in the sight of Israel, “Sun, be still over Gibeon, and moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.”

The five kings fled and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah.

Joshua and the sons of Israel finished striking them with a very great slaughter until they were finished, and the survivors entered the fortified cities.

Joshua struck them, killed them, and hanged them on five trees until evening; then, at sunset, they were taken down, thrown into the cave where they had hidden, and great stones were placed over the cave’s mouth.

Joshua struck all the land and all their kings; he left no survivor but devoted every breathing thing, as Yahweh, the God of Israel, had commanded.

Joshua was able to capture all these kings and their land at one time because Yahweh, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.

When Jabin, king of Hazor, heard, he sent to Jobab king of Madon, to the king of Shimron, to the king of Achshaph, and to other northern kings.

All these kings met together and came and camped together at the waters of Merom to fight with Israel.

Yahweh told Joshua not to be afraid of them, for the next day he would give them all slain to Israel; Joshua was to hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire.

They struck every person in Hazor with the edge of the sword, devoting them; not any breathing thing remained, and Joshua burned Hazor with fire.

Joshua captured all the cities of these kings and all their kings, and he struck them with the edge of the sword, devoting them, just as Moses the servant of Yahweh had commanded.

Just as Yahweh had commanded Moses his servant, so Moses had commanded Joshua, and thus Joshua did; he did not turn aside a thing from all that Yahweh had commanded Moses.

There was not a city that made peace with the sons of Israel except the Hivites, the dwellers of Gibeon; they captured all of them in battle.

The sons of Israel struck Sihon king of the Amorites and Og king of Bashan and possessed their land on the east side of the Jordan.

Moses, the servant of Yahweh, and the sons of Israel had struck them; and Moses gave their land as a possession to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

Joshua and the sons of Israel struck the kings on the west side of the Jordan, and Joshua gave their land to the tribes of Israel as a possession according to their divisions.

All the kings on the west side of the Jordan were 31.

Yahweh told Joshua that he had aged and come into days, and very much land still remained to be possessed.

Yahweh said he himself would dispossess them from before the sons of Israel, and Joshua was to cause it to fall to Israel as an inheritance.

Joshua was to divide the land as an inheritance to the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

With the other half of Manasseh, the Reubenites and the Gadites had taken their inheritance that Moses gave them on the other side of the Jordan eastward.

Moses did not give an inheritance to the tribe of Levi.

Their inheritance was the burnt offerings of Yahweh, the God of Israel, just as he spoke to them.

The Jordan River and its border formed the border of the inheritance of the sons of Reuben.

The sons of Joseph became two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim; and they gave no portion to the Levites in the land except cities to dwell in and pasturelands.

Caleb was 40 years old when Moses, the servant of Yahweh, sent him from Kadesh Barnea to spy on the land.

Moses swore that the land on which Caleb’s foot had trodden would be an inheritance for Caleb and his sons forever, because he was full after Yahweh his God.

Caleb was 85 years old at that time.

Caleb asked Joshua to give him the hill country that Yahweh spoke of on that day, where the Anakites were with great fortified cities.

The lot for the tribe of Judah was to the border of Edom, from the wilderness of Zin southward from the end of the south.

The eastern border for the tribe of Judah was the Sea of Salt, up to the end of the Jordan River.

The western border for the clans of the sons of Judah was the Great Sea and its border.

When Achsah asked for springs of water, Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

The sons of Judah were not able to dispossess the Jebusites, the dwellers of Jerusalem, so the Jebusites have dwelled with the sons of Judah in Jerusalem to this day.

The sons of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim, inherited land.

The Ephraimites did not dispossess the Canaanite dwellers of Gezer, so the Canaanites have dwelled within Ephraim to this day but have become serving forced laborers.

Manasseh was the firstborn of Joseph, and a lot was given to him.

Machir was the firstborn of Manasseh and father of Gilead; because he was a man of war, Gilead and Bashan were given to him.

The daughters of Zelophehad approached them because their father had no sons, and Yahweh had commanded Moses to give them an inheritance among their father’s brothers.

They gave them an inheritance in the midst of the brothers of their father, according to the command of Yahweh.

When the sons of Israel became strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but they did not dispossess them.

The sons of Joseph asked Joshua why he had given them only one lot and one portion as an inheritance, when they were a numerous people whom Yahweh had blessed.

Joshua told them that if they were a numerous people, they should go up to the forest and clear land for themselves there in the land of the Perizzites and the Raphaites.

Seven tribes remained among the sons of Israel which had not yet divided their inheritance.

Joshua instructed them to provide three men from each tribe to arise and walk about in the land and write down a description of it.

They were to write down a description of the land according to their inheritance and then come back to Joshua.

Joshua threw a lot for them in Shiloh before Yahweh, and there Joshua divided the land to the sons of Israel according to their divisions.

The border of the lot for the tribe of Benjamin went out between the sons of Judah and between the sons of Joseph.

The second lot came out for Simeon, for the tribe of the sons of Simeon according to their clans.

The leaders of Israel had assigned more land to the tribe of Judah than it needed, so they gave part of that land to the tribe of Simeon.

It was taken from Judah’s portion because the division of the sons of Judah was too great for them, so the sons of Simeon inherited in the midst of their inheritance.

The third lot came up for the sons of Zebulun according to their clans.
